alana:

Alana is glad to hear that he actually doesn’t HATE coffee. Most people she met who preferred tea over coffee didn’t like coffee because they found it was too strong, or too bitter. Alana honestly never understood that. To her, it was caffeine. & although there were days she preferred a fancy long named beverage from Starbucks, she would generally settle for anything anyone had. As long as it was caffeinated.

Sugar in coffee. She noted that in the back of her mind. She assumed there would be days where Jack would need a pick-me-up. There would definitely be multiple of those kinds of days, so she liked to keep it in the back of her mind JUST IN CASE she needed to rescue him from himself.

But just when Alana opened her mouth, about to ask him what he took in his tea————her hearthonestly sank on his behalf. Alana stops, dead in her tracks, and spins around slowly, as if it were some dramatic tv show. She has a hand over her mouth and she shook her head slightly. ‘ How Jack? How? ‘ was all she could manage to say. Truthfully, she thought maybe if they had of gotten some caffeine into him sooner he could have gotten his caffeiene and not forgotten.

‘ Do you think there’s any hope of remembering after we get some coffee into you? ‘ she says, lowering her hand but looking up at him. ‘ Maybe it will restart the engine? ‘

     Jack stops, only slightly after Alana stops, only a few steps behind her - just far enough that he doesn’t walk right into her. He tries his best to keep his eyes open; the moment he closes them for anything more than a blink is the moment he’ll fall asleep - or at least that’s how it feels.

     ‘I guess I stayed awake for too long and it slipped my mind.’ It’s easier to speak in longer sentences now; he no longer fears forgetting whatever it was he was trying to remember. ‘Maybe coffee will help - maybe I need to sleep. That might help me remember.’

     But wait, wasn’t the reason for staying awake so he wouldn’t forget? What does it matter anymore, though? Whatever he was trying to remember was now no more than a faint, distant memory, refusing to come back into shore.

alana:

There’s a PERMANENT smile painted across her lips, she swears. She just genuinely feel happy.  As much as she really is CONCERNED that Jack isn’t sleeping any, she doesn’t want to scare him away by becoming overcaring. Which was something Alana really did have  a tenancy to do. Of course, it was logical, and made A LOT of sense that even out side of her job she would have a hard time not being concerned with people who were her friends, the same way she was concerned about her patients. But, actively she did make a point not to.

She says a small aha! in a very victorious tone. ‘ I knew it was tea you’d prefer. I just had a gut feeling about that. But, ‘ she laughs, as she starts to lead the way—————-she has a place in mind, and it’s NOT very far. ‘ I think you NEED coffee. Sure, there are caffeinated teas, but I don’t think they would do the trick right now. ‘ She looks back, making sure he’s still following her and didn’t wander off into the distance.

‘ We can just put LOTS of cream and sugar in your coffee. It’ll drown the actual coffee taste out. ‘

     Jack smiles, but it appears as more of a twitch of his lips. It’s all he can manage, save for his feet dragging along the ground every couple of steps. It’s as though his little explanation of why he’s so tired had drained him of any remaining energy. He felt like there was some snarky comment to be made about the fact that Alana had a “gut feeling” that he enjoyed tea more than coffee, and the fact that he is English, but it didn’t come in time.

     ‘I can handle the taste of coffee,’ Jack drawls. ‘But sugar might be a good idea.’ The more sugar and caffeine he has, the more chance he has of staying awake, because of et cetera. Too tired to finish that thought, or state it. Jack just has to keep his mind on following Alana to wherever she’s taking him, staying awake, and that thing-

     Crap.

     ‘I think I forgot the idea, Alana.’

Alana:

Alana was AMAZED that even in a state where he was certainly on the verge of being somewhereclose to delirious, he was still able to keep his positive energy. It was something sheIMMEDIATELY admired about him, the first moment they met. Most people were so lifeless nowadays———herself included, so she really appreciated someone who didn’t let the DULLNESS  of life stop them from being positive and eccentric. It INSPIRED her, in a strange way. Especially  strange considering she was the one who typically gave inspiration to others—–given her profession.

She feels BADLY, honestly, but she can’t stop herself from laughing. She’s laughing at howrelateable it was. To an extent anyway. Alana, herself, had days where she did not sleep.CERTAINLY her circumstances were much more on the serious side—————–for nearly a half a year she couldn’t sleep more than 3 hours a night. She was too SCARED to. Now, when she wakes up, it is because she just got in the habit of getting LITTLE sleep and she can’t sleep long anymore. She sighed to herself.

‘ C,mon. ‘ She says. But before, she actually starts to GO so he can follow her, she scrunches her nose and looks up at him. ‘ Do you like coffee? Or maybe tea? Because we’re going to go get some of that. We can’t let that motor wear out. We have to do everything to keep it going. ‘ At that point, she had a strange temptation to ruffle his hair. THANKFULLY for both of them, she was far too short to do that. It definitely saved her some embarrassment.

     When somebody admits to being kept up for days on end for whatever reason - whether that’s excitement, insomnia, or just plain idiocy - most people would tell them to go get some sleep. Alana isn’t most people, as Jack was quickly learning. Maybe she’d been in a similar situation before, hanging onto an idea, or concept, or thought for so long that any disruption could whisk it away never to be seen again, much like a bird escaping his cage.

     ‘Tea - tea is good.’ He can barely think straight now; answering anything longer than a few words might just remove the idea from his head and replace all thoughts with tea tea tea coffee tea sleep.

     ‘Coffee might be better.’ Caffeine. Better for keeping him awake. Jack can stomach it sometimes - this would have to be one of those times.

She frowns. Not because of WHAT he said, necessarily. In fact, the way he said I’m not okay was quite possible the most innocent & adorable way anyone could say such a thing, without REALLY saying it. But it was the fact that she knew what he meant. Jack—–from what little Alana had gathered from him in the short amount of time they had gotten to know each other, she knew that he was the most ENTHUSIASTIC person on the face of the planet. He radiated joy & life. He————much like herself, was probably too stubborn to admit they weren’t okay. Or to even take it seriously.

‘ That’s fair. Sometimes I do that too. I mean, when is there not something inside of us screaming aaaaaa at least once a week? ‘ she’s smiling now. Deciding not to READ into the situation until she had to. Sometimes, she really did wish she could turn off DOCTORBloom. ‘ What’s got you screaming today? ‘ she asks. Nonchalant. Non invasive. Good.

     That’s the thing with most people; there’s always a part of them that’s screaming, controlled by a little meter; at the bottom end of the scale was a small aaaaaaa that’s so distant it may as well be shouted from the bottom of a canyon, heard only barely by those at the very top. Then it climbs the scale, and the internal screaming gets so loud that it forces its way out of the person’s mouth and becomes audible to everybody around. Jack was probably at the stage of aaaaaaaaaaaaa, which is not quite enough to to be of concern to anybody else, but enough that he might just fall from where he was standing and muffle it into whatever flooring was beneath him, probably because he broke his nose on the way down.

     ‘I haven’t slept in two days,’ he replies. The words are slightly slurred through his apparent excitement and sleepiness, but Jack tries his best to keep himself in tact. ‘I might have fallen asleep for half an hour some time this morning but if I did my dream was so realistic that I can’t be sure anymore. I’m on the verge of something, Alana, and it’s too early to say what, but I’m afraid that I’ll lose everything if I let myself give into sleep before I’m done figuring.’
