The concept of RPF in MHA specifically is something a close friend and I discuss quite often! I kinda crack up thinking about it all and the nonsense that can occur from in universe fandom spaces.

While only semi-related to the concept depicted here, my friend actually wrote a really cool fic regarding this concept and a slightly different aspect of our little situations regarding it. You can find it here! I'd recommend giving it a read I still get a kick out of it. This would probably occur concurrently to the fic until certain events that are discussed at the end. Maybe I'll draw some stuff about how I imagined the post fic stuff, too.

lawlight is literally one of the ships of all time. they’re soulmates. they fucking hate each other. they practically invented toxic yaoi. they’re each others only true friend. they understand each other on a deeply intimate level. they use this to try to kill each other. they were handcuffed together for three months and never once clarified what the sleeping situation was. their internal monologues match each others. there’s an 8 year age gap and that’s the least problematic aspect of them. one of them has a canonically homophobic girlfriend. he’s not into her. the other guy actually is. the foot scene.

something i find really refreshing about death note as an aroace person is that light’s lack of attraction to misa or anyone is never used as evidence of how evil he is, and the manga is actually pretty intentional about avoiding that pitfall. like, a lesser story would have yotsuba light be legitimately attracted to misa, and state that the ability to feel attraction is the difference between light and kira, between good and evil. but instead, the difference between light and kira is that, while both feel a lack of canonical romantic attraction toward anyone, light is honest about that and refuses to fake romantic attraction, while kira is willing to manipulate the feelings of others. light’s lack of attraction to misa is never used to demonize him — in fact, how he treats that lack of attraction shows us that, when hes not kira, he does have a genuine moral code

thinking about light who’s very aware hes popular with the ladies, but doesn’t seem to have any interest in dating before he becomes kira. wondering if his firm boundary about manipulating the feelings of others comes from being an aroace person who’s also quite attractive to others, and being very aware of that.

light yagami was clearly so miserable, chasing grades and suppressing himself, trying to fit in and emulate normal teenage behavior, popular based on his looks and abilities but unknown to everyone and generally detached, a child prodigy experiencing massive burnout not because everything was too hard but because it's ultimately pointless. sure he can become a cop/detective but the crime will never stop and people continue to suffer and who knows if thats even what his goal was or if he was just fulfilling what everyone expected of him. and then this kid who always had to be perfect because everyones counting on it, he needs to be #1 again and again and be a straight a student, be the top of his class, of everyone in the country.

like if death note werent a tragedy it would be a romcom where he finally meets someone smarter than he is and he's a guy who is the other side of the same coin, visibly unkempt, openly morally grey at best, doesnt try to mask his obvious neurodivergence, and light would hate him. hate him sooo much because he did all this work to be the ideal son, student, man, and heres the #1–#3 detective living authentically, detached from the society light hates, praised for his intellect, always coming out on top no matter what. and hes jealous. he hates his stupid bare feet and eyes that either dont meet his or stare too long that completely read him and have figured out exactly what he is and who he is despite his attempts to shove it all down.
