15 NEW MESHES. I thought we’d never get here, but watching one Austen adaptation after another on repeat got me through the hell that oft plagued this set. As this is pretty much a love letter to Austen and her much-beloved heroines, every single piece is named after a character or location found in her novels. 

A thousand thanks to my lovely testers: @nolan-sims, @thesimsblues, and @blu-sims! I managed to fix like 85% of the issues/oversights they discovered (& omitted one dress entirely due to a weird distortion issue), but alas, I can never manage smooth weights/no tearing on my long dresses!

Writing Theory: Introducing your Characters

First impressions are key to any success as most people will tell you. When writing a story, you will be selling not only a plot to your readers but you will be selling people to them. The audience needs your characters to navigate your story but a bad introduction might sour that very important relationship. So how can we make a good impression on readers. For @sleepingobsidian & @rayfromikemenvampire

What should be Included in a Character Introduction Scene

An establishing moment: an action or reaction that tells us who your character is without telling us. Let the reader know exactly what kind of person they're dealing with. Example: An injured Jamie Fraser being both gorgeous and covered in the blood of Redcoats.

Introduction to important traits: Who is your Character? Are they irresponsible? Funny? Clever? A complete jackass? Example: Ron Weasley being friendly, accepting & warm to Harry.

Description: What does your character look like? Keep it to minimum though, we're telling stories not advertising for a make-up advert. Example: almost every character introduction ever

A memorable detail: This is optional of course but adding something memorable about your character will keep them in the reader's head. Example: Leo Tyrell's introduction in a Feast of Crows is quite memorable because he is easily becomes a hated character perhaps the quickest in the entire universe.

Kinds of Introduction

There is no one way to introduce any character whether protagonist or side character. They are 4 ways to introduce your character.

The Backstory

This introduces the character to us by way of their backstory. Here we usually get a quick run through of the character's life story and how they find themselves in their present circumstances. This way the audience a chance to get to know your character and in way grow up with them. We begin to understand their motives and attitudes early in the story. For example, Jacqueline Wilson's Hetty Feather opens with the protagonist talking about her early beginning as a baby, first given away to the Foundling Hospital and then to a Foster family.

Reputation

Sometimes a character is introduced verbally before they actually appears before us. This is a way of planting seeds of contrast and interest within the audience long before they actually meet the character. For example, we hear about Marwyn the Mage long before we actually meet him.

The Typical Day

Some characters are introduced on what I like to call at the Point Before It All Goes to Shit or (PBIAGTS). We follow the character through their day and get to know their world through their eyes. We watch the character interact with others and get to know them as they are before the PBIAGTS. Example: Tris Prior and Katniss Everdeen both kick off their stories with their typical days right before the PBIAGTS.

Right Smack Bang in the Middle

Another interesting way of introducing your character is to have to audience meet them right in the middle of a crisis. This is an interesting one because we begin on par with the character, confused about what's happening and why. The reader has no choice but to trust your character, they are the only thing they can cling too. For example: We meet Jason Grace in Heroes of Olympus after he wakes up on the bus with amnesia with no iota who or what he is.

8 rules of thumb for writers

The Adverb Rule: Only use an adverb if it changes the meaning of the verb. ie. “He whispers quietly” vs “He whispers sadly”.

The ‘Said’ Rule: Similar to the adverb rule– only use a different dialogue tag when it changes the meaning of the dialogue. The most common exception would be ‘asked’.

The Dialogue Tag Rule: Only tag dialogue when absolutely necessary. My suggestion for this is to write the first draft with minimal tags then, while editing, add tags in where there may be confusion.

The Kiss Rule: When writing romance, if your characters need to kiss (or show any other physical affection) for readers to know they’re in love, they don’t have good chemistry.

The Infamous ‘Show Don’t Tell’ Rule: Not only is it fairly self-explanatory, but you’ve probably heard it a million and one times. Basically: if you can show it, do. ie. “she thought the man was annoying” vs. “she rolls her eyes when the man begins to speak”.

The Exceptions to the ‘Show Don’t Tell’ Rule: My personal rule for this is show stuff that’s relevant to the story but tell stuff that’s going on in the background. “She rolls her eyes when the man begins to speak” is a good place to show, but you should opt for, “she thought the curtains were ugly” when simply describing scenery.

The Really/Very/Etc. Rule: In exposition, don’t overuse ‘filler words’ like ‘really’ or ‘very’. Of course there are some exceptions, but just like other adverbs, only use them for a reason.

The Change Rule: Just like you wouldn’t end a novel if no change took place, don’t end a chapter unless there is a clear, apparent change from the beginning of the chapter. If a scene doesn’t have a change, recognize that it might just be a filler and consider deleting it, if not heavily revising.

Obviously no rules should be followed all of the time, but these are some good habits to get into while writing. Best of luck!

How to Write a Realistic Argument

Everyone argues.

Whether it be with a friend, sibling, parent, or coworker—arguments usually break out whenever there’s a stark contrast in opinion over certain things, which can happen a lot.

There are a variety of different kinds of arguments involving a wide range of people with different tempers. Because of this, writing arguments can be a bit difficult, but fear not, for this post is here to help!

1. Know The Writing Style of an Argument

For a very serious argument, the characters probably won’t stop and listen to what their opponent has to say.

It’s quick, choppy, and broken—each character shoving their emotions at one another and trying to get their point across without bothering to understand the other side’s opinions.

There should be a lot of em-dashes and italicized words for emphasis, and if it’s between two people, you want as few speech tags as possible; because there’s going to be a lot of back and forth, speech tags can serve to trip up the flow of the argument rather than help them.

When you do want speech tags or if there are multiple people arguing at once here’s some examples you can use:

Roared

Screamed

Yelled

Bellowed

Barked

Hissed

Shouted

Accused

Interrupted

Growled

Snarled

Spat

Screeched

Shrilled

But you also must know that your characters won’t just be standing stock still and yelling at one another; they’re going to be moving around, so here are some things you can describe your character doing during an argument

Expression contorting

Eyes narrowing

Speaking through clenched teeth

Baring their teeth

Lips twisting (into a sneer/into a snarl)

Hands balling into fists

Trembling

Breaking things/knocking stuff over

Pointing accusingly

Shoving

Spittle flying from their mouth

Stamping their feet

Face getting hot

Vein in forehead popping

Blood roaring in their ears/heart pounding

And if you want, to build tension you can put it in a dangerous place, like at the edge of a cliff or something—so you know fully well that if one of them goes too far it may end up with the other’s accidental death.
