A New App That Lets Users’ Friends ‘Virtually Walk Them Home At Night’ Is Exploding In Popularity
Tens of thousands of people around the world are now using a free personal-safety mobile app that allows friends to virtually walk you home at night.
The Companion app, created by five students from the University of Michigan, enables users to request a friend or family member to keep them company virtually and track their journey home via GPS on an online map.
Although they can do so, the friend or family member does not need to have installed the Companion app. The user can send out several requests to different phone contacts in case people are not available to be a companion or not with their phones at the time.
Those contacted then receive an SMS text message with a hyperlink in it that sends them to a web page with an interactive map showing the user walking to their destination. If the user strays off their path, falls, is pushed, starts running, or has their headphones yanked out of their phone, the app detects these changes in movement and asks the user if they’re OK.
If the user is fine, they press a button on the app to confirm within 15 seconds. If they do not press the button, or a real emergency is occurring, the Companion app transforms the user’s phone into a personal alarm system that projects loud noises to scare criminals from the scene, and gives you the option to instantly call the police.

“I know what you think of me. You think I’m just a doll. A doll that’s pink and light. A doll you can arrange anyway you like. You’re wrong. Very wrong.” - Gotham City Sirens
What I love about Joker and Harley’s relationship in suicide squad:
I was a little worried about how they’d approach their relationship and the whole abuse thing. I was afraid they’re gonna include that part of Joker abusing her and present Harley as week, and that’s really the last thing a female character in a blockbuster movie needs right. They did made it all about the controlling game between them. But it was obvious the dependence was mutual. Obviously the Joker was the Dominant one and Harley was the submissive, because those are the roles they like to play in their game. But unlike some of the Joker’s versions in the comics, that would’ve left her to rot in jail or to die, this joker always came back for her. He was protective of her. When that dude called her a bitch, he immediately got filled with rage and soon enough shot him in the head. (Between that there was the part of Harley seducing him and playing with his head which I found pretty sexualizing and unnecessary, bat nah). When they caught Harley and took her to prison, he asked, “Where is she?” in the same furious voice, then immediately started a plan to rescue her from the Suicide Squad. When she jumped to the chemical container (by her choice, he didn’t push her there) they emphasized how he decided to turn around, jump after her and save her. He was as addicted to her as she was to him. Every time she was taken away from him he got mad and upset and couldn’t spend a long time without her. There is a part where the Joker tells Harley ”submission is power”. I read something written by a person who does BDSM explaining about it, he said that in BDSM the submissive person is the person with the real power, because he can say the safety word and he has the power to say if to stop or continue. And I felt like that was her power over him. They didn’t have an actual safety word, but they both knew each other so well they didn’t needed one. No matter to what extent their game got, Joker never wanted Harley to get hurt. (his standards of hurt are extreme, but that’s because he’s insane.) He actually cared about her, in his own twisted way.
F U C K this bullshit !! The Joker did not “care” for Harley. HE was the one who pushed her to help him escape from the asylum, and then BETRAYED HER and strapped her down to a table where he TORTURED and ABUSED her until she went out of her mind. then, once she was “his”, he became completely controlling and manipulative and possessive. him “coming back for her” and “saving” her was not out of love or affection. Harley, to him, is his PROPERTY. he was not about to let her go, and why would he, when he went through so much effort to “create” her into what he desired? Harley is her own fucking person, and her relationship with the Joker is 100% abusive, disgusting, and breeded from hate and evil. I don’t want to see one GOD DAMN post about how he cares for her, even if you’re saying its in some “twisted” way. caring for someone is not TWISTED or an excuse for abuse and trauma.
I never said there wasn’t an abusive element in their relationship, or that it was healthy. I said that it was A LOT LESS abusive than it was in the comics, and that it wasn’t SADISTIC from the side of the Joker.
What I felt watching the movie and the torture part was. That it was horrible and not healthy what so ever. But. that Harley wanted to take part of it. She said, “it’s ok, because I can take it.”. “Are you suggestion that a person in the right of his mind would WANT abuse?? you’re victim blaming FUCK YOU.” No, I’m not. But she’s NOT IN THE RIGHT OF HER MIND. She’s INSANE. She was like that before the Joker Tortured her, He just increased it. And I’m not justifying in any way what he did to her, but… I don’t think it was abusive in the eyes of both of them. I think they saw more of a treatment, a procedure you have to go through in order to get to the mentality and brain functioning of the Joker. Don’t forget she was a psychiatrist who was fascinated by the Joker and his madness. He wanted to make her a part of his world, and she wanted to be introduced to his world and see the things he sees. Is it healthy to want a thing like that? to romanticize madness and suffering? No. BUT THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT SHE DID. BECAUSE SHE’S NOT HEALTHY. AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT MAKES HER SUCH AN INTERESTING CHARACTER. In the eyes of the Joker he was giving her a gift or making her better, and he didn’t care that it hurt for her the same way he didn’t care it hurt for him when he went through similar processes. He doesn’t see pain or suffering as a horrible thing that needs to be stopped at all costs. BECAUSE HE’S INSANE. The same way they were standing in front of the chemical containers, and he offered her a choice, “would you live for me?” would you go through the same process that I went through (that’s his origin story, he fell to a toxic container) to become like me? Do you really want to join me? and she DID. by HER choice.
In this movie (not in the comics, they are different) It felt like his motives are closer to this and they weren’t “you’re in pain. it makes me satisfied to see you suffer. I’m happy.” If she wasn’t so sick that she would’ve been ready to go through torture to open her mind like the Joker, she wouldn’t have fallen in love with him in the first place. And the fact that she was ready to do that, that she understood and sympathized his madness, is what made the Joker fall in love with her instead of just picking a random girl and forcing her to go through it
None of this is healthy. It’s toxic for both of them. I’m not romanticizing it, thinking, “oh, I wish I could find an insane boyfriend and we can go out of our minds together!” I just find it fascinating. BECAUSE THEY’RE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. If they were real people I wouldn’t go, “oh, fascinating, go on.” I’d say, “GO TO THERAPY.”
Their concept of love (and all of their values) is sick and twisted and unhealthy, but it’s their concept of LOVE. It’s not 100% sadistic pleasure from one side and 100% suffering and being abused from the other. It’s not even close. And that’s the plot line I wish they would’ve gone with in the comics.
do you like my cookies? they’re made just for you. a little bit of sugar, but lots of poison, too.
