Hoyas are fast becoming a bit of an obsession, second only to peperomias. There's so much variation in the different types and cultivars. Wavy curly leaves to straight long leaves to dimpled cordate leaves. Solid to variegated to splashy. This philodendron's gotten huge and whacky. I'm debating if I should stake/trellis it to tame its leaves a bit. Or maybe I should go for broke and give it a hard prune to cut it back. Here's another installation of The Ugly. My Boston fern has really suffered from the dry winter air, even with the humidifier running all day. I've been advised to cut back all of the fronds and let the plant "rest" til Springtime, when conditions are more favorable. I'm not surprised it has come to this though - I always knew ferns would be a challenge given their humidity needs. Think I'll just have to admire their beautiful fronds from afar from now on. (Oh but they're so pretty and delicate!)

Spotlight on fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata). It's easy to get overwhelmed by FLF care because it's so jarring when they lose one of their giant leaves. Don't panic, they don't need much more than most other houseplants - don't overwater, give it lots of light, keep temps stable. Despite reports of it needing indirect sun, I find that indoors it can tolerate quite a bit of direct sun in my climate, and that it actually seems to prefer it. (Slowly acclimate your plants to direct sun over time or else they will get sunburn.) Always let the potting medium dry out slightly before watering again. I use a wooden chopstick inserted into the soil to check moisture.
