Remenants of their laughter still etched onto her face, Cordelia nods in agreement, although she can’t actually concur. Her mind flutters back to the academy. The girls. She loves them, she really does. But even this - being sardined into a room with a hundred-odd other teachers while she listens to someone drawl on about things she already knows - is enough for her to feel far more at ease than she has in the past few months. Bonus points for the cute new companion.
“I’d like that,” Delia muses, taking Rachel up on her offer without a smidgen of hesitation. Her lips pull up into a welcoming smile, and she notes how candid Rachel is with her insecurity. She knows it’s not on purpose, but there’s something so wholesome about it, something that makes her want to fold the younger blonde into a protective embrace and never let go.
Lunch finally rolls around, and the conference room reignites with chatter, everyone making a bee-line for the exit. “Are you, uh, are you from around here? Do you know anywhere good we could go eat?” the headmistress asks, voice straining slightly above the hum of the crowd. She’d easily taken Rachel’s companionship, but now worriedly hoped that lunching together was part of the deal, too. They’re up now, advancing toward the door. The volume of people in the small room has their bodies pressed shoulder to shoulder, and it’s sad, but Cordelia could say it’s the closest to genuine physical contact she’s gotten in a long while. She’s almost disappointed when they finally make it out of the door and into the fresh air of the foyer.
A soft mixture of excitement and relief rush through Rachel at Delia’s reply, eager to be around someone who isn’t a teenager or a coworker, or just generally to be around someone who seems to want to be around her and be genuine about it. It’s not a feeling she’s familiar with, and apart of her is waiting for the other shoe to drop.
But it never does, at least not yet, and Rachel finds that sitting next to Cordelia makes time fly by. So much so, that she’s a little surprised when they’re all dismissed for lunch. She stands a little reluctantly, not quite ready to be out of Delia’s presence, and makes a move to join the crowd. “Oh, no I’m not from here. I--” She blushes slightly before she continues, a chuckle falling from her lips. “I was just going to go back to my hotel room and order a pizza, but if you’re uhm--” She pauses and allows someone to go around her so that she can continue to walk next to Cordelia. “If you’re offering your company for lunch, I’d much rather do that.”
Rachel thinks it might be sad how much she wants to be in Delia’s company, how disappointed she’ll be if Cordelia tells her she hadn’t meant the question that way-- that she didn’t want to have lunch with her, but she tries not to allow herself dwell on her insecurities for once, reminding herself that so far, everything about Delia seemed very genuine.
As they enter the foyer, Rachel lets out a quiet breath -- relieved to be out of the crowd -- before she gestures to a spot off to the side of the room so that she and Cordelia can talk without being in anyone’s way. “Maybe there’s somewhere within walking distance?” She offers, pulling her glasses from the top of her head and putting them on as she reaches into her back pocket for her cell phone to google it. “What were you in the mood for?” She asks, brows furrowing in concentration as she taps away at her phone.
bestsellingsurvivor:
Lana feels the old tinge of unease creep over her as she walks the halls of Franklin High, her discomfort with children weighing thick in her throat as she peers at the school day’s stragglers from the corners of her eyes. She had felt this way when visiting Wendy at the elementary school, like a wolf among sheep and shepherds, unwelcome and unwanted and dirty, afraid of breaking fragile minds with her own warped ‘perversion’—her mother’s word, an echo from the past lodged deep within the folds of her memory. These kids, half grown teenagers, are marginally less unnerving for her, but the feeling stays, thick as a root twisting through her guts.
It’s no small relief when she reaches the English teacher’s classroom, knuckles still white from their grip on her handbag as she raps sharply at the door, businesslike smile plastered over painted lips. She takes comfort in her own professional appearance, her confident demeanor, wielding it like a shield as nerves are swallowed smooth as sandpaper. She’s grateful that the woman is alone, her wards nowhere to be found.
“Lana Winters, with the Gazette,” she announces, closing the distance with a few brisk steps and offering a firm handshake. “It’s a pleasure. I’m sorry, do you mind if I shut the door?” Without waiting for an answer, she crosses to close it with a satisfying click, breathing the tension out through her nose as at last she is sealed off, the minors protected.
She turns and flashes that smile again, warm and winning, and appraises Rachel for the first time, surprised to find her so young and striking, but she’s quick to turn her attention back to the task at hand, fishing in her purse for pad and pen. “Have you ever been interviewed before, Rachel?”
Words don’t come right away, stuck somewhere in her throat at Ms. Winter’s question, but it appears the journalist doesn’t need a reply; because Rachel watches as she strides over and shuts the door before turning back around to smile at her. And for a brief moment, Rachel finds herself wishing she had that sort of confidence that the other woman seems to possess. Blue eyes study Lana’s professional demeanor and seemingly straight posture, and Rachel wonders if the inside is as calm as the outside.
She doesn’t have a chance to ponder the thought long, because Ms. Lana Winters is back in front of her, pen and pad poised at the ready and asking her a question. In a poor attempt to stall, Rachel lifts her hand to push her glasses up the bridge of her nose before she pushes a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. “I uh-- n--no, I’ve-- I’ve uhm-- never been inter--interviewed.” She stammers out, cheeks tinging a soft pink.
Eye shut for a moment as Rachel takes a quiet breath and releases a nervous chuckle. “I’m sorry, I’m-- I’m just a little nervous.” She says, finding Lana’s gaze once again. “I’m still not even sure why they’re having me do this.” Rachel shifts in her seat, resisting the urge to jiggle her leg. “I’m-- i’m just the English teacher. I mean-- I know I was there but---” She shakes her head slightly. “I’m sorry. I’m rambling. Please, ask me whatever you need to.”
More Than A Feeling - Boston
I could be sad about it, or I could take ten shots and pretend it never happened
important headcanons to consider:
can they use chopsticks - not that well.
what do they do when they can’t sleep - rehearse the next day’s lessons (or do the lesson planning itself), if she hasn’t already. Or drink a bottle of wine and read a good book.
what would they impulse buy at the grocery store - sugary cereal, or donuts.
what order do they wash things in the shower - shampoo, conditioner, body, face.
what’s their coffee order - 3 creams, 6 sugars.
what sort of apps would they have on their smartphone - she has a facebook that she rarely ever uses, Instagram, though she doesn’t post very many photos (save for the occasional one of her cat, Fitzgerald-- Fitz for short), the weather app. probably a planner app of some kind. candy crush lol.
how do they act around children - depends on the age. as a teacher, she has to at least be okay with kids, right? and like them. so, she’s not terrible with them, but maybe just a little awkward.
what would they watch on tv when they’re bored and nothing they really like is on - animal planet, probably, a documentary that she can zone out on. or any sort of cooking show.

“Your hair keeps falling into your eyes, do you know that? Here, lemme just—”
soft sentence starters // accepting
Rachel goes to push blonde hair from her face, but her movements halt as warm fingers move to do it for her, pushing golden strands behind her ears. Something about the light touch causes her heart to somersault and her cheeks to tinge a light pink. Blue eyes glance down as she clears her throat, before offering up a soft, shy smile. “Oh–I– Uhm–” She shakes her head lightly and lets out an awkward chuckle. “I mean, thank you.” Rachel finally says, lower lip getting caught between teeth for a brief moment.
“i don’t mind sharing the blankets with you.” [it's like you reblogged these memes just for ME]
soft sentence starters // accepting
Cheeks are flushed crimson and whether it’s from the alcohol, or the way Cordelia offers some of her blankets, Rachel isn’t sure, but she can feel the heat spread up to to the tips of her ears. Something shy and warm blooms within her, spreading out and wrapping around her like ivy and it has her digging her toes into the mattress of the hotel bed. It’s such a simple offer, one that shouldn’t elicit such a reaction out of her, but the way Delia smiles at her– the way her voice sounds; it makes Rachel’s insides feel as if they’ve all shifted and rearranged into all the wrong places.
Her natural instinct is to second guess, and overthink, but Rachel decides to let herself have this. To have this moment, no matter how simple it may be, it’s a moment where she’s genuinely happy. So she smiles this bashful thing and nods. “Yeah, okay.” She moves closer to Delia – not close enough to touch, but close enough that she can feel the heat from her body – and pulls the blanket over her legs before she settles down on her side to gaze up at the other. “You know, you’ve made this trip a whole lot better than I thought it would be.”

Time seems to stand still for Rachel, her own heart feeling as if it stops right in the middle of a beat at Cordelia’s words; but it only lasts a second and then her heart triples in speed, as if making up for it’s missed beats. Her palms suddenly get sweaty and her throat dry as she chances a look at her companion, watching the way the slight breeze picks up the ends of her hair.
Beautiful. The word echoes in her mind as she leans against the balcony of her hotel room, studying Delia’s features and trying to find the right words there in her high cheek bones and dark eyes. A melancholic feeling suddenly envelopes her as she realizes that tomorrow, they will be going their separate ways. Instead of dwelling on it though, Rachel offers this soft, shy thing of a smile and moves so that she can snake her arm into Delia’s and lean her head on the other’s shoulder. “Me, too.” She finally replies, gaze moving out over the balcony. “This is the best time I’ve had in a long time.”

When Adelaide had received a phone call from her son’s school, her first thought was something bad had happened to him, he was hurt or sick. But when she was told that she needed to go to the school to speak with a teacher about an incident at the after school club, her concern grew into confusion. Noah was a gentle boy, yes he had his struggle with his ADHD but they were working on that.
She’d arrived at the school promptly, finding her son waiting outside the classroom with a scowl and a cut lip, bruises on his arm and right eye. He’d stood as soon as he saw her and Adelaide had examined his face as gently as she could before hugging him close and kissing the top of his head, promising to get this sorted out as soon as possible. Seeing any of her children hurt, in any way, made her blood boil but she wouldn’t let it out until she knew the circumstances and the culprit.
Entering the classroom, Adelaide gave a polite smile and shook the teacher’s hand, vague recognition flickering in her gaze. She knew she had seen this woman when she’d picked up the kids after school but she couldn’t put a name to her, not until she introduced herself. “Please, call me Adelaide, Miss Wilder makes me feel old.” The brunette replied with a touch of humour, a small smile on her lips that was laced with concern.
“Yes, I think that would be a good idea, Miss Stevens. Can I ask how my son ended up with a cut lip and a black eye?”
A soft smile curves Rachel’s lips at the other’s words, relief flooding through her at their introduction, because so far, Miss Wilder -- Adelaide -- seemed very nice and understanding. Of course, at the other woman’s question, Rachel grows nervous again. She settles back into her chair, hands folding on top of the desk to keep them from fidgeting. “First of all, Miss-- I mean Adelaide,” She starts, a small apologetic smile on her face. “I’d like to apologize profusely for this incident. It all just happened very quickly.”
She clears her throat and takes a quiet breath. “There was a... slight altercation between your son and another boy.” Rachel begins, a slight frown marring her features as she goes over the events. “I was tending to another child when I heard yelling, and after I realized what was happening, I pulled the two of them apart. Your son says that the other boy was picking on his sister, and that he started it. The other boy refuses to speak, but he’s waiting in Principal Alvarez’s office.”
“Seeing as how your son hasn’t ever caused any trouble, and this isn’t the other boy’s first time getting into trouble, we’ve decided that Noah won’t be taking any sort of blame, here. And the boy will be properly punished.” Rachel finishes, offering another apologetic smile. “I really do apologize that this happened under my watch.”
mrbisected:
every time he comes back to his old neighbourhood, kenny finds that he ends up hating himself more than ever. it leaves him feeling like an absolute fool, chasing a place that he’ll never be able to actually come back to, where he no longer fits in - has to hide. he only lets himself wander around at night, when he’s sure everyone he must avoid for their sake is gone, trying to refresh his memory. while he tries to enjoy looking back on the old times, the images in his mind make him feel empty.
the park is safe, though. he’s sure of it. sure, he’s come here countless times ever since his family moved to this neighbourhood when he was a child… but he doesn’t particularly have any major connection to the place - not like some of the places back in the middle of town. still, as if to protect himself, he stays by the edges, lighting a cigarette, trying to figure out what he’ll do next. he certainly has to move on soon - but he has no idea where.
he’s pulled out of his thoughts by the sound of something that in this town, is terrifying to him. his own name. the voice is odd to him. it’s no one he thinks was close to him, no one that is now dangerous. but still… he knows them, and obviously, she knows him. he’s slow to look at her properly, only doing it because he doesn’t have it in him to be rude, or lie, say she’s gotten it wrong.
cigarette is discarded, simply to buy him time, but the time runs out in the end. he tries to smile at her, hoping it isn’t obvious how he’s studying her. there is a memory there, he knows there is, hoping that it’ll come out the more he speaks - when he finally speaks. he cannot be quiet forever, and he knows this.
“oh - yeah… it - it’s me,” he tries to smile again, it a little shaky as he steps closer to her. hands are buried in the pockets of his jacket, eyes widening for a moment as something comes back to him. he never expected to see her again - it isn’t her fault, she never did anything… he just doesn’t think about most people from high school, save for of course heather and ryan. “it’s rachel, right? rachel stevens?”
Rachel doesn’t move from her spot, pulls her jacket that much tighter around her as she stares at Kenny with uncertainty in her gaze. Something-- something isn’t right, her brain tells her. “Uh-- I mean-- yeah. Yeah, it’s Rachel.” She rasps quietly, having realized that she’d probably been quiet for longer than what was probably appropriate.
The silence that suddenly falls on them makes Rachel feel like she’s suffocating. She clears her throat awkwardly and glances down. “Haven’t seen you since high school.” She finally says, trying and failing to get rid of the awkward, unsettled feeling that she feels every time she looks at him. “I uhm...” She trails off, unsure if she should say anything. It slips past her filter anyway, not that she’s ever had much of one. “I heard you went missing...”
The moment the words leave her lips, she wishes she could take them back, because the unsettled feeling suddenly tightens its’ hold on her. She reaches into her jacket pocket and uncaps the flask to take a sip, if only to distract herself. “Sorry,” She says quickly, after swallowing the burning liquid and letting it ground her a little. “That’s inappropriate. I uh-- I’m a little drunk, so I sometimes can’t stop my mouth from voicing my thoughts.”
Despite her initial feelings of uncertainty and wrongness, Rachel holds out her flask to him, offering up a drink. She can see some of that uncertainty and something gloomy reflecting back at her from Kenny’s gaze and well-- misery loves company. “Bad night?”
