What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

I do wonder how people manage to read 300 books in a year... like with jobs and chores and social life going on????

As someone who read over 200 books last year, I'll quickly chime in - though of course I can't speak for everyone.

For me, there are a number of factors. And yes, reading speed is one of them, but it's not always a good thing; I'm sure I miss things without meaning to.

I do most of my reading at work (an office job), though of course I read less when things are busy. I don't read much in my freetime, or on the weekends, when I'm busy being an auntie to 3 infants and a toddler.

The autism/ADHD is a major factor. It's what draws me to reading challenges that require planning and gamify my reading. It's why I have 10+ books going at any one time, but take an average of 2-3 weeks to finish any of them.

I should mention, I read mostly e-books, with some physical books mixed in. I listened to one single audiobook last year, and it took ages to get through. Lots of respect to audiobook fans, but they don't work for me.

Anyway, it's complicated, and this is just my experience, but hopefully the insight is helpful.
