Hunter had spent all day sewing this shirt for Luz. First on his machine, and than when that broke, by hand. The cuts and bandages on his fingers shows proof of his hard dedication to making something he hopes she would love with all her heart. However like everyone out there who makes and creates things, self doubt sets in. Hunter looks at the shirt with hand sew patches and sewed picture of Azura the good witch on the front. It's not like any of those store shirts he seen Luz eyeing whenever they walk past by the shop in Gravesfield. It's not shinny and new. It's hand made and far from perfect. Hunter thinks negative thoughts, "she won't like it." Hunter hears a voice calling for him, " Hunter? Where are you?" Hunter panics, but doesn't have time to hide the shirt as he hears Luz come down the basment stairs. Than there she is. The shining sun. The light in darkness, Hunter thinks helplessly as he stares a the human that holds his heart. Luz smiles at him, "What are you doing down here? Gus send he kept hearing your cursing, mostlyin pain which has me worried." Hunter mumble, "It's nothing I'm fine." He unconsciously goes to hide the shirt behind, Luz notices the action, "What’s that?" Luz full of curiosity. Hunter sighs and decides to be brave, besides this is Luz. If anything she would never hurt his feelings. He hands the shirt to her, his big scarred hands touching her delicate but ink stained tanned hands. Luz grasps the shirt and holds open in front of her. Looking at it fully. She gasps softly in wonder as she stares at the good witch Azura. The handstitch stitching. The time and effort and well love it took to put into making this shirt. For her. Luz cuddles it close to her chest, "You made this for me?" Her eyes were wide and wet, no tears yet. Hunter babbling, "I-I did, I know it's not perfect b-but-." Hunters babbling is interrupted by Luz tacckle hugging him. Luckily Hunter is use to her pouncing by now, so they don't end up on the floor. Holding her up while she hugs him tight back, her legs dangling in his grip, feet not touching the ground. "Thank you Hunter! I love it!" Luz exclaims happily. Hunter's shock shines through at her words, "Y-you love it? Really?" "Yes i do." And Luz does something that hasHunter freezing still, as if he has been petrified into stone by Emperor Belos himself. Luz kisses him sweetly on his scarred cheek in thanks and hidden love. The kiss is warm and causes a flush to appear on Hunters skin. Luz giggles at his reaction, hops out of his hold and runs with the shirt up stairs, it flying like wings behind her. "I'll go try it on right away! Amity is going to be so jealous! Thank you again Hunter!" As Luz's voice fades away, Hubter in a daze touches his cheek, were he can still feel her touch. Softly he says, "Your welcome."
*takes place post kings tide and pre thanks to them. Warings under age drinking, depression and suicidal thoughts*
Hunter gasps awake in a cold sweat. Hunter has a bad feeling, like a warning. This bad feeling is probably why he woke up so late. He looks around the basement. Gus is asleep next to him on the couch. So is Flapjack by the sleeping bag. So why does he feel like something is wrong? He closes his eyes and thinks back to what he was dreaming. The dream is slipping fast from his mind. However the one thing he remembers for sure is sad hazel brown eyes in the middle of all that darkness. Familiar ones too. Hunter opens his eyes wide in a flash and whispers to himself, "Luz." He doesn't know why but he knows something is wrong with her. Getting up Hunter puts on his shoes and quietly goes up stairs, making sure to avoid creaks and groans on each step. Heading into the living room he stops as he hears a soft sound in the kitchen. The back door opening and closing in time with the wind. Hunter realizes quickly that Luz had left, leaving the backdoor slightly opened in her haste. He knows where she's going. He finds her sitting on the porch of the old house. Still in her pajamas but at least wearing her jacket. A jacket that saved his life. Her back to the front door. Her knees to her chest. All curved up in a ball. Trying to be tiny and hidden. In her hands is a bottle. One she brings to her mouth and drinks. The only noise other than the trees and the wind is her drinking from the glass bottle than setting it down next to her. She is silent, but she sees him. A deep dark sadness in her hazel owl eyes that has almost eaten all the light from her. Hunter swallows his dry throat." What are you doing?! Leaving in the middle of night, and what is that, your drinking?!" He speaks into the night. It echos into the silence of the forest. She still hasn't spoken. Just picks up the bottle again and takes another sip. The not talking is what scares him the most. Luz is a babbling song bird. She's never quite. Never this still. Frustrated but afraid for her he goes up the porch and sits next to her. She smell like alcohol. If he's right it must be Camilla's. He remembers seeing some of it in a glass cabinet, what Camilla describes to him as dominican alcohol rum. In facy bottles that Camila and Manny had saved from their trips to D.R. Luz finally speaks with a slight slur to her words, " I just, I wanted my thoughts to stop for once you know. To stop thinking." Theres a wetness in her voice as she slurs her words. She's been crying. "Thinking about how that door failed. Literally burned up in flames. How we're no closer to figuring anything out." Hunter stays silent as Luz continues, but he holds her hand not holding the bottle. She intertwines her fingers with his, grips back hard. Desperate. "How I can't seem to do anything right! You know. Since me existing is basically the reason estamos jodidos sin suerte." Luz laughs a self-deprecating laugh. Hunter winces(Luz never curses. Cursing in spanish, she must be really upset and really drunk). Hunter goes to take the bottle from her, "Ok I think you had enough." Luz gribs the bottle tight and pouts at him. She takes another drink. "You don't understand." Hunter sighs, "Of course I understand. The secrets, the guilt and the shame. Hating yourself down to your very bones. I fucking get it". Deciding to pull her in his lap and cuddle her close so she doesn't at least freeze to death, they can share body heat. She relaxes into him, but takes another sip of rum. Hunter in an understand voice that echos in the dark Gravesfield forest,"You don't think I can understand what your feelings? The not wanting to exist? That I can't relate? Because I do, you know I do. What we both saw in his mind, was traumatic for the both of us. Whether we like it or not Belos made us realize the worst of ourselves that night." He runs his fingers through her curls, getting a soft hum in approval. Tapping at the bottle he says serious "But this wont help. Believe me." Luz sighs but gives him the bottle. She fully hugs him and cries into his shoulder. He holds her, he will be her safe haven when no one else can be.
i’d say the love language they use the most is lots of physical contact, with a side of listening to each other infodump about their favorite things ofc

Hunter stares at the full length mirror in horrified fascination at his shirtless reflection. His new scars cover his whole chest. He would imagine if he took off his pants it would go down to his legs too. Ever since the gang has gotten to the rebellion base in the Boiling isles. Hunter has been terrfied of looking into a mirror or any reflected surfaces. Now in the privacy of the rebellion bathroom, he had no choice. He looked so different. And he didn't know what to think. Is this the face Luz saw when Belos attacked her? The last face Flapjack saw? Before he can spiral more into dark thoughts, as if on que, theres a knock on the bathroom door. "Hunter, it's me Luz. Can I please come in?" Hunter doesn't respond, but for the first time a tiny sad smile appears on his face. His answer is unlocking the door. Luz lets herself in right away and locks the door behind her. Wide worried hazel brown eyes stare at him. Ones that now mirrors his own. Without saying anything she just hugs him. In front of the mirror their hug is reflected back. Hunter slowly returns the embrace. Her warmth, her light is very much appreciated by him. Luz sighs, " Dumb question to ask considering everything," Luz babbles worried for him. Muttering some words in spanish she hugs him tight and continues, " Are you ok?" Hunter doesn't say anything. His silence should be enough. Luz frowns sadly up at him. " Yeah thats what I thought." Hunter continues to say nothing. He turns to the mirror again, Luz follows his gaze and stares too. They are both hit with how different they look from how they were in Latissta. So very different, feels like years ago now, when really it's only been months. Luz has her share of scars from Belos now too. The red mark on her eyebrow is hard to miss. Yet it suits her. Luz tries to smile at him. Its a tiny candle light smile, but no less beautiful for it's brightness that it brings. " I guess we both have changed a lot haven't we. I'm not just that "human" anymore." Hunter finally speaking, "Guess I'm not that bad but sad boy anymore. " Hunter leans his forehead angsts hers and feels tired. And angry. A slow simmering anger in his bones. Luz, sensing this runs her fingers through his new hair. She hums in comfort. The anger doesn't go away, not fully, but it's at bay now. In the safe haven in this tiny bathroom. With her he feels like things will be ok. Even though they're not.
“You really didn't have to be here with me, you know?”
“Well, I didn't want you to feel like you're alone.”
Luz Noceda stared at the makeshift gravestone that lay at her feet— Hunter standing next to her, holding her hand gently yet reassuringly with his gaze also set on the ground.
She smiled weakly. “Hola papi. I hope you're doing well. Sorry that we couldn't do this at our usual spot, hehe…”
Welcome to Day 4 because I couldn't think of anything for Day 3! Also a day late since deadlines are a thing and I hate work 😭
For this piece, I really wanted to do something with Hunter ‘meeting’ Luz's dad since honestly that was one of the cuter scenarios I could come up with in my head, and having him say how grateful he is to have met her is just the cherry on top.
It had only been three days since she and her friends had returned to the Demon Realm. And out of all the worst case scenarios that crossed her mind, she was at least glad that none of them came true, and that her loved ones were still safe and sound.
After crossing the portal, the group was met with a hollow shell of what the Boiling Isles used to be, an abandoned wasteland that paled in comparison to the true glory that could be seen once upon a time in Bonesborough. Yet despite the unsettling nature, everyone was happy to find the rebellion relatively quickly.
Families and friends reunited, and Luz's heart couldn't be fuller. Her only concern— and that of everyone else's— was King's disappearance along with The Collector. And even though Luz was prepared to confront the evil being head on and get her precious little brother back, Eda and the others were there to help her listen to reason, and come up with a plan first.
As such, the next few hours were mostly spent catching up, and brainstorming with ideas on what their course of action should be. There wasn't much the human could contribute to the conversation that wasn't being said already.
It was then that Camila mentioned how ‘Dia de Muertos’ was coming soon.
The Noceda family was heavily rooted in tradition— there was a reason why Luz and her mother honored her father's death every year— and despite The Day of the Dead being a Mexican Holiday, her family had taken the tradition of honoring their loved ones after passing away to heart, especially after Emanuel ‘Manny’ Noceda's death.
Thinking it would be a good way to separate herself from everything for a moment, Camila told her daughter that it might be ideal to celebrate, regardless of where they were.
And as such, the Nocedas began their preparations. They didn't ask for help, nor tell anyone what they were doing, since they wanted it to be something special and just for them. There was also the fact that the others were preoccupied with more pressing matters, and the humans would've hated to get in the way.
But of course, Hunter was too smart to not notice the brunette's sudden disappearances from meetings and hang outs with their friends. He commented on it, and it was impossible for Luz to hide it. Not like she wanted to anyway.
The older boy had read about the strange celebration his girlfriend spoke of— all through many books in the library when he was trying to learn everything he could about the Human Realm. Because of this, he was happy to know that at least he was somewhat prepared for what he was getting himself into, considering how he offered to join Luz in the strange human ritual.
Once her mother had finished speaking in front of the small graveyard, Luz told her that she wanted to have a moment alone with her father, to which the older woman agreed.
After being left alone, Hunter emerged from his hiding spot in the bushes and joined the girl as they both stood in comfortable silence.
Taking a deep breath, Luz let out a deep sigh as she felt the cool night air brushing her cheeks. “Alright. Here I go.”
Kneeling down, the girl stood face to face with the gravestone. It was a smooth rock that she and Camila had found near the Owl House, and despite trying their best to imprint her father's name on it, the surface was barely dented. Some dishes also lay on the ground— Manny's favorites, as best as Camila could replicate with ingredients from the Demon Realm. As it was all surrounded by small candles, it almost bought the illusion that this was her father's grave.
Luz smiled weakly. “Hola papi. I hope you're doing well. Sorry that we couldn't do this at our usual spot, hehe…”
Small tears began to form in the corner of her eyes, but Luz ignored them as she reached into her bag. “M-Mamá has been okay. Well, as okay as she could be with learning about the Demon Realm. You know, the one I told you about before? She got you some food, but I figured you might want something to keep yourself busy with, too.”
From the bag, the brunette pulled out one of the many Cosmic Frontier books she found in the basement of her home and placed it on the ground with the cover facing upwards. “Mom never told me you liked this series, but I'm glad I know now… Besides, my friends enjoy it too thanks to you! Guess you always were good with recommendations…”
It was only then that the human remembered she wasn't alone, and decided to look at her companion. Hunter tried to remain calm, but it was clear by his fidgeting that he didn't know what to do other than just stand there as moral support.
Luz could only smile at the boy's dedication. “And this is Hunter. My boyfriend.”
At his name being mentioned, the blonde's eyes widened as he stared with slight confusion. She didn't give him a chance to reply before continuing. “So many crazy things are going on right now, and I have no idea what's going to happen, and honestly… It scares me. But despite that, he's been with me all this time, and I know I can count on him whenever I need him.”
Wiping some tears with her sleeve, Luz continued. “You were right, papi. Encontré a mi príncipe azul… And I love him. Thank you for helping me find him and all my friends. I miss you, but I know you're always with me… Te quiero mucho.” And with that, the human stood up and merely smiled at the gravestone, letting the tears fall down her cheeks.
“Thanks for being here Hunter. It really helped me feel better…” Luz spoke softly as she started wiping the tears from her eyes. “We should probably head back before the others wonder where-”
“Not yet.”
Hunter's voice broke the silence that had settled in the air, being gentle yet firm. The human stared in confusion as her boyfriend walked in front of her and knelt down on one knee, as if he were addressing someone of authority.
Luz could only see Hunter's back, but was able to catch sight of something he took out of his right pocket: A piece of paper?
It wasn't until he brought it close to eye level that she recognized what it was. A plant glyph.
Using the magic the two had learned together, the boy pressed his palms together as he flattened the paper due to its crumbly state, and from his hands emerged something beautiful.
Sunflowers. A handful that was almost large enough to fill a bouquet.
Fixing the brightly yellow petals, Hunter coughed and proceeded to stare at the stone with the sunflowers in both hands. “H-Hello, Mr. Noceda. My name is Hunter…Um. I don't really know how to start but, I'm dating your daughter, j-just like she mentioned to you.”
“Hunter? What are you-?” Luz reached for the boy and placed her hand on his shoulder, but he ignored the gesture and kept going.
“I've done some things I'm not proud of. Things I… don't know if I'll ever be able to forgive myself for. But, your daughter taught me- Luz taught me that everyone deserves a second chance. She's the one that's kept me going all this time, even after I lost my purpose and didn't know who I was…” Hunter's grip on the flowers would get tighter as he spoke, keeping his hands busy with something else while pouring his heart out.
“It's not a stretch to say that Luz has saved me, sir. Multiple times, to be exact. The least I can do… is promise to you that I'll protect her, no matter what. That I will love her and never ever let her go. I wanted to be here tonight because I didn't want her to feel like she's alone. I too know what it's like to lose someone close to you…” The blonde gripped a handful of his shirt around the chest area, where his heart would be. The now forever home of his beloved best friend.
After a short pause, he must have realized he'd been rambling for a while, since a blush spread across his face and he began fidgeting with the sunflowers once again, this time into a sort of arrangement. “I-I know I'm supposed to be bringing something that you enjoy, but for this occasion I thought I could share these with you. Luz taught me about sunflowers and now they're my favorite, because they remind me of her. T-They also seem to represent loyalty, according to one of my friends. So it's another promise, that I will stay by Luz's side for as long as she'll have me.”
Gently placing the handful of flowers on top of the Cosmic Frontier book, the boy smiled as he bowed his head in respect. “Thank you. For letting me meet your daughter.”
Just like that, Hunter rose from the ground and stared at the gravestone while the candles finally burned out, indicating the departure of Manny Noceda from the world of the living. It was breathtaking— something he had never seen before.
It was only then that he came back to his senses, and another blush quickly spread all the way to his pointy ears. He began rubbing at the back of his neck sheepishly. “Sorry! Got carried away over there, hehe… So, yeah! We should probably go back to camp now- ah!”
Hunter backpedaled due to the force of Luz's body colliding against his own. Wrapping her arms around him, she buried her face in his chest as she tightened the grip as much as she could. “Yeah, we should. I love you too, by the way. And I'm never leaving you, either. Promise.”
With mouth agape, Hunter merely replied with a mumble as he returned the embrace. “Let's just go, you idiot.”
Luz giggled in reply. “After you, girasol.”
“S-Shut up!”
As the duo walked happily back to camp, they knew that no matter what, they would always be there for each other.
The battle would be tough, but if there was something Hunter knew better than anyone, it was that he wasn't alone. And he never would be, for as long as this girl chose to love him.
A flower for all my fellow Lunter appreciators who have accompanied us until this fourth day and especially for my dear @dreams-are-paper-thin, a flower for another flower Bv hahahah, please go check their profile to enjoy the fanfic and leave some kudos so that it doesn't wither
