Ridiculous...or genius?
Forever on that study grind. #lifelong_learner #PGYinfinity
“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” - Hemingway
This is why I dislike NPCs who have no sense of their own internal compass, their own tastes, who have no sense of what they find beautiful and delightful, and who purchase expensive __ just for the name--just to turn themselves into a walking advertisement for some company. People are starving and you have such absence of financial perspective that you will spend 50,000$ on a purse? A purse that has the same functionality as a 5 cent bag from the grocery store? Everyone can spend their money as they choose. A call to goodness: money can do a lot of things and the trappings of power are not power. Knowledge is power. And a well-lived life is certainly not determined by material goods. #philippines #lifewelllived
There's a philosophical debate about what is "sustainable." The two dominant camps tend to advocate on behalf of either the hyper efficient dense city or bucolic rural self sufficiency. Personally,...

Early
If I go to school, I go in at a godforsaken hour so there is zero traffic. I park in the back of the school, near the gym-rec area, which is also home to a piano. These past two years, I had always assumed that the beautiful morning piano music was another student pre-/post-workout.
Today, as I parked my car, the shuffle Spotify playlist ended on Elle Goulding’s popular “Love Me Like You Do” and lo-and-behold what beautiful piano music was playing as I walked in! The same song! The simple piano-only version highlighted the beauty of the song, the balance of the chords and melody. I had never heard it that way. This prompted me to slow my normally swift (”crack hustle”) pace and peak over. These past two years, that skillful pianist of the Mozart, of the Top 40 rearrangements, was not a student but someone on the janitorial staff!
I complimented him on his playing and now I’m thinking about the arbitrariness of life. These past two years as I walked by without a glance, the thought sometimes flashed: “WHAT is this person doing here? They should take it on the road, get into producing, not be mired in study marathons for now and the next decade (wonderful existence though that may be)” Now that I know this talented individual is a janitor, it gives new dimension to that thought. Who hears this? Hopefully more people beyond my self-involved butt are able to hear this!
So today, here is to appreciating beauty, to fostering skills to create good and to paying attention to the individuals all around.
After 30 years, the male birth control shot finally has momentum in the US.
Pharma is not interested in developing male contraception as it is not a lucrative endeavor. However, it is certainly a worthy one with its potential to be a safer, cost-effective method of contraception. Children are miraculous and deserve to be raised with consideration into happy, healthy, knowledgeable adults.

“Later I would ask my friends if they’d noticed anything weird about how I was acting. ‘Oh yeah, we thought you were like on HARD drugs.’ That really shows you how good of friends you have: They think you’re on meth and they’re like ‘Don’t mention it, it’ll work itself out.’ “
On Houses but also On Bravery
On Houses Kahlil Gibran
Build of your imaginings a bower in the wilderness ere you build a house within the city walls.
For even as you have home-comings in your twilight, so has the wanderer in you, the ever distant and alone.
Your house is your larger body.
It grows in the sun and sleeps in the stillness of the night; and it is not dreamless. Does not your house dream? and dreaming, leave the city for grove or hill-top?
Would that I could gather your houses into my hand, and like a sower scatter them in forest and meadow.
Would the valleys were your streets, and the green paths your alleys, that you might seek one another through vineyards, and come with the fragrance of the earth in your garments.
But these things are not yet to be.
In their fear your forefathers gathered you too near together. And that fear shall endure a little longer. A little longer shall your city walls separate your hearths from your fields.
And tell me, people of OrphaIese, what have you in these houses? And what is it you guard with fastened doors?
Have you peace, the quiet urge that reveals your power?
Have you remembrances, the glimmering arches that span the summits of the mind?
Have you beauty, that leads the heart from things fashioned of wood and stone to the holy mountain?
Tell me, have you these in your houses?
Or have you only comfort, and the lust for comfort, that stealthy thing that enters the house a guest, and then becomes a host and then a master?
Ay, and it becomes a tamer, and with hook and scourge makes puppets of your larger desires.
Though its hands are silken, its heart is of iron.
It lulls you to sleep only to stand by your bed and jeer at the dignity of the flesh.
It makes mock of your sound senses, and lays them in thistledown like fragile vessels.
Verily the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul, and then walks grinning in the funeral.
But you, children of space, you restless in rest, you shall not be trapped nor tamed.
Your house shall be not an anchor but a mast.
It shall not be a glistening film that covers a wound, but an eyelid that guards the eye.
You shall not fold your wings that you may pass through doors, nor bend your heads that they strike not against a ceiling, nor fear to breathe lest walls should crack and fall down.
You shall not dwell in tombs made by the dead for the living.
And though of magnificence and splendour, your house shall not hold your secret nor shelter your longing.
For that which is boundless in you abides in the mansion of the sky, whose door is the morning mist, and whose windows are the songs and the silences of night.

In "A Single Man" Colin Firth's character (quoting Christopher Isherwood**) references special moments of clarity, beauty and feeling. Watching the first deer of this deer brigade emerge so slowly from the greenery started one of those moments for me this morning.
Last year, this time of year, when I probably did not have much clarity or resolve about my life and what I was doing with it, I actually hit a deer. It was my first car accident and it was pretty sad. So this morning holds significance both in a full-circle sense and in the context of recent events (really old people passing away). It was almost as if the world was giving me a small pat on the back: You're doing alright.

**Maybe don't read the book because it's sad. The movie is also a bit sad come to think of it.
The Girl With All the Gifts - Kindle edition by M. R. Carey. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading The Girl With All the Gifts.
Binge-read Mike Carey's (Lucifer, etc etc different comics) new book on Saturday. It is really good. August was a good month for books. Early August brought the release of the third and final book in the Magicians trilogy (humorous, more mature and more modern take on Harry-Potter would be an apt description), and then this book.
I stumbled on "The Girl with All the Gifts" because I've been waiting for the Lucifer series to come out on ebook. The volumes are gradually coming out but it's the last two that I haven't read yet! Sara bought all of them up to those last two, at which point she lost interest in the story and that was it! I read what Sara had and have basically been on a 4 or 5 year cliffhanger ever since!
That time when...P was appreciating the stylus I gave her, when I lurked demon-eyed in the background of a Galentine's Day shindig, when Jeff's excessive height forces him to tie his shoes in a particular way so as to spare his back, Dual Mother's Day when my cousin morphed into a young man not a baby--for which I grieve. There's something special in the round faces and chubby limbs of toddlers and small kids.
Ultra minimalism
In Asia, some places have the whole bathroom on one drain, as in, in the center of the bathroom is a drain and the whole floor subtly tilts toward that center. Last week's episode of "The Return of Superman" showed Song Ilkook cleaning off his triplets (!) easily with that bathroom style. (He just hosed them down and it was done.) This ultra minimalist sliding shower reminded me that someday, when I have a house or a condo or what-have-you, it is going to be ultra customized, tending towards minimalism, and now, perhaps, also include new-age showers like this.
Old stuff and new stuff, some same old, same old stuff
