jack chuckled at her comment, taking notice of the way she brightened at the mention of the young impressionist.
“ yeah, no it’s great! you’ve really got a knack for this, ” he gave her an appreciative nod, hands buried in his pockets as his gaze flicked down the street before settling back on her, “ a lot of people don’t realize it’s not all about just being funny or knowing the right trick. you’ve gotta have that little bit extra — ” he trailed off, producing a coin from one of his pockets, before beginning to twirl it between his fingers.
with a final flourish, he tossed the coin into the air where it vanished before returning to his palm.
whatever pride jack felt at his silly little gimmick in that moment, vanished just as quickly as the coin had, expression falling into a grimace of a smile.
she almost thanked him for the compliment until she got distracted by jack's coin trick. she cringed. she couldn't help it. for someone who was close with magicians, random close up magic never wouldn't startle her just a little. "that was terrible, but i'll forgive it because you were complimenting me." she could excuse it for the compliment.
"the special sauce was what my brother called it. he'd go to my theater shows in high school for a while, and would tell me who he thought had the real sauce and who was just doing it for fun." he'd been a little more judgmental than kaya could afford to be at the time. she had to go to school with them. but then she'd gone to julliard. "when you go to a school like julliard though, everyone has the special sauce and it's a lot harder to keep your confidence up."
she didn't want to make it seem like she couldn't handle the pressure. she knew what it sounded like. "i got used to it, but you know, it can be jarring."
bosco’s face scrunched in anticipation of more scolding, his stomach already achy with the sour pang of disappointing a loved one; the gentle sentiment that followed instead was unexpected, but far more welcome. as kaya’s arms moved to envelop his tense form, his shoulders sagged in relief.
“ i’m glad i’m not in jail too— ” he let out a soft chuckle, one hand snaking upwards to tentatively reciprocate the hug. sure, the mood had shifted, the words “proud” and “glad” floating atop the previously heavy air, but a few brief sentences and a hug weren’t enough to untangle all of bosco’s complicated feelings.
“ you know, things are gonna get a lot more confusing real soon, ” he wasn’t sure how much she’d already learned, potentially from june or charlie, and he was hesitant to divulge any more, but he needed her to be aware.
the eye could always be watching.
“ — and i don’t entirely know what to do about it. but i’m really glad you’re here. ”
she wanted to rest her head on his shoulder, but she didn't, instead she "i bet you are," she chuckled as they pulled apart. even as she moved she stayed close. she didn't know where exactly they stood, but she was pretty sure that they were still okay enough that she didn't have to put two and a half feet of distance between them when what she wanted to do deep down was keep bosco close so he couldn't just disappear again.
she hadn't been able to ask june and charlie much, they weren't' being cagey exactly. they'd texted, but they hadn't talked in person yet. kaya wasn't sure whether that was on purpose or if they were just exhausted. if they were, she wouldn't judge them for that.
"they are?" kaya asked skeptically. it sounded like bosco didn't even know what he meant by confusing. something was coming and he wasn't keeping it from her, he genuinely didn't know what it was. that worried her more than the actual outcome of whatever it was. "wow, well, we'll figure it out. you just have to keep me in the loop." that was really what she wanted all along, to be included. "do i get to be in the loop this time?"
the only reason jack had stepped outside before the actual conclusion of the show had been because of a careless mistake and a massive oversight on his part. the brim of his baseball cap remained low as he listened from the bar, but he hadn’t done much else to help further his disguise—- it was bound to happen.
he was practically asking for it.
the moment after he locked eyes with a duo of young women, whispers started to spread amongst the group and he knew he’d been had.
holy shit i think that’s jack wi—
he was gone before they’d even finished saying his name. the last thing he wanted to do was draw attention from the young woman performing, especially after such a glowing review from bosco - and piqued interest from a certain secret organization of magicians.
but she’d noticed. of course she had; and he’d lingered around afterwards — like a total creeper.
she was not wrong.
“ it was just, uh —- a bit stuffy in there. had to get some air, that’s all, ” he shrugged, his smile polite but apologetic— a bit of a grimace, really.
quickly realizing he hadn’t actually answered her question, he backtracked, “ bosco— bosco leroy. he told me you had a show tonight. thought i’d come check it out. you were pretty great up there, honestly. f— from what i saw. ”
it wasn't the first time someone had walked out of one of her shows. hell, it wasn't even the first time someone famous walked out of one of her shows. michaeI shannon had walked into a bar and walked out while she was performing once. it would have been a great moment for crowd work if she hadn't been mortified. she wasn't quite as mortified when jack wilder walked out. just a little peeved.
"yeah, it was definitely stuffy. the only real working vent is right over the stage. it's freezing up there." even with the lights and the initial nerves, she'd still rather be cold than perform in her winter coat. she'd give him that, human heat had a way of making rooms impossible to be in.
kaya smiled brightly when jack mentioned that bosco had been the one to recommend her show. "he did?" that certainly made her less frosty towards the man. "thank you, i really appreciate it. i'm really proud of the new material i've been working on. i think the uh- the horrors are really making people ready for my kind of humor."

LAURA STOOD UP AND TOOK THE DECK OF CARDS FROM KAYA. ❝ You think you're so much better than me, don't you ? ❞ she teased, winking as they traded places. She had watched Kaya do the trick several times, now it was her turn. This was going to be simple right? Little kids could do card tricks. It starts off with a spring, where the entire deck is tossed from one hand to the other. She held the deck in her left hand, positing cards just as she was shown. She handed it off to her right hand, gripping the cards tight so they curved upwards. When scrunched up her face, focusing as she did, the cards flew from one hand to the other.
Only they didn't. The cards flew all around her and ended up mostly on the floor. ❝ Okay, ❞ she conceded, ❝ you are better than me. ❞
"i never said so much better than you." it had taken kaya forever to figure out cardistry and she still could barely be considered as having figured it out. when you compared her skills to any actual magician's, she was basically only qualified to perform for children...or apparently teach laura.
she watched as laura went into the trick with full confidence and then sprayed cards all over the room. she appreciated the effort through. "it takes some figuring out, you're really doing great." she knelt down to help pick up all the cards that had just scattered around the living room. she'd watched them go under her coffee table and even a few of them go underneath her couch. she'd done that plenty of times an there was no hack to picking up dropped cards, you just had to keep doing it. "when we get all these picked up, i want you to hold my hand and half the deck so i can feel how much pressure you're putting on the cards."
bosco held his breath for a moment, cheeks puffed in awkward hesitation before kaya finished her — frankly warranted - response and he finally let out an audible exhale.
“ technically i probably still could be. at least for, you know, grand theft…formula one car… and i guess — other stuff. ”
fraud, identity theft, evading arrest. god, the list went on.
he gave a pained grin, more akin to a grimace, as he waited for another verbal blow, but continued digging himself into what was bound to be a deeper and deeper hole, “ if it makes you feel any better, charlie’s got some scarily good lawyers. ”
it did actually make her feel better to know charlie had good lawyers, but it also didn't make it alright. plenty of people had good lawyers, better lawyers even. she wasn't mad he didn't think to call. kaya didn't expect him to. she wasn't sure what she was mad about, but it was easier being mad than dealing with whatever other messy feelings bosco being both an international celebrity and an internationally wanted criminal brought up.
"other stuff, jesus." she mumbled. she didn't want to think about how hard those lawyers would have to work for them and their new friends if they actually got caught. she took a deep breath, she'd gotten out what she had to to feel like she'd made her point. there was no use yelling at him for the sake of it.
there was one more thing she had to say. "i'm really, really proud of you guys." kaya stepped forward and pulled bosco into a tight hug, standing on her toes so she could whisper in his ear. "and i'm really glad you're not in jail."
"thank you for coming, i hope you had fun." kaya pulled her coat around herself and then stopped when she saw someone across the street seemingly staring right at her. she glanced both ways and when she saw no traffic was going to come out of nowhere and crush her, kaya darted into the street and crossed. as soon as her feet touched the opposite sidewalk addressed the man. "i know who you are. you don't have to be such a creeper." she put her hands in her pockets, partially to warm them against the cold air and partially to shield the purse that hung off of one shoulder. "i don't know if you're here for me or just lurking like that for a ride or something, but i saw you leave the show." she hadn't known it was him as he was leaving, but she recognized that it had been now that she was closer. "what's your deal?"
"did you even think about how arrested you could have gotten?...been?" honestly she didn't care if the sentence made a whole lot of sense. he'd get her point. she never had a problem with what he did, wealth redistribution or whatever they called it wasn't her problem, but normally they were dealing with the american justice system. "i mean abu dhabi? the uae is like the home of human rights violations. you all could've gotten arrested there, or by interpol! the uae doesn't extradite back to the us. did you know that?" she looked away from bosco for a moment, trying to pull herself together. it was hard to pretend like she hadn't been crazy worried as soon as she saw warrants out for their arrests.
oh, no, where'd i go ? a wannabe actress turned stand up comedian that my occasionally dabble in crime with her friends. an 18+ now you see me original character as loved by nico ... NOW YOU SEE ME, NOW YOU DON'T.
