For her (relatively) low-key civil wedding ceremony on 18 April 1956, Grace Kelly wore this drop-dead gorgeous suit of beige-tan lace over ashes-of-roses taffeta. It was designed by the two-time Academy Award winner Helen Rose, who had just dressed the bride for her star turn in the MGM movie musical High Society, released three months after her marriage to Prince Rainier. A masterpiece of subtlety that’s as deceptively simple as it is demure, the ensemble is defined by precisely that quality of elegance without pomposity that is, to my mind, the hallmark of American fashion at its very best, and of the fashions of this most unashamedly feminine period in particular.
