Got to congratulate a friend on their sobriety.

Needing tomato sauce for a new chili recipe, I reached as far as my 5’5.5” shrunken height would allow, but the Kroger brand sauce was just out of reach. The shelf for single cans was empty. All that remained was a stack of four 24-can cardboard trays, perched just above my grasp.

A quick scan of the aisle revealed no one tall enough to help.

I set my basket on the floor. Standing on tiptoe and stretching as far as my aging body could manage, I tugged the top tray toward me, gauging when it might tip and dump 24 cans of tomato paste onto the top shelf, onto me, and onto the floor. I knew curious, judgmental shoppers would quickly appear, drawn by the clatter.

But it didn’t collapse. It didn’t tear. Two cans slipped out, bounced off my chest, and landed softly in my basket.

Quietly. Without notice.

I set the tray back on the shelf, picked up my basket, and checked out.

It was a good thing that happened to me today.

In an area of which I have little expertise, other than having skateboarded when skateboards were made from roller skates cut into two sections and attached with screws to a board, I learned that the Skate 2 game is better than Skate 3 as the rhythm and tactile feel isn't as quick in 3.

I found some of my favorite sausages on sale at the Kroger on Schrock Road this morning. The bacon cheddar smokers were marked down to $2.66 from their regular price of $3.99. A good bargain, and good for the freezer.

As I headed toward the exit, I saw two women laughing, one lounging on a grocery cart filled with aluminum baking pans, likely leftovers from the holidays. They were laughing about how the woman had placed her chocolates in a sales cart, mistaking it for her own, and started walking to the checkout. Her friend stopped her with a quizzical look and asked if she knew what she was doing.

They were still laughing when we struck up a conversation about the nearby markdown carts and the chocolate deals they held.

One of them pointed out that the cart I had picked from had the chocolates marked down to 88 cents, while the next cart had them for just 77. I bought four.

One of the women noticed my sausage and asked if there were any more at that price. I told her I had gotten the only two that were marked down. Her disappointment vanished when I handed her one, along with a message that they would be on sale again soon, and maybe we would both be back that day.

Later that afternoon, I stopped at the Maxtown Kroger and found another package marked down to $2.18. I had two again.

It was a good thing that happened to me today.

Retrieved one of each of the old-style banners hanging on light posts in Uptown after they were discarded when replaced with new banners.
