—may 3rd, 2020. sbs inkigayo waiting room.

on the days where the group are to appear on music shows, meiqi finds that there’s a surplus amount of free time where they’re expected to do nothing but sit around and wait for their turns on the stage. it’s quite boring most of the time, so she goes around bothering her members or the staff. occasionally, she would leave the waiting room to explore the building, only to get lost and having to call one of the members or their manager to bring her back, and now she’s banned from doing that too (it only happened four times, sheesh! get over it!). 

at least, today is their last day having to suffer in waiting rooms. the promotion cycle is ending already (it feels like it’s gone by so fast!) and since there’s not much left for her to do in their final wait, she opens up youtube to find a video that can entertain her.

curious, she types the group’s name into the search bar and waits for the results to load. there are their official videos like music videos and dance practices, a few special stages from festivals, and surprisingly, there's a variety of fan-made contents.

meiqi skips over a compilation of wendy’s singing (she saves it for later though), and a video that claims to introduce the newest maknae of and*roma, landing on a peculiar title, only uploaded a few hours ago: learn the alphabet with and*roma: sunmi's birthday vlive edition!

the video starts.

meiqi is laughing herself to tears by the end of the video. when they had planned to surprise sunmi on her birthday, she had no idea that the night would have gone the way it did. the memory itself is enough to reduce her to a hiccuping laughter, but the way the fan had edited the clips together and added commentary, it’s just... it’s pure gold.

“guys!” she manages to yell out between cackles. meiqi wipes a tear from her right eye as she flings herself off the couch, rushing towards the closest member to her. she rewinds the video to the beginning before shoving her phone screen in front of their faces. “you have to watch this!”

「 WHITE DAY(NIGHT)  」

days were busy, preparing for his debut, for the concert and also getting used to the blonde hair. he had gotten more used to it over time, so now it wasn’t an eyesore anymore. jaehyun was also slowly adjusting to the other convex members, not only those in his room, though getting used to hyun was still a hurdle since he had basically been away.

other than that, there was one thing lingering in his mine-- it had been lingering in his thoughts ever since he and juhee ( @rkjuhee​ ) had properly made up. it was a task for him to realize it as well, as he thought it wasn’t the most ideal situation but he ha eventually come to terms with it. jaehyun being jaehyun wasn’t the best at keeping something like this to himself-- his feelings, while learning the lyrics to pretty u, aju nice and boomboom but now also the new songs that would be on the mini-album. especially pinwheel and smile flower.

jaehyun had come to realize his own feelings for juhee, his best friend-- though for once he had contemplated for a while before he had decided on what he would and should to-- ‘ it will burden her, ’ was his first thought, he knew her that well but he also knew that with his feelings their friendship would change and he didn’t want to have to avoid or ignore juhee.

earlier in the day he had texted jiwon, asking her if she would be fine with meeting up-- he’d be at their regular spot by the swings. now-- now he was waiting for her, with a beanie on to hide his new hair-- he didn’t want too many things to startle her at once, she was sure one surprise would be more than enough.

the phone connects and sunmi is beaming to the camera. a stream of comments flow in: and*roma fans excitedly wishing her happy birthday and asking what she’s going to do for her first vlive broadcast. there’s already over a hundred thousand hearts. they’ve been working hard before the broadcast. she’s excited.

“hello everyone!” she greets cheerfully. she see a new wave of comments. many freaking out at her saying anything. it makes her grin. she sees a few comments asking about the other members of and*roma, what they were doing. sunmi blinks. “ah! they’re somewhere else right now. some are probably in their rooms sleeping, i think.” she keeps a wide smile. “it’s okay! we’ll do this video silently so we won’t disturb them, hm?”

she let’s some time pass where she’s just watching the comments. thousands of people asking different things at once. the comments scroll quickly. she hums. “are you guys coming to my birthday fan meeting? it’s tomorrow! check it out on nova’s website. you’ll come see me right?” there’s many english speaking fans. she figured she should talk to them as well. “i was telling them i have a birthday fan meeting. i know many of you aren’t in korea.....so i feel like a vlive can give everyone a chance to celebrate. and it’s late here so it’s earlier in other parts of the world.” this triggers an onslaught of comments of fans who are in shock with her speaking english. “i’m from new york! of course i know how so speak english.”

sunmi props the camera up on the opposite end of the kitchen island. she smiles. with a step back she makes sure she’s in frame even as she begins to bake. “i’m going to make tiramisu! i really enjoy it and i think the girls would like it as well.”

she starts with light whipping the cream. she makes sure to show everyone how it goes, angling the bowl and lifting the whisk so they all could see. she smiles. it’s a little lonely to make a tiramisu on her own but it’s slightly less lonely with everyone engaging on the comments. while she works she figures it’s good to fill the empty space by talking.

“this time last year i was going through a difficult time.” she figures anyone here would remember or know about the supernova project but there’s always a chance that there are new fans who never watched the show when it aired or still haven’t gone back to watch it in the first place. “it was the start of the final month of the supernova project. i was feeling really discouraged.” she doesn’t think people understand how pivotal that point in her career was. she was going to leave nova after. it was already too much time spent. she was nearing her thirties. she didn’t want to wait any longer. “and it was my birthday. i couldn’t spend it with my family. i only had everyone in nova. i’m glad they chose to celebrate it with me. but i know we were all tired and wanted to go home, see our families. i really wanted to see my siblings. it’s hard being away from them so much. everyone in and*roma and per_se made sure i wasn’t lonely.”

the tiramisu was going well. she continued. “i have four siblings.” she peeks to check the comments. many were pointing out ashe. she nods. “yeah, ashe is my little sister. i’m the eldest. i also have my brother sungdong. a lot of you know him as an old royal trainee.” their parents had gotten married some time ago. it wasn’t even a large transition for them. “and we have two younger siblings. the twins.” she pauses, watching the comments pass. “i will see them later in the week for a family birthday celebration!”

just as sunmi gets ready to say they’re almost done preparing the tiramisu, the lights go out. the soft glow of the phone is the only light source. it’s not much, since the screen is reflecting the darkness in the room. sunmi straightens, turning to the doorway of the kitchen. “what’s going on--” she says out loud. she’s ready to call for the girls to see if they noticed the power outage but instead they come in, turning on the light as they enter with the cake in hand.

juhee is holding a cake with the others following closely. they all sing happy birthday as they walk. though judging by the walking speed, juhee is particularly nervous being tasked with holding the birthday cake. she’s so tense as she walks and tries hard not to take large steps. juhee stumbles, quickly recovering with s shuffle of her feet. the jerky motion causes the cake to tilt forward....gravity takes care of the rest.

there’s a chorus of simultaneous screams: all of them poised to grab at the cake even though they don’t make a swipe for it. meiqi seems to fall dramatically like a soap opera star as the cake does. she let’s out a loud wail. had she yelled out “no” it would have been a clip straight out of one of the cheesy dramas where the lead girl gets injured in a car accident. wendy is the loudest with her scream. it’s probably what startled sunmi to yell as well. the candles on the cake rolled towards the couch. the candles managed to ignite the couch corner which sparked another chorus of panicked screams and yells. kaeun is quick to grab a cup of water and douse the tiny flames.

they all stay silent for a moment, looking at the destroyed cake on the kitchen floor and the scorched couch that can just barely be seen in the frame of the video. then seulgi chimes in with, “.....well we can steal eat the part of the cake that didn’t touch the floor.” sunmi looks at her, appalled. “don’t do th--”

meiqi is quick to interject: “eat the cake that touched the floor too! we are clean women there is no need to waste good expensive cake!” sunmi repeated herself, louder this time. “don’t eat cake off the floor!” seulgi shrugs. wendy seems to agree with the sentiment. “we did pay a lot of money for it.” kaeun grabs the serving plate the cake was on and a spatula. she immediately starts to scoop it back where it was.

sunmi looks into the vlive camera in disbelief. she’s not sure how the general consensus became to eat the floor cake.

meiqi uses the distraction to dip her fingers into the floor cake (or floork as seulgi hilariously refers it as) and draw whiskers on sunmi’s face with the icing. it’s goopy and sunmi swears it feels icky. “whiskers!” she declares cutely. she makes whispers on sunmi’s other cheek as well. she picks up the vlive camera and turns it to point at the leader. “say meow sunmi.....sunmeow!”

sunmi waves meiqi off for such a corny play on words before she turns her attention to the others. “yah! don’t eat that floork! i’m making tiramisu. we’ll just finish it together...right?” they didn’t look too convinced but if they were going to eat the floork then at least off camera. “help me finish it guys come~” she reaches behind her, pulling juhee right next to her so they can get it done together.

they finish up the vlive that way: making a new birthday tiramisu together. they cheer when it hits 12 am: marking the actual beginning of sunmi’s birthday. the cake is completed and topped off just as the vlive is set to be done. though the last words of the actual vlive are seulgi saying, “i think eating the floork won’t be that bad.”

Into the Unknown

Between Seulgi and Juhee, Wendy is admittedly more concerned about Juhee. After all, Seulgi has at least three years of training and has lots of exposure prior to debut. On the other hand, Juhee seems fairly green in comparison to the rest of them. She knows how overwhelming everything can get. There’s a few more hours before their comeback showcase, and Wendy decides to take it upon herself to check on their new maknae. 

Wendy closes her book, marking it where she stopped. She walks over to Juhee and sits on what space is available for her to sit on. “You holding up over there?” Wendy asks with a kind smile. She shakes her head, realizing how vague she sounds. “I guess I should have phrased that better, huh? How are you feeling? Nervous? Excited? Hungry?” She laughs. Admittedly, she had been more hungry than nervous  at their debut showcase last year. Then again, that was because she was too nervous to eat a proper meal.

sunmi was sure to bow to every staff member when they arrived to the recording studio. she knows with juhee and herself being the only ones here today it meant that they had to do a good job and find interesting topics to talk about. and to make sure that while they elaborate what’s on the script, they don’t venture too far from what they’re supposed to be talking about.

“are you ready?” she asks juhee, whom she would now have to refer to as sora for the duration of the interview. it’s like an on switch. once they’re in their professional environment, sunmi’s demeanour changes slightly. just enough of a mask to keep her in good graces. “come,” she gestures for juhee to sit in a seat that’s not too far from her but gives her her own camera to focus on her.

sunmi is very aware that juhee is new to all this. despite being an adult and more than capable, she’s heard the younger’s fears about her debut. so in attempt to be more mindful, sunmi is trying to look out for her more often than she would for say meiqi or wendy. “is it comfortable? do you need help adjusting the microphone?”

「 the first win  」

“   winning isn’t getting ahead of others. It’s getting ahead of yourself. ”

convex is a popular group, that much jaehyun learned their first week of promoting with all the fans present and rooting for them ( even him ). it was overwhelmingly positive the response was and while he was standing there, in the middle of the crowd on stage he wondered to himself. was it too much to hope for them to win number one that week? what did winning number one even mean-- would that mean they had done well and that the comeback was a success.

jaehyun knew that they were up for number one but never in his wildest dreams did he think that he would hear, convex-- coming out of the presenter's mouths but he did and jaehyun's eyes widened as the stage lights glared him in the eyes. his eyes went naturally to the other members and a look of confusion and perplexed amazement became apparent on his face. then they got congratulated and everything was a blur to jaehyun, he couldn't believe that this was actually happening-- for the first time since he had become a trainee he felt that all the effort he had put in was paying off.

this feeling-- he remembered the feeling of winning and hearing fans cheer, it was such a familiar rush that he felt an overwhelming sensation of nostalgia burst up within him and jaehyun tried his best to keep his feeling contained as he stood on the stage but it overwhelmed him and he looked at the others, the other older members and wondered what they felt, what they thought-- they must have felt incredibly anxious about this comeback since they had suddenly gotten five new members within two months.

suddenly he felt himself tear up slightly-- the memories flooded into his mind when he won his first-ever volleyball game, the excitement he felt back then came over him. just for a moment he was 15 again, a fifteen-year-old broken boy that desired his father's and older brother's recognition never got but oh how he had wanted it. eventually, that boy became colder but now he felt something more inside him. jaehyun felt proud of his own development, of how he had contributed to the group this time around-- not that they won because they had him ( jaehyun was sure convex would have won regardless ) but because he was apart of something that was groundbreaking.

the minute they got back into their waiting room jaehyun grabbed a hold of his phone and smiled,  on stage he hadn't said anything but he had been standing along with the others, smiling as tears had welled up in his eyes, tears he had make sure to immediately dry from his eyes but now-- his eyes had a soft red hue as he texted two people he wanted to share this with.

「 all around me are familiar faces  」

“   the thing that scares us the most is when familiar things                        operate in unfamiliar ways.  ”

it was here, march 27th, they are at the special concert that convex had been invited to perform at the music bank concert. it would be all the new members first public appearance as convex, it wasn't only them there while waiting backstage he saw other groups as well. most notably he saw and*roma because there juhee ( @rkjuhee​  ) was, looking a little lost like she always does but recently these traits of her had become cuter and cuter to him.

his mind felt a mess,  there was also per_se not far from where jaehyun was standing and in that group he knew haknyeon.

there were so many familiar faces, changmin and juyeon he had gotten used to over the last two months but this would be the new normal for him. seeing familiar people, in unfamiliar situations until these situations became familiar to him as well. there was something overwhelming about it and before he knew, it was their turn to go on stage and all at once he heard the screams of convex' fans. it felt like a vacuum sucking him in but before he was completely gone in the corner of his eye he spotted juhee, his breathing slowed down and eventually he felt calm.

with her it had always been like this, peaceful-- quiet, just right. maybe he had been a fool for not noticing it sooner-- this feeling felt both familiar and unfamiliar.

when they were about to go on stage, jaehyun walked passed her and in the split moment they walked by each other he glanced down at her, a small smile of confidence could be seen if you were close enough, "wish me luck," he told her before walking onto the stage his head held high as he takes his starting position for aju nice first. jaehyun had stayed up for so many nights just practicing for this moment, the music started and he could hear cheol's voice in his earpieces counting-- then on the correct beat he started singing, ' 아침엔 ~ ', in this moment he was full of confidence, the rest of the performance ( at least on his end ) went well, he managed to perform, give enough power to the dance moves. during his performance he kept eye contact with the cameras that seemed to be focusing on him, when they weren't he looked straight ahead with a smile especially during the chorus, his dance moves sharp when they needed to be, everything was going better than he had expected.

then it was all over, in the blink of an eye.
