Alexei: [drinking beer and laying on the couch] Watching Bob, everyone's on a mission.

Ava: I don't see Bob.

Alexei: [continuing drinking] I'm not doing a very good job.

Melina scooted a napkin across the counter because that looked like it could get messy, and while this wasn't her counter she did want to make sure that he didn't make a mess. Maybe that was a bit of her wanting to take care of others.

She paused at his words. Did he not know what Yelena had gone through? No that seemed odd. "Yes where they made us Widows." She said.

A shrug from her. "It is Russian we are not known for being sentimental." She said. "And sweets were not exactly high on the list of things when they are training us to be assassins." Melina continued. She had maybe tried to spoil Natasha and Yelena while they were together, but that was not the point.

He looked so cute holding the cookie out so she reached out for it all the same. She could see why Yelena liked him. There was something good and soft about him that she could understand why her girl would like.

"Maybe just a little." She said.

It was the years of being an assassin the watched his body language wondering why he tried to get smaller. She had made no moves that would indicate that was what she was looking for. "There are many things I would want to make up time for, and well a cookie is a start."

Bob shifted a little where he stood, like he wasn’t entirely sure what to do with his hands. He offered Melina a small, gentle smile—then glanced down at the floor for a second, then back up at her again, like eye contact was something he had to borrow in short bursts.

“Lena’s… she’s really trying,” he said softly. “She just—she misses her sister. A lot.” He paused, rubbing the back of his neck, his voice dipping like he’d almost said too much. “I, um… I know things. Sometimes. Don’t—don’t ask me how, it’s kind of… not a great explanation.”

He let out a quiet, awkward breath, like he’d sidestepped something big without fully understanding it himself, and then perked up just a little—like his brain had offered him a much safer topic.

“Maybe you could, uh… watch a movie with her?” he suggested, a hopeful note creeping in. “I can lend you my Shrek collection. I have it on DVD.” He nodded once, a little too earnestly. “It’s—um—it’s actually really good. Emotionally. Surprisingly.”

"Not really." She said. "When it is quite clear that Yelena is an assassin." While the Widows identities were a secret there were some perks to having the Ten Rings at her disposal even when she'd been kept in the dark. "No one would call being an assassin fun."

Just the slightest bit of a raised eyebrow at the mention of the Winter Soldier. There was something special about this man in front of her to be associated with all of them.

"You remind me of someone with how much you talk." Xialing said. It almost made her miss Katy honestly.

"Many things are complicated. I know that better then most." She said. "But some labels are not that complicated when they are what they are." A soft breath out from her. "Do you want something to drink?"

“They’re… they’re actually really trying, you know?” Bob said gently, like he didn’t want to upset anyone, arms opening in a kind of earnest, wobbly gesture. “Like, effort is happening. Growth-adjacent, even. So maybe let’s not—judge them? Too hard? Or at all, ideally.”

There was a soft clink.

Bob blinked.

He slowly looked down at his wrists as the handcuffs slipped apart and fell to the floor in sad little pieces.

“…Oh.”

His eyes widened, guilt hitting him all at once as he crouched down, hurriedly scooping up the broken bits like he could somehow undo it. “Sorry—sorry! I didn’t mean to— I’m still figuring out, uh… grip strength. And, like… everything strength, actually.”

He stood back up, clutching the pieces, then glanced over his shoulder at the guy who had kidnapped them, as if just remembering he was there.

“Oh. Hey. Hi.”

A beat.

Then, much more casually than the situation called for:

“Do you—um… do you have Mountain Dew?”

She walked quietly for a few moments, just trying to wrap her mind around what she had just experienced. Pepper shouldn’t have been so shocked - really. She had been introduced to the world of superheroes over a decade ago and had even been part of the action before. So why was she so nervous about it now? It wasn’t really fair to Bob either - he had just saved her life. Pepper was grateful, honestly. She just wondered how he had gotten his extraordinary powers.

Eventually, she turned to look at him. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to just go quiet,” she explained. “It’s silly too… I’ve been surrounded by the Avengers for years. Hell, my husband was Iron Man. So it’s not like I haven’t been in the presence of immense power before. I’m grateful you helped me, please don’t think I’m not.”

"Oh, no — please don't apologize," Bob said, and he meant it, and also he was a little relieved she'd said something because the quiet had been fine but he hadn't known what to do with it. "I go quiet a lot too. It's okay. Quiet is good." He nodded, like he was endorsing quiet as a concept.

Then she said Iron Man and Bob's brain did a small, polite stall.

"Your husband was —" he started, and stopped, and started again. "Iron Man." He said it back to her not as a question exactly, more like he was just checking the sentence was real. He looked straight ahead for a moment, at nothing in particular, and you could see him doing the math — the quiet, uncomfortable math of realizing the person walking next to him had existed in proximity to someone genuinely extraordinary, and that he was, by comparison, a guy who'd panicked his way through a coffee order twenty minutes ago. "That's — yeah. That's. Okay." He nodded slowly, like he was accepting a delivery. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to make it weird. I just — I'm very aware right now that the bar was extremely high and I am, ehm." He glanced at her sideways, soft and a little helpless. "I'm just a guy who's good at cleaning."

Pepper chuckled to herself when Bob had to do a double take when she mentioned Iron Man was her husband. Though, part of her was shocked that he didn’t seem to know, she was also relived because it meant the privacy that she and Tony tried to achieve in order to raise their daughter worked.

Though, when he talked down on himself again, Pepper shook her head. “I’m going to let you in on a little secret,” she said, looking at him. “My husband also struggled with some things. He constantly doubted himself, was always thinking of things he could do better. He made mistakes and he wasn’t perfect.” She explained to him. “So I know that you’re a guy who’s good at cleaning, but you’re also a guy that has extraordinary powers and can use them for good. You don’t have to be perfect everyday… and you definitely don’t need to compare yourself to Iron Man. You’re going to do just fine.”

Bob stared at her for a second, and then he looked down at his shoes, because what else was he supposed to do when someone was being this kind to him. "He doubted himself?" he asked, and his voice was quiet, like he was trying not to wake something up. "I mean — he was Tony Stark. He built a suit of armor in a cave. With a box of scraps." He shook his head, small and fast. "I am just... a guy." He didn't look up when he said it, like if he kept his eyes on the ground the words wouldn't weigh as much. He still hadn't told her about the Void. He still didn't know how you said that out loud without making the whole thing feel like a lie.

"I appreciate you saying all that," he said finally, and he didn't mean it the way people meant "thanks" when they were brushing something off. He meant it. "I just — I'm not sure I believe it yet." His shoulders pulled in a little, the way they did when he was trying to make himself smaller. "But I'll try. I can try to not compare myself to him. I can try to be the guy who's good at cleaning. Maybe that's enough." He looked at her then, just for a second, and his eyes were blue and tired and very honest. "I didn't know someone like that could doubt themselves too. I guess that makes me feel a little less broken. Sorry. I'm not good at accepting compliments or — or comfort. I'm working on it." He offered a small, crooked smile that was almost a real one. "I'm trying to get better."
