idk man there’s just something about Eva Stratt holding the literal weight of the world on her shoulders.

Eva Stratt being faced with impossible choices and have to make the best decision she can every time.

Eva Stratt knowing it’s imperative for her to do her job and do it well by viewing humanity as a collective and the only way to do that is holding everyone close to her at a distance.

Eva Stratt knowing everything she does is for the slimmest chance humanity survives and she’ll never be thanked for it. Working herself into the ground to save the world knowing she will be punished for every decision she made.

Eva Stratt sending Grace against both their will because as much as neither of them want it, it’s the right choice, and the world depends on Stratt making the right choices.

Eva Stratt being wracked with guilt over what she had to do for years before she would be able to find out if the longest long shot in history worked.

Eva Stratt being, in her own words, the world’s whipping boy and accepting that as her role as long as it works. Choosing to do everything she could to save humanity anyway knowing they will hate her for it.

Eva Stratt was so desperate to find another substitute for Dubois and Shapiro she had Grace check on the list, even knowing he was the best option.

Eva Stratt disconected from Grace when she realized she had to make a choice.

Eva Stratt gave him 3 hours so he could have a chance to say yes in his own terms, even knowing it was pointless.

Eva Stratt beged him to go, beged him to say yes, a minute before having to make the call.

She didnt had to do all that, she didnt have to look for another scientist, she didnt have to give him 3 hours, she didnt have to ask him (yeah, i know this sound bad, but we are talking about extintion level outcomes).

We are talking about a woman who have been taking ruthless decisions and running everything with an iron fist.

But when it comes to Ryland Grace, she bends, she does all this, so maybe he would accept.

If that is not humanity, if that is not love, I dont know what it is

dont think about how grace is most likely only alive because stratt fought to have every copy written thing ever on the hail mary. dont think about how grace most likely doesnt know the exact chemicals and nutrients to keep a human alive. dont think about stratt insisting that the hail mary needs as much data on board as possible because what if they need it. dont think about how the eridian scientists tasked with keeping grace alive are using data that stratt insured they would have not know how helpful it would be in keeping her friend alive

A woman burdened with the weight of saving the world carries along an exiled scientist at every step, and they almost become friends, which is what condemns him. The loneliest woman on Earth sends a solitary man to his death, and in doing so makes him the loneliest man in the universe. "You have no immediate family; you don't even have a dog," is one way of putting it. Another way is I am the only person in the world who will miss you, and I don't deserve to miss you, and I must accept that.

Near the beginning, Grace asks if he is expendable, and Stratt tells him it would be preferable if he did not die. The irony is that the more important he becomes, the easier it is to sacrifice him when the necessity arises: Eva Stratt has been lonely for so long that she understands that you can sacrifice any semblance of companionship and live with it. And Ryland Grace understands that when you have been alone for so long, you must grasp friendship when you finally find it, and never let go. If he had stayed on Earth, he would never learned that; he would never have had to learn.
