New Carver Apartments

Just south of Los Angeles’ fast-growing downtown, and immediately adjacent to the I-10 freeway, Skid Row Housing Trust’s 57,000 SF New Carver Apartments was built to explore how architecture can foster positive changes for highly vulnerable and dramatically underserved occupants. Situated nearly a mile from the heart of Skid Row, the project’s 97 units provide permanent housing for formerly homeless elderly and disabled residents – building a place for solace, support, and individual growth in contrast to the city’s chronic issue of homelessness.

The New Carver Apartments aim to construct not only a new optimism for public space and public housing but to form an armature for change through the architectural program, organization, and form. By incorporating communal spaces – kitchens, dining areas, gathering spaces and gardens – into the Carver’s raised form and medical/social services support facilities into the lower portion, the project allows its residents to begin to reconnect with each other and the city at large.

So difficult to get communal housing to be really inclusive while maintaining individuality, especially for these "at-risk" residents trying to get on their feet.
