I Hate Response Videos. by the1janitor
This week’s video is late, but it’s here! So as many of you probably now “Response Videos” are really common on YouTube, particularly within the political/social space. People on all sides of the debate use them.
Personally though, I kind of hate response videos, I just think they are a pretty terrible way to frame a discussion and cause more harm and confusion than good.
Agreed. One thing that I would add to your list is that it targets people rather than ideas. I don’t like how these people who make response videos often claim that they are super rational when the more rational video format would be to talk about ideas and not make it about the one person who expressed those ideas. It would also fix this problem of dog piling and harassment if they just resorted to that instead. But I really think that the response creators care more about entertaining their audience at the expense of someone who expressed an idea they don’t like than they actually care about being super rational. If they can find the time to drop everything and make 30+ minute responses to a feminist but they can’t spend even two minutes saying “cyberbullying is wrong and isn’t what a rational discussion looks like” then I can’t help thinking that they don’t care if people they disagree with get bullied off the internet.
Its also lazy, because its basically stealing and regurgitating content in this "anti" form; secondly its vulture like because they know it'll get views from the original creators subscribers thus earning revenue. Notice "response" video youtubers never target someone with a small audience.
