Hello !! Slightly longer post than you probably wanted but I love this show a lot and this specific hc is important to me 💔

So I have a heart condition (not being non-specific on purpose, they just dont know what's wrong with me). This causes me to black out a LOT. When this started, I was just starting high-school, and I had to quit basically everything. I quit performing, I quit theatre, anything that involved standing for too long or getting too hot or anything that would make me fall. With no actual assistance available, my only option turned into isolation.

Ikuya's medical episodes are a big part of his character, but I never liked how it sort of implied that his condition basically would go away because of the power of friendship or whatever. Sometimes things are going to be hard and your condition is going to get in the way and his character hits a lot harder for me if he keeps going ANYWAY.

Give me Ikuya who needs to take several weeks off after a race that pushed just a little too far. Ikuya who has to have his heart rate and blood pressure checked between events to make sure he won't pass out.

Better yet, Ikuya who blacks out during non-swimming activities. Walking around town, shopping, COOKING AND ACCIDENTALLY STANDING TOO CLOSE TO THE HEAT. It isn't just something that manifests when he gets in the water, it's going to affect other parts of his life. Very simple things become difficult under certain circumstances.

And I think those close to him KNEW that this was an issue. Natsuya isn't going to put Hiyori up to years (tbf very creepy) borderline babysitting for some one time incident that had no underlying cause.

I liked what they did with Haruka's hiatus post FS, but Ikuya's condition was clearly a recurring thing and I wish it was used more.

The only sad part about what it would be like if Aki had been a main character in Free! is that she wouldn’t have a Samezuka rival bc it’s an all-boys school ;-;

But also imagine the joint practices? The first time the Samezuka boys are all flustered about swimming with/against a girl and Seijuurou is just like damn y’all get ur shit together and show her some respect, just bc she’s a girl doesn’t mean she can’t beat ur ass in a race (bc obviously he’s thinking of Isuzu). Aki would probably feel a little awkward at first too but once she gets to know how silly and goofy the Samezuka boys are they all have a good time! They would probably end up worshipping her as their swimming queen lmaooo (cue Rin getting protective of her the same way he does with Gou). Imagine some of them attending the girls’ part of the tournaments to cheer her on omg

Was anyone else really surprised that Nagisa decided to go into the pro swimming world? It really didn’t seem like something he would do tbh, but maybe that’s just me lol

​I think it worked for Rei bc of his arc in dttf but not really for Nagisa. In dttf I got the sense from Nagisa that he wasn’t going to continue swimming after high school just from the way that he spoke about things. It felt like the end of the road for his competitive swimming days. In The Final Stroke it seemed as if they didn’t wanna go through the trouble of figuring out what Nagisa Rei and Gou would do after high school, so they gave Gou something really vague and just made Rei and Nagisa continue swimming. I’m like I get it, TFS had too much going on for them to give too much time to the Iwatobi Trio but MAN.

AND ANOTHER THING-

you’re gonna tell me that Nagisa not only chose to go into professional swimming, but that that decision didn’t cause any problems for him with his parents? If you’re gonna give me pro swimmer Nagisa you have to show me the absolute turmoil that he must have went through to get there in the first place. Because there’s no way it wasn’t a difficult decision for him! The only reason his parents allowed him to continue swimming in Eternal Summer is bc he promised to study and get his grades up. They wanted him to get a good paying job in the future and the life of a pro athlete is only profitable if you’re the best of the best, which is never guaranteed. Did he get scouted in their third year? How did he react? I feel like he would’ve been conflicted. He told Haru in ES that he wants to travel the world, which is the same reason Haru chose to go into pro swimming, so I can see that being the logic behind Nagisa doing the same thing. But even then I don’t think Nagisa sees himself as someone capable of competing at the world level. It’s not something that we ever see or hear him talk about. His way of swimming was always a little bit more casual. He gives his all for his teammates and his competitors, but that’s where his motivations seem to end. So what led him to get more serious about swimming?
