healthcare

            My first thought after watching the movie “Sicko” was that it is unfair for some people to have to live in fear due to the fact that they can’t get sick because they can’t afford any healthcare. It’s sad that hardworking lower middle class families can’t afford the outrageous healthcare costs for basic operations and routine checkups. But at the same time it should be remember that the movie was made 7 years ago, things may have changed and I also believe that healthcare should be universal and free but I don’t see this being reality because nothing in this world is truly free. If healthcare becomes free taxes on middle age families will skyrocket because the government needs more money to spend on fixing and buying machines necessary for doctors and nurses to do their job. As the law states now, if someone goes into a hospital and their life is in immediate danger from an injury or illness, they cannot be turned away no matter what their financial situation is.

the perfect image is all anyone wants to gain, in today's society that means skinny. the skinnier the better. the supermodels you see today appear to be close to 100 pounds, making average teenage girls think that being that skinny and unhealthy is the only way they will look good to society. in Susie Orbachs article "fat is a feminist issue"  she seems to blame men for the societal pressure on women. men face the same image problems, the male models advertise that the perfect man has very low body fat percentage, and very muscular. i also disagree when she states that it is a social disease, i think people being fat comes directly from them overeating or just being lazy.

is capitalism racist?

when talking about racism and stereotypes, mentioning gender, race, and ethnicity it is impossible not to mention the job market available to minorities. in the article "is capitalism gendered and racialized?" Joan Acker believes that capitalism is racialized and gendered, i disagree with her because there are numerous laws in place to make sure that minorities are hired such as affirmative action. in the article she mentions that there are many more white business owners than minorities. i believe this to be true due to the fact that minorities only recently gained rights. 100 years ago, only white men could own companies. because of this there are still many more white CEO s because only recently, minorities had the opportunity to own companies.
