Young, SMART, and Broke
Let’s be honest here, saving money is just as hard as giving it up to spend on things you don't want to spend it on. As college students, we are at a time in our lives where things just don’t come too easy. I am definitely not complaining. These have been some of the best years of my life. I may struggle some, but who doesn’t? Obviously there are more important things to worry about than what you're going to eat for dinner. But I just really believe we shouldn't all have to survive off of Cup O’ Noodles and sink water for four or more years.
Don't get me wrong! As a freshman, that is literally all that I survived off of. I ate cheap and gross food, I ate off of my dining dollars as much as possible, and I prayed for care packages from my family including gift cards and homemade snacks.
Growing up, I have really tried to learn the importance of not taking things for granted. I know it seems silly, but people these days throw money around like it’s nothing. I had a roommate one time that was embarrassed to use food coupons. She thought people would think she was “poor” so she wouldn’t even attempt to get a cheaper meal.
These places make these deals available so I really feel like I am wasting money when I don't take them up on the offers. Whether it be a rewards app, a discount grocery delivery, a daily deal, or even copying coupons (which I don't recommend to a beginner), find your own way to save money. In the long run, the money really does add up. Then you can spend it on more practical things, like $600 college books.
Me when I found out I was blacklisted
Greatest Hack, Biggest Consequence
You know what they say, every good thing must come to an end. And boy, do I have a story for you. At the beginning of my junior year, I really started to realize how annoyed I got with lectures from my parents about my spending habits. If I had to choose a time when all of this food hack research began, it would have to be with this specific night.
For a little bit of background, I moved into a new housing complex in Raleigh summer of 2016. I was so excited to finally be out of tiny dorms and tiny apartments. On move in day with check-in, you received your keys, your parking pass, and a giant envelope filled with food coupons. This was my time to shine. We had magnets hanging up with different discounts on them, and I cut out all of my roommates coupons they received so we could all use them together. What I found at the back of the envelope was what really did me in. A black and white copy, no signature, no expiration date coupon for a Domino’s medium pizza of your choice. There was not even a topping limit!
So naturally, knowing who I am, I decided to march up to the complex’s clubhouse study room and make 25 copies of this coupon. Did I feel kind of guilty? Of course I felt bad, but let’s be honest, Domino’s had this coming for them with this shady coupon.
Over a course of, I’d say, maybe 3 months or so, I was calling Domino’s every week. I had a whole spill about my move-in packet and knew exactly what I wanted on my pizza each time. Each time they delivered the pizzas and I would give the delivery guy a few dollars as a tip. But I was eating free pizza and nothing was going to stop me.
Except...one night, me and my roommate were especially hungry and broke (once again) and I said “Hey, thank goodness we still have 8 pizza coupons left!” I limited myself to 25 copies. I didn’t want to feel like I was actually robbing them. This was my 17th time calling them to use the coupon. Yeah, you read that right; 17th time. I started my speech about receiving a coupon in my envelope and I was interrupted by the person on the other line with “Um Gracyn?”
*CRICKETS*
I didn’t know what to say or what to do! I simply just answered, “Yes?”. That was the moment I was told I have been blacklisted from the telephone delivery system. For sure, this was one of the most humiliating moments of my life. Ever since then, I have really tried to not take it too far with the whole “free food is the best food” thing. I let my inner need to find discounts get the best of me.
Graciously, they still let me come in to order food, but definitely not over the phone (that is, unless I use an alias name and call from a restricted number). Finding discounts and deals is always an awesome life hack, just don’t let it get the best of you. It just may result in being #1 on a chain restaurant’s blacklist.
On the weekends you’ve done really good at saving money while eating #treatyoself #youdeserveit
Discount Days Are the Best Days
This post is going to be about one of my most favorite discounted food hacks that I know: discount and deal days. There have been so many times that I have checked by bank account only to see under $10 in there. (Now you know when I say broke, I actually mean really broke.) I attend college in Raleigh, North Carolina, and this city is FILLED with restaurants. Now how is a girl like me, who loves to eat, supposed to find somewhere a step above McDonalds or Bojangles with under $10? Don’t get me wrong, I am not above a McDonalds 2 for $3 meal or a Bojangles box for under $5. But, after a while, it gets really old. Plus, it’s like your clothes shrink or something because all of the sudden your jeans are fitting a little tighter than you remembered...
One night, me and my roommate were both were hungry yet broke. So what did we do? We searched the world wide web for answers. We came across a site that listed off different deals for restaurants around us. A lot of people take these daily deals for granted. I work in the food business as a waitress and we have daily drink/food specials. For example, we sell tacos and on Tuesday, they are buy one get one free! Your bill is literally cut in half. Either people don’t realize it or don't care enough, but to me that is something I simply couldn't turn down.
So far, after that night, me and my roommate have a pretty solid restaurant routine we do to get these deals. On Mondays, we go to Moe’s. I have mentioned this restaurant in previous posts, as they are really great about giving out discounts and deals. On Mondays, they have a $6.49 burrito combo deal. On any other day, your meal would add up to over $10. I know it doesn’t seem like that big of a “steal” but $3 really could come in handy throughout your week. On Tuesdays, we go to my favorite place in Raleigh, East Village Grill. Tuesdays are wing nights, where they serve .50 wings and $2 Bush Lights. I know, sounds like such a healthy and girly meal. Wednesdays we head to Cameron Village to the one and only, Village Draft House for $3.50 drafts. We will usually split an appetizer and an entree, which are already decently priced. Thursdays, my favorite night, we go to Buffalo Wild Wings for .65 wings. Yes, I know, we already eat wings Tuesday. But how could you pass up deals like these? Most weekend nights, not too many restaurants offer daily deals. On these nights we do one of two things:
Split something
Treat yo’self night
This really just depends on what our bank accounts are looking like and how well we have stuck to our deals nights. Even though Raleigh is what folks may call a “college town”, most restaurants have these deals in other areas. It is definitely worth checking out and making your very own deals routine.
Crazy Couponing: Broke College Kid Edition
I know we have all seen the crazy coupon shows. The ones where people quit their day jobs to coupon full time. They dedicate their entire day to collecting coupons from newspapers, magazines, neighbors, grocery stores, etc. Most of them cut them out and organize them into huge binders. Usually, once or twice a month, these ‘couponers’ take their organized binders with their calculated coupons and buy thousands of dollars worth of groceries. They buy things in bulk, such as 125 tubes of toothpaste or 300 Gatorades, and once they get up to the register, their final totals are almost always $10 or under. Although I do think these people have way too much time on their hands, I have always been jealous and wondered if I could do that myself.
Considering I am a college student juggling 18 credit hours, a sales job, a waitress job, and let’s not forget, a social life, I am pretty sure it would be nearly impossible for me to join the ‘crazy coupon’ world. For a week, every night before I went to bed, I would drive by all my neighbors’ house and collect their newspapers, hoping there would be some insane deal in there. Long story short, turns out I have no use for BOGO baby food or half priced cinnamon sticks.
I am a very determined person and I was not going to give this up. I studied up on it and after lots of trial and error, I finally found my go-to way to find grocery coupons: an app called Instacart. Instacart is an app/website that not only finds deals, but also delivers the groceries to you on the same day! There are lots of other apps and websites that do the same, such as:
Shipt
Safeway
PrimePantry
Life is too short to stress about groceries; get them discounted and delivered.

The Struggle is Real
Being a broke college student these days is not easy. Here are some examples for you: You have to worry about your expensive rent you pay for a crappy house just to be close to campus. You have to worry about your utility bill, which you hope you’ve successfully brought down, even if it’s just twenty less dollars, by not having the AC on during the day. You have to worry about your friends wanting to go out on the weekends and forcing yourself to drink the cheapest draft beer they offer opposed to a $13 fruity drink that most definitely tastes a whole lot better. You have to worry about your monthly ebill you get a notification for in your student email from NC State itself, reminding you how much money you owe just to be able to go to class. Speaking of class, where are you going to park to try to not have to pay $1 for every thirty minutes, or god forbid, getting a $20-$60 parking ticket? I could go on and on about all the money struggles a college student has, but for me personally, one of the biggest struggles is: Where and how the heck am I gonna eat decent food that doesn't immediately cause my dad to call me screaming? (Yeah my dad can see every amount of money I spend and where I spend it at- joint bank accounts suck).
Everyone talks about how college students have to eat ramen every day and steal milk from the dining halls, but that’s not true. There are ways around that. If you really do some research and study on ways to get cheap food, especially as college students, you will be surprised. We live in a day and age where technology offers almost anything. For example, for all of you that don't know, there is a super helpful app called “Hooked”. It is currently the #1 food and drink app in college towns. When you open the app, you will find a list of restaurants around you that are offering deals on their food at that certain time. These restaurants will scan your phone through the app and immediately grant you the current deal they have. For example, right now, there is a Subway offer for a $3 six inch breakfast sub. Only $3!? This is just one example of thousands of apps that provide discount foods. Most individual restaurants have them as well, such as,
Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin’ Rewards
Moe’s Rockin’ Rewards
McDonalds Deals
My Chili’s Rewards
MyPanera
Red Robin Loyalty
Sonic
MyTacoBell
Being broke sometimes calls for desperation. Don’t be too good for free stuff. If they’re giving it away, take it. You’ve most likely earned it.
