he’s shifting from side to side nervously, the bright stage lights and the bodies crowded around him just a tad bit stifling. the mcs, however, look entirely unfazed—happy, even. with all the people watching from home and a large enough audience that could be found amongst themselves, changmin wonders how they manage to look so cool.
he had heard from sangyeon about the elder’s hosting gig, but he hadn’t considered how nervewracking it could be it until now. it’s not his first time at an award show—pretty u had only been a few months ago, and the overwhelming feeling of the stage was impossible to erase from changmin’s mind, no matter how many long practices and nervous recording sessions he had to go through—but he’s more antsy than he had been in the past.
it’d be a lie if he hadn’t considered the fact that lineup changes could have a negative impact on convex’s performance. perhaps pretty u came at too sudden of a time to for people to register. even if they did, he couldn’t shake the worry that the calm was temporary, unconsciously keeping an eye out for netizen posts, especially potential criticism.
but he never considered that joining could have positive implications.
he jumps in surprise when the camera zones in on his group when the top three are announced, a grin lighting up his face as he grabs onto a member’s shoulder affectionately, as if saying hey, look! it’s us!
the numbers that tally underneath the videos are higher than he could have ever imagined. he’s both amazed and touched at the support, but the fact that their name is the one that’s called as number one fills him with a happy fuzziness that overwhelms his system.
hugging his members and trying not to jump around too much, the scene around them turns into mostly a blur as he bows back to the groups that bow and congratulate him, his ears glowing red and eyes burning. he’s trying hard not to cry on public television as they do the encore, and he’s so flustered that his voice shakes a little during his lines, and he’s smiling so hard that his cheeks hurt.
as they say their final goodbyes and leave the stage, he continues to wave and bow at the audience until he’s no longer visible on the stage.
the feeling is absolutely exhilirating, and he hopes that he’ll be able to cherish this memory for a long time.
she hands him the flyer upon his request, noticing how excited he seems and how his ears are tinted red. she finds it endearing how he reacts to all of this. especially because she practically wants to react the same.
“ah! i know! i know. i’m the same! i turn nineteen in december,” she reveals with a shy smile and excited nods. “i’m mina. kang mina. i signed just this month and it’s really an honor to meet you, changmin-sunbaenim.” she bows her head once more to show her appreciation.
did she ignore him saying she could call him changmin or minnie? yes. but that’s because there could possibly be a manager walking around somewhere…. but also, he is her senior. so it’s out of respect!
the hint of starstruck that colors the the girl’s bright eyes doesn’t go unnoticed by changmin, perhaps because he himself has been in her shoes quite a few times now. from accidentally running into an idol in his first month of training to seeing one of his friends debut, changmin knows what it feels like to be in the presence of someone who shone so brilliantly in his eyes that he found himself a little self-conscious. the thought that he might be that someone to another person is flustering, though, and it manifests in the way his cheeks remain just the slightest bit red after the initial shock of their encounter wore off.
“thank you!” taking the flyer gingerly, changmin folds it into a few lopsided squares ( although a bit uneven, the attempt was earnest ), and tucks it safely into the pocket of his sweatpants.
“mina! happy to meet you.” as if proving his statement, changmin grins broadly, his eyes curling up into cheerful half moons. admittedly, he’s a little down at the fact that she seems to have chosen to call him by his full name ( not that it was a bad one! — but even his mom calls him minnie... although, maybe it was because she was his mom ), but it’s okay. it’s understandable why she would want to err on the side of caution, especially since she was now training under sphere... but he supposes it wouldn’t hurt to try, anyways.
“you don’t have to address me so formally, by the way — y’know, since we’ll be same-aged friends and all!” with a pause, he finds himself subconsciously thinking back to his older sister’s words of advice.
‘if you’re too friendly, people from the outside might misunderstand...’
although there’s no break in his expression that would indicate any troubling thoughts, changmin finds himself adding hesitantly, “if you’re worried about someone overhearing and misunderstanding, i understand, though. no worries!”
‘...and then others might get in trouble, too.’
despite the lingering thought, he resolves not to let it obstruct their potential friendship. senior in the business or not, he’d never turn down the prospect of making a friendly acquaintence.
( besides, unlike the other convex members, he wasn’t particularly extraordinary. he’s still the same kid who loved dancing more than anything else in the world, and the desire he holds in his eyes for the spotlight reflects back in hers just as strongly. )
08 11 20 - MV FILMING IN THE DESERT :: DON’T WANNA CRY BY CONVEX
“it’s so hot...”
even though he’s been under direct sunlight for a few minutes now, changmin finds that his eyes have only opened just a few millimeters bigger from their initial squint. it’s difficult to ascertain the exact details of the filming set because of how bright it is around him, and he’s half wishing he had actually bought those i-heart-la sunglasses at one of those merchandise shops in the airport when they had first landed.
( he’ll do it on the way back for sure. )
he’s used to heat, from dancing outside in the sun to dancing in studios with broken ac during the summer, but the scenery around him evokes a strange feeling of recognition that he can’t place.
he’s been to los angeles once.
considering that he’s almost nineteen now, his middle school days seemed like a distant haze, another life where he did not perform on a stage as an idol, but as a dancer. he remembers little bits and pieces: pressing his knees too hard into the seat in front of him on the bus, causing his teammate to sit up and complain; blistering hot weather that glued his hair to to the edges of his snapback as he toured around with friends; the cool relief that the auditorium provided as soon as he stepped in, and the way his skin burned and nerves fizzed when he stood onstage in costume for rehearsals, the rest of the dance team moving into formation around him.
what was the name of the venue again...?
he’s tossed back into reality when a member’s hand rests on his shoulder, and he realizes that he’s frowning.
“i’m okay, hyung!” laughing it off shyly, changmin wills himself to widen his eyes more, starting to look around him, connecting the faded green dots in the distance to sketch out a barren forest and drawing lines in the pale cracks in the cream-colored ground to create webbed patterns. for a moment, his mind flickers into wondering how something could bloom so prominently in a place so barren and unforgiving.
isn’t america so cool, minnie?
all of the new smells, sights, and sounds were overwhelming back then. but despite all these changes, dancing felt the same as always. it was comforting that his heart would remain the same, even if he travels around the world.
yeah! but, you know...
as he gets into position with the other members of convex, putting on a more serious expression in front of the cameras, changmin finds himself wondering about the path that led him here.
“well, looking the part is definitely much easier than going through it for real. wait wait wait, you’ve never confessed to anyone before? does that mean you’ve had people confessing to you? aigooo, mr. popular!” juyeon wraps an arm around changmin’s shoulders and shakes him from side to side with a bright laugh.
“atta-boy! that’s what i wanna hear!” although, juyeon’s a hypocrite because technically he’s dating someone while still being a convex member. “i also promise…” he looks around to make sure that those passing by are not within earshot. “not to let my love life affect my idol life either. i worked hard to become convex’s link and i won’t jeopardize myself or the other members.”
juyeon beams at his dongsaeng. “yeah, let’s ask them! i haven’t bowled in forever and i think they’d wanna play too. it could be fun. we could even make it a contest or something too and loser has to like… do something. maybe clean the dorm or buy food for the winners.”
flustered, changmin waves his arms around frantically in denial as sangyeon shakes him, his face starting to heat up. “hold on a second! i didn’t mean it that way, hyung!” sheepish, changmin tries to hide his face in his hands. “i’ve only been confessed to once or twice in school, but i couldn’t accept them because i was so busy with dancing. i didn’t really know those classmates too well, either! i felt bad.”
the more he rambles, the more he exposes himself, and now sangyeon knows that he’s never really confessed and has only been confessed to, which makes him look a lot more popular than he actually was. his face is colored a light shade of red when the other lets him go, and he presses his palms against his cheeks to try to will it to go away.
listening to sangyeon’s promise seriously, changmin nods enthusiastically. “i trust you, though! i think you’ll put any of us in danger on purpose or by being thoughtless.”
at the mention of a bowling contest, the dancer perks up, eyes wide and burning with the beginning inklings of a competitive passion. he had always been one for playing games and competing, whether it was through sports with friends or at ddr in the arcade near his high school. if he was to become the maknae on top, this was his golden opportunity!
“oh yeah, that sounds good! what if they have to clean the dorm and buy food for the winner?” suggesting it a bit slyly, changmin adopts a more mischievous expression. “unless you think any of the other hyungs might be really good at bowling, i think we have a good shot at winning, ehe.”
although sangyeon may have seen it once or twice from the younger considering how long they’ve known each other for, changmin’s sure the other members have yet to witness his more trickster side. what can he say, though--sometimes, you just have to hustle to win at life.
( okay, maybe he’s a little too excited at the prospect of a competition with his group members. )
after meeting three idols (two from sphere, too! how embarrassing) while handing out flyers, mina thought her luck was already wasted just from those three interactions. she’s sure that at this point, she’ll have more normal people to give her flyers too. at least, that’s what she hopes. she can’t really be too sure, with how her life has been going so far in the last few days.
she walks by people when she sees an oddly familiar face in the crowd. curious to see it up close, she takes it as an opportunity to approach them with a flyer. already having one in hand, she walks up to them and calls them out. “hi! excuse me! would you like a sphere flyer?” she runs to them and as soon as she’s face to face with the person, her jaw drops again. so much for thinking she wouldn’t run into someone she stans.
“oh my god! you’re micha! from convex!!” she gasps and bows her head. “hi! oh my god! sorry for asking to give you a flyer! you’re already in sphere!!” she bows her head. “i’m a huge fan! that’s how i recognized you. wow! i’m rambling a lot. sorry!” she wants to ask if she and her could be friends, since they were both born in the same year (according to sphere’s profile for him). but she’s already said too much! so instead she stands there looking at him in awe… like a loser.
no matter how many times he’s seen trainees outside giving out flyers, changmin never quite seems to lose the excitement that comes with seeing fresh faces and seeing their determination in getting their companies’ names out.
back in his trainee days and even as an idol, he goes out often enough to get handed a flyer from an unsuspecting trainee. rather than revealing his status, however, he finds it a bit more fun to see the surprise on their faces when they find him at seocho.
he’s heard from some of his trainee friends about the new casting ( especially for sphere ), so when a girl approaches him on the street with a flyer, changmin’s face brightens.
this time he’s surprised, however, when she recognizes him.
“hi, that’s me!” flustered, he finds himself bowing back at the stranger, laughing. listening to her explanation, he rubs the back of his neck shyly. he’s been recognized once or twice already when going outside, but it still catches him by surprise. it’s a bit obvious that he’s still quite happy at being recognized.
“it’s all right! it’s hard to tell people apart on the street, i had the same difficulty when i was giving out flyers in the past! don’t worry!” waving his hand dismissively, ears tinted red, changmin starts to bounce on his heels, smiling widely. “you can call me changmin -- or minnie! i’m eighteen going on nineteen this year. what’s your name? i can still take the flyer off your hands, by the way. i'm keeping a collection!”
“o-oh my— a-are you okay? I’m s-so sorry, I didn’t m-mean to scare y-you. trust me, I k-know how it f-feels.” maybe one day he’ll explain his fears to the new members, the experiences he’s lived through over the years because of it all, but for now, he likes the innocent smile changmin offers him — like seungcheol is just another friend amongst the group and not someone to pity, or someone who doesn’t seem strong enough to be a leader, albeit even just for one unit. “d-do you want m-me to take a l-look at it? is t-there a bump?” he asks, though he doesn’t come any closer yet as to not overstep any boundaries.
the delayed hunger is something seungcheol is also familiar with. sometimes, it feels like his body is so tired it doesn’t quite catch up to his hunger or thirst until hours later when he’s already indulging in sleep. perhaps his body forgets that it has anything to do besides practice and sleep, though the way he eats when he does sit down for a meal would persuade anyone otherwise. he had always considered his portions average before he signed to sphere, then slightly smaller to make sure he didn’t put on any weight they could punish him for, but now it feels like the opposite. sometimes they plate up for the entire group and seungcheol thinks momentarily before they start that he could eat all of it to himself.
“o-oh, no, no, don’t w-worry about th-that at all. I think with h-how tired we can g-get, m-most of us c-could s-sleep th-through an earthquake, so a little k-kitchen noise is n-nothing.” he insists, shaking his head with a warm, wide smile and an airy laugh. “I w-was going to p-politely decline so I’d k-know you’d be w-well fed h-having it a-all, but n-now you’ve s-said it’s ‘one h-hundred p-per cent a-authentic’, I d-don’t know if I can resist.” he chuckles once more, breathing in the heavenly smell. he misses his own mother’s cooking, too, though he wouldn’t ever admit out loud ( for fear that it’d get back to her somehow and he’d have his ear chewed off ) that changmin’s smells even better.
seungcheol’s concern makes changmin flustered just the slightest, and he rubs the back of his head a bit shyly despite his bright expression.
“oh, no! it’s okay! i’m okay! i’m tough to crack, haha. but, thank you for your concern.” not being one to forget his manners, changmin bows his head slightly with the thanks, rubbing at the back of his neck sheepishly. back at home, his mom would sometimes joke that he’s growing too fast, with how his full height used to be far, far below the overhanging cabinets in the kitchen just a few years ago. now, he stands at almost 180cm, still growing ( or he hopes he is ). sometimes, even he forgets this fact, and it’s led to a couple of accidental slip-ups here and there. nothing a band-aid won’t fix, though! he just hopes that no one ends up becoming an unfortunate victim of his clumsiness in the future.
“hm, yeah, now that you say it, the hyungs work really hard! a couple of weeks ago, i actually snuck out to the dance studio to practice and accidentally bumped into a lot of stuff on the way out, but thankfully didn’t wake anyone up. i should make something for the others too, sometime.” picking up the spatula for the rice, changmin almost taps the tip against his chin in thought before remembering that it would be touching the rice not too long from now. he decides to let it hover at a safe distance away from his skin before he turns to seungcheol with a tilt of his head. “what do you think?”
humming at the other’s answer, changmin starts to search for two plates in the cabinets, grabbing them and placing them on the counter.
“ah, no worries! back at home, i always wanted to cook for my sisters, but they moved out when i finally got around learning. truthfully, it was lonely eating midnight snacks alone.” pouting at the recollection, changmin’s brows are furrowed as he plops a healthy amount of fried rice on a plate with an almost humorous amount of concentration. a beat passes, and he turns to look at seungcheol with a softened expression, now beaming. “but you’re here, now! so i’m not alone anymore.”
although unsuspecting, he’s excited at the prospect of sharing a meal with seungcheol and getting to know him better. it’s always easier to bond over food ( good food, if he’s being a little more confident ), in his opinion. with that, he reaches into one of the drawers to grab a spoon, before holding out the other empty plate and the spatula to seungcheol to get his serving of food from the pan.
TIME: 45 min! ( 25 min SOLO / 20 min WITH TAEYONG, SEHUN, ROYAL, and a HARU cameo )
SONGS MENTIONED: heartz minhee ( @rkxminhee ) ’s vivid, per_se’s o sole mio ( @haknyeonrk )
ACTIVITIES: special skills ( tricking ), question & answer, cover dances
“woah... woah!”
startled when the app indicates that the stream has started, changmin’s hand immediately comes up to cover his face shyly as he sees the viewers come flooding in.
>> omg... micha...
>> maknae??
>> michacha!!
>> so cute <3
reading the comments carefully, changmin feels an overwhelming wave of relief when they appear welcoming and even happy to see him. it’s scary appearing without any of the other members to accompany him, but he wants to be brave around consta and to get more comfortable quickly.
although he’s obviously nervous, his eyes are bright and he lowers his hand from his face slowly as the messages continue to come. oh no, what should he do first? the script he had thought out the day before the live had fallen out the window the moment he realized he was live, really, actually, seriously live. out of nervousness, he finds himself doing convex’s team greeting alone, his voice taking on a softer quality than usual as he does a little bow in his sitting position, legs crossed.
“yes, it’s me! maknae michacha!” flustered at the nickname in the chat, changmin bows his head down momentarily before looking back up. continuing to read, he finds himself rambling a little bit more. “i hope everyone is doing okay... have you eaten yet today?“
humming at the answers in the chat, nodding his head in approval at the affirmatives, he finds himself pouting at a comment saying otherwise.
“not yet? that’s not good~ you have to take care of yourself!”
resting his hands on his hips, he puffs out his chest with a furrow of his brows. trying to wear a stern expression, he finds himself breaking into a more comfortable smile than the one he had at the beginning of the live.
“everyone, please make sure you get to eat enough today!”
with that, he goes back to reading, answering questions here and there.
“where am i? i’m in the dance studio right now...”
adjusting the camera to show the walls of the studio and his reflection in the mirror, he peeks out from behind the phone so that his face was still visible, waving at himself before returning it to its normal configuration.
“oh, where are the other hyungs? eum... they’re still in the dorms.. i think...” laughing sheepishly at his answer to the question, rubbing at the back of his neck, he adds, “if i’m being honest... i told the hyungs that i’d be doing a v-live today without really telling them where... i was too shy to ask some of them to come with me.”
on that note, changmin takes in a deep breath, before continuing.
“this is my first time being with consta alone... so i’m nervous and want to show a good image to you.”
the confession makes his ears burn, but he hopes that his sincerity comes through. the responses from fans are comforting, but he steels himself to not back down now. not after he’s rehearsed this so many times this morning.
“i also wanted to thank consta again in person for welcoming me and the other new hyungs so kindly. i was worried that i might not receive good reactions, but we ended up winning a lot and got a lot of love, so thank you! i’ll continue to work really hard!”
clasping his hands together and standing up, changmin and bows at a 90 degree angle for a few moments, before straightening with a beam. he can still feel the nerves pulsating through his body, but he can slowly feel his normal brightness returning. with that, he plops back on the hardwood floor and goes back to reading.
>> wah, turns out the maknae is a thoughtful kind of person after all lol
>> of course~ we love you, michacha~
pressing his hands against his cheeks, feeling them heat up, changmin chuckles flusteredly, before perking up.
“oh, right! i came here because i wanted to show consta something cool that i’ve been working on.”
with his initial hesitance melting away at the recollection and his heart freed after being able to say his thanks, changmin bounces back up into a standing position, bending over so that the camera could better capture his whole body.
“i have this... i was practicing something.”
visibly excited, changmin twists his torso to stretch quickly, straightening his arms before returning them to his sides.
“okay! are you ready?”
after taking in a deep breath, changmin does a smooth cartwheel, transitioning into a butterfly kick, ending on a macaco. he’s a little rusty after not practicing the tricking moves he had learned for a while--that’s why he had been practicing earlier--but guessing by the feeling of adrenaline pumping through his veins, he’s sure it looked pretty smooth. bouncing on the heels of his feet, changmin jumps around excitedly a few times before running back to the camera, crouching down to see the comments.
‘what do you think? cool, right?”
grinning when he sees the responses, changmin nods enthusiastically at one of the questions.
“yeah! one of my friends taught me in high school. i haven’t practiced in a while, but i can show more cool moves next time if you want~”
sitting back down, he tilts his head at one of the suggestions that come up.
“q&a time? hm... okay!” making an ‘OK’ sign with his hand, changmin hums. “what to call it... oh? michat?”
laughing at the pun on his name, changmin nods.
“michat it is, then! okay, everyone, michat time starts... now.” with that, he chuckles, his eyes curling into crescent moons and dimples peeking out. “ask me anything you want~”
pulling up some music on the phone to play in the background as the questions fly by, changmin bops his head to the songs while answering.
>> micha hi from usa!
reading the english comment, changmin’s eyes widen, and he waves at the camera, responding in english as well. “oh, america! hi!”
>> any tmi?
“hm... during pretty u promotions, i couldn’t keep my bedhead down when i woke up and it wouldn’t go away even though i put lots of water on it, so the stylists had to use more hairspray before i went onstage.”
embarrassed, he hides his face in his hands briefly, before laughing once more.
>> favorite convex dance?
“ahh, good question~ hm... aju nice? the feeling is really pah and like woosh, sort of like... when you drink something refreshing?”
gesticulating enthusiastically, as if drawing out the song with his words, changmin finishes the question with a firm nod, as if his rather unconventional explanation made perfect sense.
>> is there a song you’ve been listening to lately?
“oh? yes! per_se’s o sole mio--link hyung, haru hyung, and i are all close with junju hyung, since we all used to dance together. please give per_se love as well! fighting!”
>> please send per_se junju a video message ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
“okay! hyung, are you watching?” pointing at the camera with a playful raise of his brows, changmin sends a finger heart. “i love you~ you looked cool in the o sole mio mv--i’m a fan! please accept my support!”
with that, changmin mimics the ending pose of the o sole mio choreography, putting on a serious expression and trying to mimic the charisma of the per_se members while doing the dance.
>> favorite hyung? (english)
reading the question out loud, changmin cautiously looks around him in the studio with wide eyes, before looking back and putting a finger over his lips.
“hmm~ secret.”
>> micha.. heart please~
“ok! heart~”
with that, he gives two finger hearts, before forming a heart with his hands, then forming a bigger heart with his arms, the tips of his fingers touching his head.
at that very moment, he hears the studio door open, and jolts in surprise, letting out a sound of surprise and lowering his arms abruptly. snapping his head behind him to see who it was, his shoulders loosen at the realization that it was only haru.
“ahh, hyung, you scared me!”
the other only remains for a minute or two to say hi to the viewers and changmin before heading back out. he continues afterwards, continuing to answer questions until an especially familiar song comes up.
“oh, wait, everyone, i know this song!”
hopping up onto his feet at vivid by minhee, he starts to dance to the beginning part of the song, smiling brightly while trying to best encapsulate the sass that minhee injects in the performance. during the prechorus, he simply bops along to the song, not super familiar with the choreography for that part but waiting for the chorus. returning to the dance on “be okay,” he dances through the chorus, drawing a star with his finger before ending smoothly. cheering, he returns to his spot on the ground.
“vivid is a trendy song nowadays everyone, please give it a listen!”
humming, he responds to another question. “girl group dances? yes, i know them! i’ll prepare more next time if consta is curious~ it’s a promise!”
with that, he spends a few more minutes answering questions alone before taeyong, royal, and sehun pop into the studio, slowly filling the lonely space surrounding him from before and bringing life to the v-live.
woohyun tries his best not to think about zhengting’s departure, so he throws himself into practicing. there’s a lot to do, with the addition of the b-sides as well as working on their new title. don’t wanna cry has grown on him as a song, but the dance still has portions he stumbles over his feet with. so he does a bit more extra practice on it– at least to fine tune, so he can be prepared when their comeback approaches. and on top of that, they have to learn unit black’s call me baby. while familiar with the song from being under kt before his transferred to sphere– it’s dance is a little difficult for him to keep up with.
“hey, changminnie.” he calls out to the younger, smiling at his roommate brightly. he plops down next to him during one of their breaks. he braces himself on his hands, leaning back on them as he stretches out his limbs with a groan. “can i practice with you?” he asks, tilting his head at the other. “i’m struggling a little bit with call me baby…can i get some pointers?” he’s a bit sheepish as he asks, rubbing the back of his neck.
( he's trying his best not to worry about zhengting, to not think too much on it, but it seems that doing so has unearthed a different rabbit hole instead. )
alone in his head, it's easy to think that the older members are omnipotent and unfazed by the limelight regardless of their situation; even if that niggling voice of common sense nudges him whenever his imagination gets carried away, he wonders if he might crumble under the weight of such a famous song. trying to remember the excitement that had hit him when their stage was first announced but failing to chase away the nerves, he finds himself jumping around instead, shaking his hands and trying to rid himself of that strange, jittery feeling.
it's a momentary deep dive, however; as quickly as the anxiety appears, it's replaced by a sense of anticipation. changmin blooms back to life after a couple gulps of water during their break, visibly pleased to see woohyun when the other calls out to him.
( right, he has all the other members, after all - there's nothing to worry about! he's sure zhengting is doing well... he'll call him later, too! )
"hi hyung!" although sweaty, his face lights up and he scoots closer to woohyun. "of course! it was getting lonely doing my part over and over again..."
"let's do it - i can show you!" he makes a motion to get up before realizing that they had a few minutes of break left, and settles back on the floor sheepishly. "well! it was kind of tricky for me, too, back when i learned it... i was with the other busking hyungs and they already knew it, so i had to practice really hard to catch up."
thinking wistfully of his busking days, changmin uncrosses his legs and stretches them out on the floor, mirroring woohyun's position. truthfully, he didn't expect this outcome back then, but he's more than happy to be able to perform call me baby once more.
"which parts do you have the most trouble with, though? i'll try my best to give some tips, but hyung is already a really good dancer, so i'm sure you'll get super good by the time we’re done!"
consta, i missed you!!!!! ㅠㅠ i hope you all are resting well and are reading this in the morning ㅠㅠ 💚
this is the eighteen-year-old maknae ji changminnie, micha! can i tell you a secret?
it’s hard to sleep since there are so many thoughts running around in my head... the same thing happened the night before my teaser was released - i couldn’t sleep a wink and ended up sitting awake with the *plant hyungs until we had to get ready for practice. but you all were there when the video was posted, and i received a lot of love even though i joined later, so i’m really grateful. 😊
now, the night before we go onstage, i have a lot more strength than before because our consta is with us, but i still worry that i might not live up to everyone’s expectations. but that means i just have to work harder and believe harder in your love, right?
truthfully, being able to confide in you all has made me feel a lot calmer. i think i can do well as long as we have consta. i know i’m still lacking, so i will work doubly... no, triply... no, quadruply... as hard until i become someone consta can be proud of!
until now, this has been convex’s maknae and lead dancer, micha. thank you for your support and for loving me! please stay healthy and eat well~ 💚💚💚💚💚

07 24 20 - SPECIAL STAGE :: CALL ME BABY BY UNIT BLACK
cr. zhaolusi
the moment the song that they would be performing for the special summer stage at music bank was announced, changmin’s face lit up bright enough to flood the room with sunshine.
at this point, there were a few quirks belonging to ji changmin that convex’s instructors were accustomed to: first, that he would always greet the teachers in a unaffected and ( sometimes startlingly depending on what hour of day it was ) cheery manner; second, that he was always enthusiastic about whatever schedule was introduced to them for the month; and third, that he always, always looked inexplicably joyful whenever he performed onstage.
he’s even heard their performance coach joke once that they worried he’d be unable to dance onstage without smiling so freely, which was troubling considering that their upcoming title song was about holding in tears caused by heartbreak. in changmin’s defense, he’s rather eager to show the skills he’s been preparing for quite some time now, and finally being given a place where he could do so made his hunger for the stage more apparent than ever.
there were some things, however, that he didn’t wear on his sleeve—rather important things, at that. fortunately, getting to perform call me baby would reveal these sides of convex’s micha that he hasn’t been able to show so far.
this street is completely crazy
strangers in between people
every moment that we’re together like
boom boom boom boom boom
pretending to flip the stage’s camera right side up, changmin starts to stand while pushing his hair back with a dangerous smirk, dimples appearing to complement the cocky expression he’s wearing. it’s a clear whiplash from the boyish, cute image he had established with the pretty u stages and his prior appearances, but he appears at ease and continues to keep his gaze intense and charismatic, pointing at the audience twice with a bite of his lips.
following the moves and singing to kai yonghyun’s part smoothly, he finishes his brief solo and backs up on each “boom” while adjusting his red suitcoat, winking at the audience before assimilating himself into the group choreography as taeyong began to sing.
truthfully, after receiving his lines, he was both elated and humbled to learn that he had been chosen for the beginning and for one of the choruses. as a huge unit black fan, he knew most of the call me baby choreography by heart, but had never dared to touch younghyun’s part. as usual, however, his excitement overwhelmed his shock, and he was soon practicing with a renewed fervor for the stage, checking his expressions in the mirror closely and monitoring any video recordings of practices to polish his moves.
there are many who shine
but look at what’s real among them
call me baby, call me baby (oh)
call me baby, call me baby
walking forward to his spot for the first chorus, changmin does the iconic point dance of call me baby, swiping his arms and punching at the air, maintaining the dimpled smirk on his face and the playful narrow of his eyes. in a state of complete focus, he feels the music, playing the role of the casanova that the song drew out so clearly.
as his lines finish, he sings along with the chorus, moving out of the center spot and continuing to dance. the feeling of performing the song live was unlike any other; no busking experience, no youtube cover of the song would ever compare to the sheer adrenaline of performing on tv. the cheers fuel his every move, the song breathing life into him.
changmin finishes the song with his arms folded in front of him, one hand making a phone gesture against his ear and his usual friendly, bright grin returning to his face.
here, where the lights shine brightest, and where the voices of the fans are loudest.
changmin hopes he can stay with convex for a long, long time.
yes indeed, ‘tis me! for all the new people who i’ve missed over this very long period of hiatus / semi-hiatus due to being unceremoniously locked out of minnie’s account by tumblr... welcome & i hope you’re settling in well!! i play changminnie aka micha here, and i also play @rkxbin aka changbin! i’m re-introducing myself because i feel like it’s been that long ASKDNDFNKD but in the past few hours i have been cleaning up & updating both of my muses’ themes, fixing tags, and also making a game plan for plotting so i can hopefully stop flaking ><
but yes! rambling aside, this is a plot call so please drop a LIKE if you want to plot for either binnie or minnie ( if i haven’t responded to your dms from before, you can still LIKE for me to come back and continue ; v ; thank you for your patience )!!
i have some relevant plots underneath the cut for those of you who might be curious! i hope you’re all having a lovely day ♡
CHANGMIN / MICHA
a confidant / ride or die / best best friend!! minnie was usually so busy in hs that he didn’t get much time to spend with friends, so having someone to talk to as his best friend right now would be very nice!! as an ooc note you should probably expect either surprise texts or notices if your muse fills this role u n u (he’s an ‘01 liner btw!)
idol-related people...? tldr maybe someone who’s a fan of him or at least recognizes him either as a convex member or just likes his dancing! or, on the other hand, you can totally pump up the angst and have it be someone who’s not a fan of him joining the group late and tells him so to his face
old dance connections! this person could have competed against changmin when they were younger and he was still with SERENDIPITY, or could even have been in the same dance company as him! this kind of goes hand in hand with the childhood friend role, so something like that would be cool - they’re also the person he used to hit up whenever he did dance covers on ig before becoming an idol!!
late 2am convenience store buddy! as the title suggests... he tends to show up at the convenience store near the convex dorms at weird times of night for sometimes weird purposes like buying plant seeds or something while also getting some ramen so! maybe someone who he runs into often and ends up having late night chats with
SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THE MINI GARDEN STRUGGLE aka he’s trying to raise a little succulent plant garden in the dorms ( see HERE for reference, each one is named after a convex member ) but it’s Hard when you’re trying to be an idol at the same time and he cried when link almost died ( not actual link, plant link ) please listen to him stress out about his plant children and/or help him out
minnie is the surrogate dad of a cat called miu, who was originally a stray before he smuggled it home once as a kid although he had to give her up later since one of his sisters is allergic to cats :( he still visits her often with her new owner and sometimes gets to take her outside but!! he loses track of her one day and you come in to save him by finding miu he is vv grateful!
CHANGBIN
listen... a best friend is also needed asjdnjdf bin is a bit awkward! he tends to have a weird schedule and is busy trying to balance personal life/college life/trainee life so he has a hard time getting super close to people but he’s nice, promise - ideally this is someone who’d try to get him out of his comfort zone and want to bring him out to places, he might be quiet but he’ll appreciate it lots!! again with the random texts, this will apply here too! ( bin is a ‘99 liner! )
for an only child, he’s actually a really caring guy so someone he can baby is always an option!!
back in high school, someone told him that the best excuse to get out of any awkward situations is to pretend your s/o is calling you... your muse is the “s/o” in this sentence ( aka fake girlfriend role? yes it is ) - up until he was a college soph, he had your muse pretend to be his gf so he could get out of certain social functions or just awkward situations overall... this could be romantic or not! just some fun times, your muse also now has a good idea of his schedule and his lifestyle as a whole bc of this, and he usually buys your muse a coffee or something once in a while in return ( or your muse maybe has him pretend to be their bf for the same reason )
your muse makes fun of him for being a literal soundcloud rapper, he has nothing to say in response except for that he’s an underground rapper, not a soundcloud rapper ( he’s totally a soundcloud rapper )
fellow academically stressed student?? same cram school in hs? generally pressured into a different lifestyle by their parents and resisted and/or slightly resent their parents for that? Him Too, be his friend
your muse thinks he’s stuck up because he’s always so quiet and serious-looking and also really gruff when he speaks, you’ve also heard he’s a rich kid so he probably looks down upon everyone else but no he’s just really awkward and confused as to why you keep on giving him looks from across the room
he shudders at the mention of the mgas. “ugh… don’t remind me…” grumbling to himself, he switches back to his bright smile as to not make changmin think anything of it. “i hope after pretty u, we can do a darker concept then. i love fun and fresh but i wanna show off my charismatic expressions.”
“oh man, i’d be god-awful at the boyfriend concept. like…so super awkward.” sure, juyeon is technically someone’s boyfriend already so he has the practice in. it’s just different from actually being one to having to act and pretend like one. it’s cringe-y even. juyeon’s not good at forcing out sugary-sweet words either. “i think you’d fit it, though. but as your hyung, you’re not allowed to actually like or date anybody until you’re like…. thirty, okay!?” it’s mostly a joke but changmin really is juyeon’s son, his baby and he’ll be damned if he let his son go off into the dating world.
“hehe, sorry, link hyung!”
truthfully, changmin’s still a little iffy about the mgas--at least, the season he and juyeon had been on--but he heard somewhere that finding the silver linings of bad memories made them better! regardless, he lets the topic get steered elsewhere.
“eum! a darker concept would be fun! or a cool, chic one, like the one hak-hyung did!” his eyes sparkle at the mention of the other orion member. it seemed that him and juyeon truly thought alike--as expected, considering how long they had been friends for.
“me?! good at boyfriend concepts?” pointing at himself when he hears the other’s comment, changmin’s eyes widen, and he feels himself grow shy. “hyung... i don’t even think i’ve ever confessed to anyone before.”
he’s not sure if he should be honored or surprised--him, a mottae solo, being a boyfriend? the most experience changmin’s had was that time he played a brief section of one of his sisters’ otome games ( in which he got friendzoned! how does that even happen? it’s a dating sim! ). but, to be fair, juyeon’s so much cooler, so one of those seven o’ clock just right concepts could seem out of place for him. actually, changmin can’t quite remember the last time he’s had a crush, with school and training taking up most of his time. it’s obvious he’s thinking too much into it when he meets juyeon with a determined gaze, raising a fist as if making a promise.
“don’t worry, hyung! i won’t date! being convex’s micha is my full time job.”
the comicality of it all doesn’t really sink in until he realizes how loud he’s being, hearing a cameraman passing by them chuckle, causing his face to flare up.
“a-anyways... i was hoping we could actually bowl after recording finishes... do you think i’ll be able to convince the other hyungs to join in?”
pretty u has done wonderfully– and with every promotion, every schedule and everytime they perform he grows to love it more and more. it feels like starting new, starting fresh and everything is going to come together. he hopes that it does, that this is just the beginning for them.
woohyun also hopes that it’s a good beginning for the new members of their group. it stretches enough into curiosity, so he gathers up the motivation to ask changmin after he returns back from his idol radio schedule. when the younger steps into the room, woohyun peeks out from his bunk, his blanket knocking off of him as he shifts to sit up. “changmin-ah!” he greets, grinning wide. “welcome home~”
he likes being on radio shows. he finds that they’re relatively easy to get settled into, to be comfortable with. changmin seems like he’d do well, or at least that’s the vibe that woohyun gets from the younger. “how was it?” he asks, tilting his head. he moves to prop himself up on his elbow, cheek cushioned in his palm as he stretches out comfortably. “talk about anything fun?”
changmin’s still not super well-acquainted with this whole idol business ( ah, who was he kidding? he’s watched enough idol dramas when he was a trainee to know a good amount... or did he? ), but he does know enough to be grateful for being in a group with an established fanbase. he’s doubly as lucky to have supportive members, and he honestly thinks he’s experienced enough luck to have used up all of his reserves for the next ten years.
at the same time, he can’t seem to rid himself of the nerves he’d get whenever he goes to some kind of non-performance promotion. even though he had spent most of his trainee career honing his variety skills, he hadn’t quite expected to be using them so soon, and it makes him worried he might slip. of course, he’s good at covering it with more enthusiasm ( actually, anyone who knows him can tell he’s nervous if he’s being louder than usual ), and most of the time, he gets excited enough to forget his own anxiety, but the moment he leaves set, his legs feel like jelly.
he’s so absorbed in his thoughts that he almost jumps out of his skin when he spots woohyun suddenly appear from the bunk bed, letting out a yelp before covering his face and retreating back to the doorway in embarrassment.
“hi hyung!” he manages after a moment, still quite flustered at his own faintheartedness, shuffling over sheepishly until he can flop down on another member’s bed, shoving his face into the covers, ears a tad bit red. at the mention of idol radio, however, changmin’s head pops back up, his hair messier than before, and a bright grin adorns his face.
“aah, it was really fun! the hosts were really nice, and the other hyungs were there so it was comforting! my heart was racing the whole time, though, especially ‘cause there were only three of us, so i was afraid they might ask me a lot of questions that i wouldn’t know how to answer and that i’d forget to use my stage name.”
he almost doesn’t realize that he’s sitting up now, gesticulating enthusiastically, as if trying to recreate the idol radio setup ( although he’s sure woohyun is familiar with it ). it’s hard to help it--once enough time passes and the jelly-like feeling dissipates, the excitement starts to take over, and he’s suddenly falling over himself to recount anything that’s happened.
“they did ask how it was like--settling in and stuff--and i said that i was scared at first because i was new, but... because the hyungs are so nice, it ended up being really fun! or... easy? easier than expected!” he settles on the description with a determined look, before relaxing his posture once again, eyes softening. “but how was your day, hyung?”
juhee was nowhere new to the cafeteria scene at the sbs broadcast station. it had yummy sandwiches and an assortment of refreshing drinks that she had begun to yearn for all throughout april whenever they weren’t at sbs. so, like all the other times ( and unfortunately it seemed like today would be the last for a while since they were finally saying goodbye ( and perhaps good riddance ) to cushion ) she was standing in line waiting for her beloved sandwich.
it was the notorious inkigayo sandwich.
yes, the one with cabbage, potatoes, ketchup, mayo and strawberry jam. it was a ridiculous combination but it hit the weird salty-sweet tooth that juhee had developed over the month. it seemed, despite herself, she had become addicted to it.
she hadn’t ordered anything out of the norm ; the sandwich and a grape ramune. she would take a small break to eat, knowing the stylists, they would have a hernia if they saw her eating while in her performance outfit again. ( only way for them to not worry was for them to not know, right? ) which was why, when the lunch ladies finally call for her number, she’s all smiles, bowing and thanking them for the meal before settling down on one side of the hall to begin eating – first with a big bite of the sandwich.
weirdly enough, today the sandwich did seem crunchier than usual.
‘be careful, minnie. if you’re too friendly, people might misunderstand.’
eunbyul’s words ring heavier than changmin expected they would.
of course, anyone who watched variety shows would know about the whole taboo and the caution surrounding dating and opposite-sex friendships in the idol world—guys and girls can’t be friends, men are all wolves, something like that. ( although, in terms of threat level, changmin was more of a puppy—a small, all-too-excitable one. )
even though he knows enough to understand the cautious glances that some of the members of certain groups toss his way, he can’t stop his spirits from being dampened just the slightest. he wants to make friends, to hear all about the experiences of being an idol from a different lens. but he doesn’t want to stir up any unnecessary scandals or bring a bad image to the rest of the members by brashly approaching a group, especially a girl group. maybe in the future, he’d be able to break down the walls that others were carefully building up against him, but for now... he probably had to keep his distance, at least, until he made a name for himself.
perhaps that’s what led him to devise an all-too ridiculous plan to slip a thin piece of paper in between the top half of juhee’s sandwich and the rest of the filling, the strip sticking out ever so slightly in an inconspicuous manner. if he can’t come up to her physically without looking weird, he’ll at least get her to notice him! how fortunate that the two of them would have coinciding promotion periods.
( ‘hi noona! (≧▽≦) look to your right! - minnie’ )
he’s eating a sandwich of his own at a table not too far away, keeping one eye on juhee’s table and the other on his food when he realizes with a start that she’s taken a bite without looking at the paper wait a minute—
“oh no!”
well, if he didn’t want to attract attention, there are definitely people looking now after hearing changmin yell.
