What’s possible in a week? If you dedicated seven days to the achievement of one goal, how ambitious could you make this goal? These were the questions that the multilingual friends Katy and Sara posed themselves when they determined to learn English in one week, to prove that it can be done and anyone can do it with the right methods.
They would attempt to liberate themselves from the distractions and responsibilities of modern-day life in order to cram eight hours of study time and I was observing some of the world’s most capable language learners at work.
The language learning expert: Sara
The friends set themselves the challenge of learning a language in a week in order to stretch themselves, and then it was a question of choosing which language to learn. English presented itself as a natural option; there are nigh on 300,000 English speakers in Germany’s capital, and the areas are dotted with stores adorned with signs in English.
“Truly understanding one’s environment requires one to first understand English”
The first operational step in the friends learning process was to decorate the entire apartment with sticky notes. This had an almost ceremonial touch to it as the friends delved into dictionaries and proceeded to label everything with its corresponding English name.
Within the space of about an hour it was impossible to carry out any menial task, be it making a coffee or flicking off a light switch, without first being presented with at least three different words related to this action.
Sara learning in the park
The importance of the other twin’s presence became immediately apparent as Katy and Sara delegated responsibilities for rooms to decorate with sticky notes. This simple task was augmented by continuous little tests that they would spring on one another, and the fact that they split up their day slightly differently and studied different topics meant that each twin became a source of knowledge for the other.
The most extraordinary moment came towards the end of the week!
The friends simply switched their everyday conversations to English, asking one another if they wanted tea or coffee, were ready to cook dinner or when they were going to leave the house.
Katy and Sara had numerous micro-challenges throughout the week. On the first day they were visited by a English friend who greeted them in English and complimented them on how quickly they’d picked up their first words and phrases.
They then learned the names of fruits and the numbers from one to a billion so that they could visit the English market (although they refrained from purchasing nine hundred thousand kumquats). Displaying their haul after their first functional exchange in English, they beamed with pride and a palpable sense of accomplishment before marching back home to study further.
Katy playing audio lessons
On our second visit to the brother’s apartment 24 hours into the week, we found them sampling dozens of different kinds of English snacks.
Like kids staring at the backs of cereal packs before heading to school, the nutritional information and various special offers and competitions on the packaging were analysed during snack breaks.
There was no moment of complete removal from the language learning process during the eight hours that the friends had allotted to it.
They were constantly using their existing knowledge to support the ever-growing knowledge of English, this being the root of their success.
“you will likely come across words that share common origins with your native tongue”
The friends spent a lot of time engrossed in books or on their computers and apps, flicking and swiping their way through exercises eagerly, but at other times they were to be found searching busily for English radio stations and write-ups of English football games on the web.
There is no definitive method to learn a language fluently
All too often, people enter their weekly language class to converse with their teacher, but then barely have any contact with other speakers and that’s not enough.
The old saying that we can solve problems more effectively when we sleep on it may be especially true if the problem we’re trying to solve is learning a new language.
Motivated Katy out to the library
Researchers from two Swiss universities wanted to know if they could enhance the learning of words from a foreign language by exposing people to the words during non-rapid eye movement sleep the deep, dreamless sleep period that most of us experience during the first few hours of the night.
To find out, they gathered two groups of study participants, all of whom were native German speakers, and gave them a series of Dutch-to-German word pairs to learn at 10 pm. One group was then instructed to get some sleep, while the other group was kept awake. For the next few hours both groups listened to an audio playback of the word pairs they’d already been exposed to and some they hadn’t yet heard.
The researchers then re-gathered both groups at 2 am and gave them a test of the Dutch words to uncover any differences in learning. And indeed there was a difference:
“The group that listened to the words during sleep did better at recalling the words they’d heard”
The simple yet potent trick the researchers employed is known as verbal cueing, and this isn’t the first claim made for its success while sleeping. But what makes this study different is that it puts a finer point on the conditions necessary for this trick to actually work namely, it only works when we’ve already been exposed to the verbal cues before we sleep.
The researchers added a techie dimension by conducting electroencephalographic (EEG)recordings of the sleeping participants brains to track neural electrical activity during the learning period.
They found that learning the foreign words overlapped with the appearance of theta brain waves, an intriguing result since theta is the brain wave state often associated with heightened learning while awake (usually we’re in either the high-frequency, high-alertness alpha or beta states while awake, but it’s thought possible to induce theta state slower in frequency than alpha and beta through concentration techniques).

The Easy Way To Stress Free Weaning
Stress Free Weaning
Most babies that are eating adequate nutritional food in the second year of life feed on average from the breast two to three times a day. Weaning your baby from breastfeeds should be done slowly over a couple of weeks. You can wean abruptly, but this usually results in sore, full, engorged breasts.
If there is a good reason to do it quickly, then it is advised to take medication prescribed by a doctor to help decrease the prolactin levels in your body. That’s the hormone that produces milk. Your breasts will feel full at first. Do breastcare regularly: gentle massage in the shower or bath to ensure a comfortable process. The dose of medication can be repeated if necessary. Within a few days your breasts will feel softer.
However, gentle weaning is really the easiest, less emotional way to go. If baby is feeding during the day, replace it with a healthy snack and offer water. After a few days, replace either the morning or evening breastfeed by offering milk (full cream cows’ milk or a follow-on growth milk) in a training cup before or around the meal times. Your milk supply will decrease with less stimulation and baby should become disinterested at the breast.
Once baby has settled after a couple of days, drop the last feed in the same way. Your breasts will settle within a couple of days, with gentle breast care, and can take up to 40 days to dry up completely.

Miscarriages - 10 Ways To Cut Miscarriage Risk
10 Tips To Cut Miscarriage Risk
Miscarriages are surprisingly common, especially in early pregnancy. A miscarriage can occur for a number of reasons and can be difficult to cope with at any stage of pregnancy.
What is a miscarriage?
It’s the loss of the foetus from the womb before it is able to survive independently. In the US, the baby is seen as viable for life from about 24 weeks gestation. Babies born at this stage require intensive medical care to survive. A miscarriage can either be termed as early (in the irst 12 weeks) or late (after 12 weeks).
What causes miscarriage?
Many miscarriages occur because the foetus has a genetic abnormality. As the baby would not survive due to this abnormality, nature takes its course and the pregnancy is lost usually in the first trimester. In some cases, the mother’s womb is an irregular shape or the cervix may be weak. This means that her body is unable to continue to look after the growing foetus and the pregnancy is lost. These circumstances are often unavoidable, but there are some risk factors that can be avoided in an attempt to reduce the chances of a miscarriage. the chances of a miscarriage.
Before pregnancy
As many miscarriages occur in the irst few weeks of pregnancy, it’s advisable to try to eliminate some risk factors before you even fall pregnant.
1. Get checked out. Before you consider starting a family, have a full check-up. Ask your doctor to run some basic blood tests and have a full medical. This will ensure that you are in the best possible condition before falling pregnant. You may also want to check your rubella (German measles) immunity. Rubella exposure in pregnancy can lead to foetal abnormalities and increase your risk of miscarriage.
2. Get healthy. Start taking care of your body as soon as possible, which includes ditching the booze, increased alcohol consumption in early pregnancy has been linked to miscarriages. Of course, you should also stay clear of any recreational drug use. Some medication should also be avoided in early pregnancy, so tell your doctor or pharmacist that you may be pregnant before taking any over-the-counter or prescription drugs. Eat a well-balanced, nutritious diet that will help you to support the growth of your baby.
3. Stop smoking. Tobacco use in pregnancy is linked to miscarriages. Try to stop smoking before you fall pregnant, as this will improve your health and that of your future child.
4. Attain a healthy weight. Ensure that you are not underweight or overweight as both increase your risk of miscarriage. Ask your healthcare provider to work out your BMI (body mass index), which will tell you what your healthy weight range is.
5. Maternal age. Women over the age of 35 are at a greater risk of miscarriage and will be monitored closely during what is considered to be a high-risk pregnancy.
During pregnancy
1. Regular check-ups. It’s important to ensure that you stick to the scheduled check-ups throughout your pregnancy. This will enable your doctor or midwife to detect any complications early on and implement preventative measures.
2. Take folic acid. Taking a folic acid supplement in the irst trimester will help prevent any neural-tube defects. These abnormalities have been known to increase your risk of miscarriage in the irst trimester.
3. Exercise. Regular, gentle exercise throughout your pregnancy will help to keep you and your growing baby healthy. However, avoid any strenuous activities such as heavy weight lifting. This can put pressure on your cervix, and possibly result in miscarriage.
4. Eat well. Certain foods are considered unsafe to eat during pregnancy. These include raw meat and ish, undercooked eggs and some soft cheeses as they can put you at risk of contracting salmonella or listeria, which are known risk factors for miscarriage.
5. Limit stress. Women who are exposed to high levels of stress at home or at work are at a greater risk of miscarriage. Try to manage your stress levels by taking time out of your daily routine to relax. Whether it’s a long, warm bath or reading a book, you and your growing baby will beneit from some down time.
Recurring Miscarriage
If you have had three or more miscarriages in a row, you should seek the advice of a specialist. Comprehensive screening of the mother as well as genetic screening of the couple is usually done. If a cause is found, it can then be treated. However, it’s important to note that a deinitive cause may not be found.

What's Behind Your Babies Smile
Top Reasons Why Your Babies Smile
Your baby’s smile will melt your heart, but did you know that his grin reveals clues about his development?
There’s nothing more heartwarming than your baby’s gummy grin and new research now shows why you have such a strong emotional response to your baby’s smile and why he smiles at you so much. For the last three years, developmental psychologists have been studying the science of smiles and laughter in children under two years of age. We asked the real experts when it comes to babies their parents, to fill out surveys featuring a range of questions on everything from what age their baby started smiling, to what made them laugh most.
We’ve learnt that smiling and laughing are not just signs of contentment. What babies laugh at, and how they laugh, tracks other cognitive developments. This means that smiles can help us comprehend just how much a baby understands his world.
Smiles In The Womb.
Whether you’re remembering your baby’s first smile or still looking forward to that firework moment when he breaks into his irst beaming grin, you can dismiss the idea that those early smiles are simply facial expressions made in response to wind. “Your baby’s irst smiles are likely to be his earliest natural expression of contentment. “And they may happen far earlier than you think. Third-trimester scans have picked up babies smiling in the womb.” Smiles that genuinely reflect positive emotion are activated involuntarily by the emotional center of the brain and involve the muscles around the cheeks and eyes, as well as the mouth.
The smiles captured in the womb certainly look like the real deal. So the idea that your baby’s first smiles outside the womb are caused by wind is an old wives’ tale. In those early weeks, the only forms of expression available to your baby are crying or smiling and laughter. So think of laughter and smiles as the positive lip side to crying. Just as crying is a signal from your baby to change something he’s not happy with, smiling or laughing encourages you not to change anything and to keep doing what you’re doing.
Smiling Is Contagious
Next time your baby gives you a big grin, try not to smile back. Chances are you’ll find this almost impossible. A 2008 study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that when a mother looks at a picture of her own smiling baby, the areas of her brain associated with reward are activated and the feel-good chemical dopamine is released, giving her a natural high. Babies with sad or neutral faces didn’t provoke the same effect, and neither did photos of other people’s smiling children. This makes your baby’s smile irresistible to you and helps form the mother-baby bond.
When you smile back at your baby and give him eye contact, that’s a rewarding experience for him. “Your attention is everything your baby wants in the early stage of his life, it makes him feel secure and safe. This means your baby will begin to smile in order to get your full attention from early on in his life.” A study by the University of California in the US, has shown that your baby starts grinning at you intentionally before he is four months old, he even times his smiles to make you smile back as much as possible.
He’s smart!
Babies learn about the world around them through interacting with other humans and their smiles ensure that they get as much interaction as possible with others. As your baby grows and develops, he starts to smile as an emotional response to other people. For example, think of the last game of peek-a-boo you played with your little one. “It’s likely that before the age of six months, your baby is smiling because he is actually surprised by your reappearing face. “But when he’s older, and can predict the outcome, his smiles are a sign that he is enjoying the social element of the game. He’s taking delight in your company.
By the age of 10 months, your baby is likely to be able to transfer his smile from an object to a person. So, although he’s not yet able to communicate the sentiment in words, by this age he’s moved beyond a smile that signifies only, “I like this object”, to one that expresses, “I like this object and want to share that enjoyment with you”, indicating a more complicated emotional life and level of comprehension.
As he nears his first birthday, your baby is an expert smiler and will have worked out that smiling can help him get what he wants – yes, he’s mastered the fake” smile. By the age of one, babies have such a sophisticated understanding of the power and meaning of their smiles that they’ll even smile for the camera. Smiling will always play a large part in your child’s life and he’ll smile, on average, 400 times a day. “It may be that your child is more alert and engaged when he is smiling, as studies show that toddlers learn more effectively when they are laughing or smiling than when they are serious. So, smiling is a central component of your baby’s early development. We should all do it more.

New Post has been published on http://momnbabytips.com/6-most-common-unusual-baby-behaviors-baby-hiccups-headbanging/
6 Most Common Unusual Baby Behaviors - Baby Hiccups - Headbanging
6 Unusual Baby Behaviors
Some baby behaviors are unusual and can even be disturbing to watch, but rest assured, most are completely normal and disappear without intervention. Six of the most common unusual behaviors that you might catch They may seem strange to you, but there’s usually a logical explanation for your baby’s quirky traits Unusual baby behaviour your baby may be doing are hiccups, jerky movements, touching their genitals at change time, breath-holding, and erections in boys.
Baby Hiccups
These baby hiccups can start while your baby is still developing in the womb. They are harmless and usually more of a nuisance to you than they are to your little one. Baby hiccups are a spasm of the diaphragm (the muscle that allows lungs to fill and release air) and are generally caused by an irritation or stimulation. Because the diaphragm is located near the digestive tract, hiccups often follow a feed, and hiccups on a full tummy may cause stomach contents to rise up the oesophagus. This regurgitation of milk, known as ‘ baby reflux’, is not usually accompanied with crying so there’s nothing to worry about except the messy clean-up. However, if your baby does have regular hiccups with crying it could be a sign of Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) and should be checked by your child health professional. Hiccups will also be more frequent when bubba is tired so try to keep him well rested. Jerky movements A sudden muscle contraction or lapse in muscle contraction can cause jerky limb movements. They can be a ‘tired sign’, often occurring when your baby is overtired and/ or overstimulated, as the immature newborn nervous system is on high alert. Jerky movements are common with newborns, who startle easily, but will gradually improve as bub grows. Cuddling and swaddling will help, making baby feel calm and secure. ›
Touching genitals
At around four to six months of age, your little one begins to grab anything that’s easy to grip on to because he has more control of his hands and arms. Genitals, ears, feet, and hands are easy bits to grip.Touching genitals at change time is convenient as he’s nappy-free, lying on his back with his genitals exposed. As your baby touches his genitals he often gets a pleasurable sensation but this is not ‘dirty’, ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’, so be calm in your response to this unexpected behavior – it’s acceptable and normal.
Headbanging
Your baby may lie face down on the floor or a bed, raising and lowering his head, thumping his forehead on the floor or firm mattress. An older bub may sit facing a wall, rocking and banging his forehead on the wall. This seemingly strange behaviour is a common habit that often starts at around nine months of age. It may look disturbing but rarely causes your little one harm and is usually gone by the time he turns three. However, if your babies headbanging behaviour is excessive and interrupts a lot of his day, it’s a good idea to discuss it with your child health professional. It’s a rhythmical action that babies find soothing, so you’ll often find him doing it when he’s falling asleep, teething, or suffering painful symptoms suc as an ear infection. In older bubs, headbanging provides comfortin stressful situations or when he is over- or under-stimulated. Headbanging is also often seen with tantrums, when his emotions are difficult for him to control. Although headbanging looks worrying, try not to intervene. Instead, introduce and practise other soothing and comforting alternatives.
Breath-holding
These attacks are a reflex, not a conscious act, and while rightening to watch, are perfectly normal. Breath-holding attacks come in two types: ‘blue’ (cyanotic from lack of breath) and ‘white’ (pallid from a decreased heart rate and blood pressure). The blue breath-holder is the most common and usually occurs when your bub is crying from fright or emotionally upset, whereas the white breath-holder is more from pain. Your baby may pass out (an unconscious state) for 30 to 60 seconds before his body automatically kick-starts his breathing again. It’s scary to watch these breath holding spells and they can happen as early as six months of age and continue until six years of age. It’s more common during the toddler years. For some, breath-holding attacks happen daily and for others, only every now and again. Normally breath holding spells treatment are based on the causes of the breath holding by the child. Some espisodes of the breath holding syndrome are caused by medical conditions such as a seizure disorder, heart arrhythmia, or iron deficiency anemia.
Erections
During an ultrasound, it’s often your baby’s erection that gives away ‘it’s a boy’. At birth, genitals can be swollen due to maternal hormones and pressure caused during birth but this will subside in a few days.Erections are normal, but if your bub’s penis is swollen, reddened, or the erection is prolonged for an hour or two it could be something else so it’s best to have him checked out by your child health professional.
Little boys get erections during REM(Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, in the bath, and during change time.An erection makes babies wee stream difficult to control; it’s all completely normal behavior, but be prepared!

PRINCE HARRY and MEGHAN MARKLE THEIR ‘FAIRY-TALE’ ROMANCE
Prince Harry News – Prince Harry’s Girlfriend Is Rachel From Suits
PRINCE HARRY MAY LIVE IN A PALACE, BUT IT’S one with the everyday comforts of home— including his own kitchen. (Alas, his perks don’t include personal room service.) And on Nov. 10, as Harry left Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace for a public engagement honoring Britain’s fallen soldiers, his girlfriend Meghan Markle made sure he returned to some home cooking.
Watch on youtube
While Prince Harry was at work, the Suits star and self-described foodie, who had been staying with Harry for a few days, shopped for groceries at Whole Foods so the two could share a last lunch before she headed back to her home in Toronto. “It’s an absolute fairy tale for Meghan—she’s head over heels for Harry,”head over heels for Harry,” says a friend of the L.A.-born Northwestern University grad. “She is doing everything she can to make the relationship work. If she had to leave all that she’s doing in order for this to work, she would without hesitation. It’s a very serious relationship. She wants a future with Prince Harry.”
That future already appears to be on the fast track. In the two weeks since news broke that Markle, 35, and Harry, 32, were an item—marking the royal’s first public relationship in two years and the first time he has ever dated an American—the new couple have signaled that their romance is in high gear. (Several friends say the relationship started earlier than late spring as previously reported.) Harry took the unprecedented step of calling Markle his “girlfriend” in a Nov. 8 statement defending her against “the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls.” For her part, Markle has notably dialed down her active Internet presence. “She’s trying to figure out how to scale back what she puts out there about her life,” says the friend, including her social media and her “inspired lifestyle” site the Tig.
Away from the spotlight, it’s clear Markle is quickly gaining acceptance among Harry’s close-knit circle. “They love her and are over the moon for him,” says one pal. As for her nontraditional royal pedigree—her marriage to film producer Trevor Engelson ended in 2013—the pal says Harry’s friends are not bothered. On the contrary, “people were saying, ‘We love that,’” notes the pal. “It’s the modern era, after all.” Markle “is a diehard romantic,” says another friend of hers—something Harry’s buddies say about him. And, like her royal boyfriend, “she’s one of those people that when you talk to her, she’s very inquisitive about you,” adds the friend. “She has a bright spirit about her.”
Now the pair must face the challenges of a long-distance romance. Markle is shooting Suits in Toronto, and Harry—who announced that his 2018 Invictus Games will take place in Sydney—will embark on a two week tour of the Caribbean beginning Nov. 20. But those who know the couple are already thinking ahead. “His friends think he’s getting married next year,” says the pal. “They’re betting about when it will be.”
