Bleed Me Dry Masterlist
summary: Edward leaving threw a wrench into your life. Even in his absence, he sticks around. Navigating all of that on top of yours & Bella’s feelings leaves you discouraged and stumped—that is until an unexpected variable is added to the mix, alleviating some of the weight.
word count: 3.5k
cw: descriptions of depression, not eating/under-eating, injury, injury aid, migraine issues, pills (migraine medication), and emotional distress.
a/n: well hello, it’s been a while. sorry about that, i was feeling like bella in the months sequence scene, but we’re doing better now and we’re sooooo back. i want to again draw attention to the fact that this is following the events and timeline of the film series, so please note this is going to be a slower romance fic. in order to really connect the reader to bella as a sister, there will be scenes with her as well as scenes with other characters in general, not exclusively jacob…but this is the start of the new moon movie so we'll be seeing him often as the chapters go on:) this is more than just a jacob fic, this is intended to be a complete insert of reader into the twilight universe. if that's something you're interested in and you want to stick around, here are some romance tropes that will be incorporated here: enemies to acquaintances to lovers, lots of angst, and concepts of a forbidden romance. and as always, no use of y/n:)
October. It went by in the blink of an eye. Charlie gave candy away to the kids that knocked on the door while you sat in the kitchen, mind only being able to focus on the fact that Bella was upstairs, practically rotting away. It scared you, how far gone she seemed. The holidays were some of your favorite times of year, of course, but what made them so special to you was family. Bella. Truth be told, your holidays haven’t been too cheerful since the day she left with Renée. You were hoping that when she came back things would change. And they are, just not in the way you’d hoped.
—
November. Bella didn’t eat much, she snacked on the old Halloween candy Charlie never got out to the kids or the trash—but at least she was eating something. Again, you found yourself sitting at the kitchen table, only this time with Charlie across from you, poking at his peas like they personally offended him. ‘Save some for your sister,’ he’d said, but you didn’t imagine her ever getting around to it. And you were right. You threw the food out a week later.
—
December. You hated yourself for thinking it, but a part of you began to resent Bella. She let this one boy (vampire), who she barely knew, derail her life. Christmas morning was a wreck. It wasn’t excitement for opening gifts that shot you awake bright and early, no—it was Bella having another nightmare. She had stayed in her room the whole day, never getting around to opening her gifts. Charlie ended up unwrapping them for her a few days later, leaving it to you to put them in her room. It was only you who she even bat an eye at, so he thought it best.
—
Going back to school felt like such a drag. You had to wake up earlier than you ever had before just to make sure Bella actually managed to get out of bed, and then you’d drive her to and from school. The dynamics had shifted, and suddenly you felt like the older sister. Growing up, you admired Bella simply for being older, if not anything else. You always found yourself pouting, wanting to be like her—to be older, more mature. Now, you have it. Just in some fucked up way. You would’ve never wasted your childhood birthday candles on such a wish if you knew this is how it would’ve panned out. But here you were, outside, standing beside the truck as Charlie tried to find the will inside of him to stand his ground with her for once.
“You’re going to Jacksonville to live with your mother.”
Your heart sank. Even though having her here had turned out to be more negative than it was positive, she was still here. Besides, if she were to go back to Florida, you wouldn’t be able to make sure she was taking care of herself. Renée wasn’t a good mother, it was as simple as that.
Shaking your head, you found the will inside of you to stand your ground easily, as you often had. “No, she’s staying here.”
Charlie said your name, sighing. “Being here isn’t good for her-”
“I’m not leaving Forks.”
You and Charlie both looked at her then, eyes all sunken in—tired and frail.
“Bells, he’s not coming back.”
She didn’t react. It seemed you and Charlie constantly reminding her of that fact finally took its toll, sinking into her skin in a way she couldn’t sweat out. “I know.”
You’d tuned out their conversation until Bella said she was going shopping with Jessica tomorrow.
Charlie’s brows furrowed. “You hate shopping.”
She inhaled, thinking for a moment. “I need a girls' night out.”
Was she serious? You were here this whole time, her sister, and she wanted a girls’ night out with someone she barely saw outside of school? Someone who barely checked on her?
“Alright.” Charlie nodded. “Girls’ night.”
You couldn’t contain it, you were bitter. “Yeah, you have fun with that.” You huffed, walking away. Her life had taken over yours and she didn’t even think to invite you? Or to have a separate night with you? Has she thought of you at all? If she had, she sure had a funny way of showing it. Neglect is one hell of a thing, enough to make you shell up like she has been doing for the past couple of months.
—
“What the hell, seriously?” You scowled at Bella. Not only was she doing stupid shit when you weren’t around (such as riding a random perv’s motorcycle), but here she was, dragging you to Jacob’s so she could get her adrenaline hit when he fixed the motorcycles. You just wanted to go to the café, not any of this extra shit, and especially not with him around.
“I saw Edward.”
“What?” You jerked to the side, looking at her as she drove.
“Not literally. Just this…shadow, apparition thing.”
So now she was going clinically insane?
“I know you think I’m crazy-”
“Bella, I don’t think you’re crazy, I know it.” It was rude, but your patience had worn thin back in November. You didn’t believe you had it in you to dance around what you were really thinking anymore—to spare her already fragile feelings.
“Thanks.” She said sarcastically, letting out a small breath before licking her lips as she pulled into Jacob’s place—parking and getting out. “Just play nice, okay? I need this. Then we can head to Carver’s.”
“Whatever.” You grumbled, hopping out of the truck just as Jacob ran up to her, picking her up and spinning her around. The sight made you want to gag.
“I see you brought company.” His smile relaxed into indifference as he looked at you.
“Don’t worry, I don’t want me here, either.” You flashed a sardonic smile, walking away like you knew where you were going. You didn’t, but in the few breaths of air you inhaled and the sights you took in as you began to walk around, you found yourself enamored with the environment. You hadn’t messed around in any forestry—you stuck close to, well…your house, school, and the café. That was about it.
There was something especially earth-like here at Jacob’s that soothed your growing migraine, as if the cool air were an ice pack that penetrated further than the dermis. You took a deep breath, letting the air fill your lungs as you turned back around to face Bella and Jacob where they stood, talking. That’s when you saw Jacob handle the bikes like they weighed the same as a packed cooler on a hot July day rather than what they really were—bikes. Instead of being irked by the sight, you found yourself intrigued. So intrigued, in fact, that you didn’t incinerate Bella with just a look alone when she bargained with you. Her offer was that if you came with her every time she went to Jacob’s, she’d take you to Carver Café afterwards. Her reasoning? It’d ensure the two of you spent more time together. When you argued and said it was really only more time with Jacob, she said it’d save gas—she wouldn’t have to drive to Jacob’s, then back home to pick you up, and then to the café before finally heading home. That was logic you couldn’t refute. It was either Jacob’s and then the café, or no café at all. Unless you went with Charlie, of course, but he was often busy with police work and on top of that, you didn’t have much to talk about with him. Your conversations turned into his concern for Bella, one way or another. So, fine. You’d suck it up, spend time around Jacob.
—
You’d been dealing with it, seeing him almost every day. But it’s in moments like these that you debated ditching your cravings for the café, saying ‘fuck it’ and staying home instead of listening to them bicker about their age in a way you found to be roundabout flirting. Hearing Bella talk about her maturity level and influence annoyed you. If anything, you were more mature than she was. Looking at the shit she got herself into, you’d argue that’s a fair point to make. You wished you thought she was right, though, because for once in a blue moon, you actually found yourself agreeing with what Jacob said. Yuck.
The sounds of knocking disrupted their conversation, thankfully. Jacob stood up, handling the little meet and greet. “Hey. Guys, this is Bella. Bella, that’s Quil and Embry.”
“I’m Quil Ateara.” Quil said to Bella.
“And who’s that?” Embry asked, nodding towards you.
Jacob didn’t even look at you as he responded. “That’s Bella’s little sister.”
Your jaw clenched. “I have a name, you know.”
Only then did he look at you. “So say it.”
What a dick. You took a breath, reeling in your anger for the sake of Bella (yet again) as you said your name to the boys. They gave you a look before returning their attention to Bella.
“So, the bike building story is true.” Quil broke the silence.
“Oh, yeah, yeah, I taught him everything he knows.” Bella attempted humor, but it fell flat.
“What about the part where you’re his girlfriend?” Quil continued, not blushing at the topic in the slightest.
You cringed, visibly. The thought of them together made you feel all different types of things, things you haven’t even begun to admit to yourself yet—and you were not going to start any time soon.
Bella looked uncomfortable. “Uh…We’re friends, you know.”
“Ooh, burn.” Embry laughed with Quil.
“Actually,” Jacob began to speak, hesitating slightly. “Remember I said she’s a girl and a friend.”
“Embry, do you remember him making that distinction?”
Embry shook his head. “Nope. He didn’t even mention her,” he pointed at you, absentmindedly, “Leaving her out certainly made things sound a lot more intimate than it actually is. Is she usually here?”
“Every time I come.” Bella nodded, shifting awkwardly.
“I’m gonna go, though. I, uh…forgot something in the truck.” You lied, squeezing past everyone to leave.
“See you later, Bella’s little sister.” Quil grinned.
You put up your middle finger, waving it goodbye as you exited. Was this worth the food?
You’d made it halfway to the truck when Jacob came running after you.
“Hey.” He called out. You ignored him.
He tossed his hands. “Really? Silent treatment?”
“What, like you treat me any differently on a daily basis?”
He caught up, fast. “Look, I don’t want us to have any issues-”
“I’m not mad, Jesus, I said I left something in the truck.”
“Yeah?” He crossed his arms. “Like what? Mind sharing with the class?”
Okay, so you lied. But what the hell does he know? “I’m not lying.”
“Yeah, you are.”
As you squinted, he added onto his assessment. “You do this weird thing with your shoulders when you’re fibbing. You, like…” He rolled his shoulders forward in a dramatic hunch. “You practically curl in on yourself, like you’re trying to shelter the lie. But it doesn’t work, I see right through it.”
You walked over to the passenger side of the truck, opening the door, knowing there was nothing to be found. “You don’t know me.”
“I’ve seen enough of you these past couple of weeks.”
“Don’t know how, it’s not like you ever pay me mind.” God, what were you saying?
He held the door open as you leaned inside, digging for absolutely nothing. “Forgive me for being focused on repairing bikes from a junkyard.”
“I’m not talking about the bikes.”
He was quiet for a moment. “If this is about B-”
“You know it’s about Bella.” You grit, turning around to face him. There he stood, one arm slung over the top of the truck door while the other one was tucked away in his front pocket as he damn near boxed you in. “She doesn’t need more boy drama. I don’t need more boy drama.”
“It’s not like that.”
“Your ‘boys’ in there sure seemed to think so, and they weren’t even around to see half the shit I’ve seen, to hear half the shit I’ve heard. Romance is the last thing she needs right now.”
He cocked his head to the side, peering into the truck. “Can I safely assume you didn’t find what you ‘forgot in the truck’ because there was nothing forgotten in the first place?”
You sighed. “I wish I forgot my migraine meds in here.”
“You get migraines?”
“Yeah. Even worse when I’m around you.”
“Funny.” He deadpanned. “If I get you some migraine meds to ‘forget’ here all the time, can we be cordial? Call it a truce, just when you’re here? Romance may not be good for Bella, I agree, but she really wants these bikes. I can do that for her. But she won’t come, not without you. That one day you stayed home, slammed with studying, she didn’t stop by even though she had no studying to do. No homework, nothing. But you couldn’t come, so she didn’t either.”
You thought for a moment, leaving him to sit in the silence that fell between the two of you. Through seeing Jacob more, she became herself more, which awakened more consideration for you. It made up for her hanging out with Jessica and doing stupid shit without thinking of you at all that one day. “Okay. You get me some shitty migraine medication to leave here for the days I forget to take some and to bring some with me, I’ll keep coming with her.”
“Deal?” He backed away as you stepped forward.
You shut the door, not breaking eye contact. “Deal. Only if this is for the bikes, though. Nothing else. I won’t winggirl you with my own sister.”
“You got it.”
—
“You’re coming to the movies with me tonight.”
You groaned, rolling over from your nap to see Bella standing in your doorway. “What?”
“The movies, you’re coming with me.”
“What movie?” You asked as you sat up.
“Face Punch. It was originally supposed to be me, Mike, Jessica, Angela, and Eric, but of course those plans fell apart. So now it’s going to be me, you, Mike, and Jacob.”
“Ew. I don’t want to spend the rest of my night around two guys. I barely even know Mike.” It had been a little bit since you last saw Jacob. The bikes were fixed, there was no reason for you to go there anymore. You couldn’t pin just how you felt about it. So, Mike was the easy excuse.
“I’ll be there.”
Running a hand over your face and then over your hair, you relented. “What time?”
“Thirty minutes.”
You groaned even more dramatically than you had initially. “I don’t even know if I’ll be awake and alert in thirty minutes.”
“I want you there.”
You stood up, lazily walking over to your closet, searching through it with tired arms. “I’m going, I’m going. Ugh, what’s the dress code?” You asked yourself more than anyone else as you leaned over, looking at what Bella was wearing. “Casual. Okay.”
“Maybe a little less than thirty minutes, actually, if we count the time it takes to get to the theater-”
“I’m moving as quick as my brain can possibly allow me to, okay?”
—
Twenty minutes later, you were sitting in the theater as your head began to ache. The seating arrangement wasn’t exactly discussed, and since the previews were already going, you rushed to sit down, which landed the seating as follows; Mike, Bella, Jacob, and then you. You, who had a man who chewed very loud and let his elbows invade your personal space sat on the other side of you.
“Hey, you wanna switch seats?”
You felt goosebumps raise in the wake of Jacob’s whisper. “Uh, no, it’s okay.”
That’s what you said anyway, but in all actuality, the man’s chewing began to reverberate through your skull alongside the sounds of gunfire in the movie, pushing the ache quicker.
“You have a migraine, don’t you?”
“I’m fine, Jacob.”
He moved around in his seat, digging in his pocket before pulling out a folded ziplock bag that had two small pills inside of it. “Here.”
“What, do you just walk around with pills in your pocket?”
“Yours, yeah. We had a deal, remember?”
“That deal kind of died the second the bikes were ready to go, don’t you think?”
“Yeah, well, I had spares and I figured you’d be coming, so I brought some just in case. That alright with you?”
You looked at him and then the pills before taking the bag from him. “Weirdly helpful.” You muttered, swallowing them down, courtesy of your slushie.
“Okay, I-I think I’m gonna throw up.”
You, Bella, and Jacob all watched as Mike rose up and hightailed out.
“Okay, we should…” You trailed off.
“Yeah.” Bella agreed, leading the three of you out of the room.
“What a marshmallow.” Jacob chuckled. “You should hold out for someone with a stronger stomach.”
You shot him a glance as he spoke to Bella. Your whole deal with him that even allowed him to consistently see her in the first place was that there was to be no weird romance or winggirl shit going on. Seemed like he was implying ‘someone’ as himself.
“Yeah, I’ll keep my eye open for that.”
Okay, so it wasn’t winggirl, it was straight up third wheeling. There you were, straggling off behind them as they basically flirted. It only got worse as Jacob grabbed Bella’s hand, which she pulled away. Sadistically, you had to admit the sight brought you some joy.
“What? I can’t hold your hand?”
He was moody sometimes, but it was noticeably worse tonight. What was his deal?
“No, of course you can. I just think it, you know, means something a little different to you, so…”
“Okay, well, tell me something. You like me, right?”
Your eyes darted to Bella’s face, to see her reaction. Was there something brewing that you’d missed, beyond the times he was playing mechanic on the bikes? Something more mutual than you originally perceived?
Bella nodded. Holy shit, she actually nodded.
“And you think I’m sort of beautiful?” Jacob continued to ask.
“Sorry, what? When did she say this?”
He looked between the two of you, taking Bella’s silence as his thumbs up to take on the elaborating. “When I was teaching her how to ride the bike, she crashed. Hit her head.”
“Okay, I know that part. I gave her some of my meds when she got home. What else?”
“She was bleeding, so I took my shirt off and pressed it to her wound. That’s when she said it.”
“That you’re ‘sort of beautiful’?”
“Yeah.”
You then looked at Bella, who avoided all eye contact with you as she kept her gaze glued to him.
“Jacob, please, don’t do this.” She pleaded quietly, sitting down on the stairs.
“Why?”
“Because you’re about to ruin everything. And…I need you.”
Now you felt sick, just like Mike.
“Well, I’ve got loads of time. I’m not gonna give up.”
You sighed as you watched him sit down beside her. He had managed to gain a little bit of your respect, to not irritate you so deeply just by name alone. You should’ve known that all could’ve been unraveled in a mere couple of sentences. “Are you guys serious right now?’
Bella said your name in the same pleading tone.
“No. Jacob, we had a deal, remember?” You shot his own words back at him.
His jaw clenched. “Yeah, I do. But there are some things you just can’t help.”
There was a feeling that settled in your stomach, like a feather slowly dancing until it plummets into the corrosive acid. This wasn’t just about Bella, was it? Were you jealous? Nope, nuh-uh, no, that cannot happen.
“Well…” Mike’s voice made you jump, appearing out of nowhere. “I need to go home.”
You glanced between the three of them, tensions obvious.
“I’m…I was feeling sick before the movie, okay?” Mike continued to defend himself. “What is your problem?”
“Right now? You’re my problem. Feeling sick? Maybe you need to go to the hospital.” Jacob stood up then. “You want me to put you in the hospital?”
Swallowing your pride and whatever else was obstructing your ability to speak, you said his name. “Calm down, please.”
“Jake! Jake, Jake, the movie’s over. What’re you doing?”
You felt your migraine intensify with the situation, meds not kicking in fast enough.
“You’re…really hot.” Bella noted aloud, having physically held him back. Even from where you stood, you swore you could feel the heat radiating off of him. “Like, you feel like you have a fever. Are you okay?’
Jacob softened, ever so slightly. “I don’t know what’s happening.” He heaved. “I gotta go.”
He brushed past you, feeling like a human radiator. The heat made your head throb, your heart pumping blood at a quicker rate that distributed pressure all throughout your skull.
“That dude is weird.”
You shot a look at Mike who cowered under the supervision. “You’re one to talk.”
Why were you defending him? He broke your deal and just threatened to put Mike in the hospital. None of this made sense, but you were stubborn.
You’d make it make sense.

Today was September 13th, Bella’s birthday. Normally, she looked at it as any other day. You should’ve known, though, that with the existence of her vampire boyfriend that she’d think of it as a day closer to death, to wrinkles and gray hairs.
“Hey, um…” She began, as if she could read your mind, tucking her lip between her teeth briefly. “Do I look much older? Y’know…wrinkles or, or gray hairs?”
You glanced over at her as she drove, her body tense.
“No, Bella, you’re young.” You respond, voice very monotone as if you’d been having this conversation for a while. Maybe that’s because you have been having this conversation for a while. Like, in the mornings before school, at lunch, at dinner, and at night before you depart for bed. Nearly every other day since she was attacked, she’d wondered if the stress of it all aged her. And then she began to stress as her birthday got closer, so on and so forth. Truthfully? You were surprised she didn’t get a gray hair from the stress.
“I’m sorry, I’m just-“
“Paranoid? I’m well aware.” You cut her off. “Look, just try your best to enjoy today, Bella. It’s a privilege to be alive.”
She shifted uncomfortably at your statement, as if the thought of her body working to keep her here was disturbing to her.
“Yeah. Yeah, you’re right.”
It was brief, arriving to school. Bella took a picture of you in the passengers seat just before you got out, lowering her camera as she got out the truck and approached her friends. You couldn’t help but cringe when nobody said happy birthday. It’s not like Bella told them, but still. It hurt you for her. You fought every urge to tell them, because it is normal to have a birthday, it’s normal for your friends to wish you a happy birthday. But, you knew it would upset Bella so you resisted. Not without an eye roll, of course, as she took a picture of her friends. She should be the one photographed, you thought.
Then, like clockwork, Edward began to approach.
Clearing your throat lowly to snap Bella out of her trance, you spoke.
“I’m gonna go. Happy birthday.”
She nodded, offering a thin-lipped smile.
“Thanks.”
You eyed him as you walked off, you didn’t care that he could both see and hear how you felt. He deserved it.
He earned a few, only a few, brownie points with you ever since Bella’s attack. And he earned another just now as you heard him wish Bella a happy birthday, reminding her it is something to celebrate. How sad is it, you thought, that you were celebrating the small feat of a vampire wishing your sister happy birthday? Had it been a mere human like the rest of us, you’d of thought nothing of it. Because that’s a very basic thing to do.
Suddenly, that brownie point was taken just as soon as it was given.
“Bella!”
You came to a hasty halt at the sound of his voice.
“Jacob!” Bella said his name happily and your stomach churned. You couldn’t place how you felt about him, not one bit. You barely saw him, only when he wanted to be there for Bella, so why was it he had this effect over you? It was entirely annoying and inconvenient. You placed yourself behind a car in the lot, eavesdropping.
“Hello biceps.” Bella noted, and you couldn’t fight the urge to peer through the cars windows to see him. She wasn’t wrong.
“Well, I’m just filling out, Bella. Y’know, it wouldn’t seem so drastic if we hung out more.”
There it was, that notable burn in your chest. Annoyance, you believed. How smug he was.
“What’re you doing?” Edward asked you quietly. You jumped, looking over at him.
“What’re you doing?”
“Waiting for Bella.”
“Okay, so go wait over there or something.” You huffed.
“I was, but your thoughts are astoundingly louder than anyone else’s.”
“Anyone else’s, huh? Like Jacob’s?”
“You’re not funny.” Edward said with an expressionless face.
“Admit it, you want to eavesdrop on his thoughts.”
“If you admit you’re trying to eavesdrop on his conversation, I’ll admit I’m eavesdropping on his thoughts.” He leaned in, “Though your thoughts are enough proof for me.”
“Your goal is to get me to like you, is it not? You’re doing a severely poor job.”
Edward smirked ever so slightly. He wouldn’t admit it to you, but your defiant nature grew on him, no longer as annoying of a trait.
“Maybe some other time we can work together. Today’s clearly not that day.” His voice was calm, and you could tell he knew something. He didn’t voice it, but he heard Jacob’s thoughts, and now his focus was completely on what Jacob was gifting to Bella. You followed Edward’s gaze and you eyed the cute little dreamcatcher he gifted her. As if he could feel the staring, Jacob’s eyes darted to the car you two were behind. Edward rolled his eyes, hearing Jacob’s very judgmental curiosities about what he was doing behind a car. Jacob didn’t notice you yet.
“What’re you up to?” Jacob’s voice rang out what he was thinking.
Edward doesn’t move, but you push on his shoulder gently. He was freezing, which you knew of, but it didn’t fail to shock your skin every time. He takes a few steps from behind the car, but not without gently dragging you with him.
“Oh.” That’s all Jacob had managed. You felt shyness and irritation both creeping up your spine, and in that moment you wished so deeply that you had the abilities Edward does. What was he thinking?
“We were just talking about Bella, birthday things.”
You looked up at Edward, feeling slightly grateful, which he heard and gave a small, small, microscopic smile to.
“Uh-huh.” Jacob didn’t look convinced. He crossed his arms, which were big, not that you really cared, and adjusted his posture. “And you had to do that behind a car?”
Bella, who was standing there silently during this interaction, piped up. “Please don’t tell me there’s a surprise. I hate surprises.”
You went to speak, to comfort your sister, but Edward shot you a sideways glance, one that didn’t need words to get its point across: go along with it.
Jacob shot a glare before turning to Bella, saying his goodbyes. “Look, I gotta go, but, good seeing you.”
Edward took the opportunity to speak to you, quietly.
“Bella’s having a little get-together tonight, at my house. Alice insisted. My family will be there, and I think it would be nice if you were there too. For us to all properly meet. Not for us, but for her.”
“It sure as hell won’t be for any of you.” You scowled, walking away just as Jacob began to leave as well. He had a knack for ignoring your presence and it pissed you off, thoroughly. As always.
But, this is how things were now. Vampire companions and all, whether you liked it or not. And boy, did you not like it, but you had bigger things to focus on today, like being a piece of meat wandering into a lions den. Sure, Bella insisted they don’t consume human blood, but you didn’t trust it. You sworn yourself to protect Bella, and you were just as thirsty for protecting her as they were for her blood.

“But it’s my job to protect you,” Edward began, “…from everyone except our sisters.”
You came into the room, all chipper, alongside Alice. What could you say? She was friendly, far more personable than Edward.
“Wow…” Bella said your name in a hushed tone, “You’re like…here. Here, here.” She smiled, a sense of hope that the feud between you and her boyfriend would at least be in the beginning stages of dying out.
“I am.” You said, disbelief etching into your vocal cords. You knew you planned to come, you just hadn’t expected to be so calm about it.
The scene clearly stumped Edward, seeing you wear a genuine smile around a vampire even though you deemed them monsters. It was only when Alice exchanged a glance with Edward that it clicked for him…Jasper did some emotional-tweaking. Although, he did not completely change how you felt, not at all. Just made you a little more…lax, all things considered. Dismantling the walls you had up wasn’t going to do any harm, surely.
As you, Edward, Alice, and Bella made your way downstairs where everyone else was, you felt your chipper demeanor fade away more and more. Your eyes darted to Jasper, whom you knew had some kind of mood-controlling abilities. He offered a small smile which was supposed to be reassuring but came off as smug to you. You swallowed, eyeing the people—vampires— around you. If you were playing a game of matching, you’d have to place yourself alongside Rosalie, who seemed to dislike this whole ordeal just as much as you did. Part of you felt a respect for that, a sense of unspoken familiarity.
You stood in between Bella and Alice, the family forming some sort of huddle for gift giving. You glanced at Bella, knowing she wouldn’t enjoy all this attention, only to see her have a sense of warmth and comfort about her. As if it felt like home here, as if she were safe. You found yourself pondering if she was right in her trust, or just plain stupid. As memories of Bella’s attack plague your mind, you realize just how powerless you are in all of this. How powerless both of you were, against all of them. Your mind flickers to the woman you’ve never seen before but knew of, Victoria, and her potential vampire friends. At any moment, they could all attack, wipe you right off the face of the Earth.
“It’s a necklace. Alice picked it out.” Rosalie’s voice snapped you from your thoughts and you were honestly grateful, though the distraction didn’t last long. It was right then that you wished Jasper was doing his thing, but he wasn’t. You stood amongst them as Alice handed Bella gifts, your mind very far away from this room, from your body. Your thoughts swarmed you like angry bees, the metaphorical buzz enveloping you in a haze. They must’ve been just as overwhelming for Edward as they were for you, because he cleared his throat.
“Ow-“ Bella hissed, “Paper cut.”
It happened in the blink of an eye. You rushed over to Bella who was on the ground, bleeding from her arm, her gaze fixed on Jasper. You quickly stood, glaring at all of them, scaring at the speed Carlisle appeared next to you. He gave you and Bella an apologetic look and you slightly relaxed. There was something about Carlisle that made you feel like you could trust him, but you diminished the worth in that to the fact he’s a vampire. He’s supposed to have that allure, to catch prey. That’s all you and Bella were, right? Edward was just playing the long game.
“That’s not what’s happening.” His voice was firm.
“Get the hell out of my head.” You spat back, voice just as firm.
“I couldn’t have known this would happen.”
“And Alice couldn’t either? Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t she the one who can see the future?”
He huffed, nostrils flaring for a moment. He was angry, very angry, as well as disappointed.
“I’d of opened it for her had I been able to notice she was struggling. But you and your thoughts-“
“Enough, Edward.” Carlisle interjected, quickly turning his attention back to Bella. “Come, I’ll stitch this up in my office.” He was the voice of calm and reason in the intense moment.
He stood, body nearly hovering over Bella. “Perhaps you should accompany us, yes?”
You looked to him, then back at Edward.
“Yeah. Best I don’t stay here and distract him with my thoughts of truth and reason.” You respond to Carlisle, although your words are targeted at Edward.
Carlisle winces slightly, now speaking to him.
“Check on Jasper. I’m sure he’s very upset with himself and I doubt he’ll listen to anyone but you right now.”
Edward’s gaze was glued to Bella’s wound, and you couldn’t make out if he felt sorry or hungry.
“Edward.” Carlisle urged.
—
“I never wanted to have a party.” Bella huffed.
“Anyone who knows you could’ve told them that.” You responded, still shaking slightly from anxiety and anger. “No offense.” You add, glancing at Carlisle who quickly gained your respect. His restraint was admirable.
“None taken.” He assured you. “And it’s not your fault.” He says to Bella. “Jasper hasn’t been away from human blood as long as the rest of us.”
“How do you do it?” Bella asks.
“Great question, actually. How do you do it?” You question him as well and he smiles slightly, “Years and years of practice.”
He spoke with a soothing tone that made you shake a bit less. You began to accept that this wasn’t his vampiric nature, it was simply him. If it were a vampire thing, Edward and the others would’ve had the same effect on you and you knew for a fact they didn’t.
Bella continued to ask him questions and you listened closely to him as he answered them.
“I knew who I wanted to be. I wanted to help people. Brings me happiness, even if I am damned regardless.”
You hadn’t considered the aftermath of an existence like that. You hadn’t thought much about the aftermath of living a human life, either. You did your best to stay focused on the here and the now, but that was obviously derailed the moment Bella got back and met Edward.
“Damned? Like Hell?”
For a moment you wondered if Bella could read your mind. She kept asking the same questions you had.
Carlisle gave her a look, answering without word.
“Carlisle, you couldn’t be damned. You couldn’t, it’s impossible.”
“Thank you, Bella. You’ve always been very…gracious about us.”
It was then you felt your first drop of guilt towards how viscously you declared them to be inhumane, monsters. If you ever did come around about your feelings regarding them, they’d have Carlisle to thank.
“So that’s it? That’s why he won’t change me?”
“Bella.” You cut in. “No. Can we not? I mean, look at you. Look what happened.”
Carlisle waited a few beats of your heart to answer. “Imagine the situation in reverse. If you believed as Edward does, could you take away his soul?”
That struck you in the deepest parts of your subconscious. As much as you didn’t like the fact Edward was a vampire, you couldn’t help but notice his personality. All of their personalities. They were all very individual, except for three shared characteristics: vampirism, bloodlust, and ‘veganism’. Part of you knew that, that they weren’t all the same, and that’s partially why you didn’t want to meet them all. It’s easier to fight against their existence, to hate them, if it’s all from a distance. Getting close means you learn about them, even the parts you didn’t give much thought to—their life before their death. Tonight was odd, it showed you two sides of the very same coin. The miraculous and the ordinary, the good and the bad. You felt your migraine growing, surprised it hadn’t done so sooner.
—
Edward pulled the truck up to your house, parking. He was quiet the entire time, even more so than usual.
“You can’t protect me from everything. At some point, something’s going to separate us. It’s gonna be an accident, or illness…or old age. As long as I’m human. And the only solution is to change me.” Bella spoke from the middle seat. You glanced between her and Edward from the passengers seat.
“Can I go? I don’t want to be here for this. My head is killing me.” You groaned.
“Stay, just for a moment. Help her see our perspective.” Edward spoke, not glancing up from the steering wheel.
“Our perspective?”
“Changing her, that’s not a solution. It’s a tragedy.”
You let out a breath, leaning back. Yeah, it was a shared perspective.
“You’re not gonna want me when I look like a grandmother.”
Edward got out of the truck, walking to the passengers side, opening the door and offering you his hand.
Normally, you wouldn’t have taken it. But right now? You sort of needed it. You were slightly dizzy.
You did not linger for a second once your feet touched the ground, slowly making your way to the front door, leaving them to talk.
Only when you were inside did Edward continue to speak. “Bella, do you not understand my feelings for you at all?”
“Carlisle told me… how you feel about your soul. I don’t believe that, so don’t worry about mine.”
“You should go inside. Check on your sister.” He spoke softly. “Then go rest.”
—
Two subtle knocks on your door rang in your skull, painfully.
“I’m coming in.” Bella called softly, entering your room.
“Please don’t turn the lights on.” You muttered, voice sounding pathetic.
“I know.” She whispered, not coming near you.
“I shouldn’t have let you go.” You continued, even though the vibrations of your voice reverberated, intensifying the sharp ache in your skull.
“This isn’t on you,” Bella said your name with a sorrowful tone. She was beginning to realize just how much this impacted you. Your body had a habit of giving you headaches, but never this persistent and never this intense. She noticed it getting worse, of course she did, but she didn’t know how to help without hurting herself in the process.
“Happy birthday, Bella, but I really need to be left alone right now.”
She didn’t say a word, opting to leave as quietly as possible, leaving a note on the kitchen table for Charlie to see, stating to be cautious of being loud and bothering you. She’d take on your chores, it’s the very least she could do.
In your room, you stayed put. You wanted it all to stop, so very badly. The pain in your head was too much to bear, and the hot tears that draped across the bridge of your nose and down your cheek as you laid on your side did not help. You writhed in the ache silently, somehow fading into sleep in the midst of it all. The pattern typically continued for a couple of days: you in your room, in fluctuating pain. Awake, agony, asleep. Charlie wouldn’t even consider asking if you were going to school. If you weren’t already up and about, he knew what was going on. So, all you had to worry about right now was relieving yourself as much as possible. Constantly thinking of how you wish it all to stop, to just go away.
—
“Get up, kid.” Charlie shakes you. “I hate to do this, but I need you up and with me.”
Your eyes fluttered open to the sunlight through your curtains, your body flinching at the sight. You only ease awake fully when you realize there’s no migraine pains anymore.
“What’s up?” You sit against your headboard, slowly. Just because it was gone for now doesn’t mean it wouldn’t come back.
“Bella’s missing.”
Forget being slow. You immediately jump out of bed, walking through the house.
“How do you know she’s missing and not just with Edward?”
“I’ve called the Cullens’ place a million times. Nobody’s answered.”
Your mind races, thinking of the worst scenarios, that they killed her, drained her dry. But you didn’t see that happening, not with how harshly they fought to keep Jasper away from Bella when she was hurt. If they wanted to do it, they had the chance and if you were collateral, you’d assume they’d take you too.
You’d went over every possibility so many times as the hours went on. You stood outside next to Charlie and the others who had came to help look for Bella, a slight shiver being your only movement. You were scared that if you moved, Bella would somehow end up further away than wherever she was right now.
“I’m gonna try the Cullens’ place again.”
“The Cullens left town, Charlie.” Billy informed not only Charlie, but you. Your blood ran cold.
“Where’d they go?” Charlie asked Harry, hoping for once she actually was with Edward.
“We’ll find her, Charlie.”
At the feeling of eyes on you, you turn and meet eyes with Jacob.
“You’re clearly cold so go inside and get a jacket.”
You squinted at him, your brows furrowing. “I’m fine, bigger things to worry about right now.”
“Being cold doesn’t help anything or anybody.”
“Neither does being warm.” You shoot back immediately.
He rolls his eyes, but sympathy ultimately prevails. He shrugs off jacket, going to drape it over you, and he’s successful for a mere two seconds before you shrug it off with a glare. You hated to admit it, but in that two seconds, his scent engulfed you—something woody, hearty, mixed with the smell of oil and metallics. You could picture it now, him working on his bike in this jacket. The smell told a story, one that you didn’t have time to think about.
“I don’t need anything from you besides help in finding my damn sister, Jacob.”
His jaw clenches before his attention is whisked away to the forest behind him, spotting Sam with Bella in his arms.
“Charlie.” Jacob grabbed his attention.
Charlie didn’t waste a second, sprinting for her while you collapsed to your knees, a small cry escaping you, a release of every single emotion you wouldn’t allow yourself to feel until you knew she was okay. Charlie and you both felt the same relief, of course, but your fears were slightly different in some parts, with the whole vampires are real thing.
Jacob spared one glance at you before he followed Charlie to Bella and Sam.
Billy stayed beside you, leaning forward to place a consoling hand on your shoulder.
You stayed like that for what felt like forever yet not long enough before you were finally inside, sitting on the edge of Bella’s bed while she laid there, nearly emotionless.
“Can you please tell me why you were sleeping in the woods?”
“He left.” She began, “He left and he didn’t want me to come with him.”
You knew exactly what she meant, and guilt washed over you. Had you wished for everything to go back to normal too much? Sure, you were glad the vampire part of things was slightly out of the picture for now, but you didn’t realize just how much it would impact her. Then, it hit you like a ton of bricks. It played in your head over and over again, you, in a hospital room in Arizona, telling Edward he should leave. You swallowed the guilt down, trying to focus on the pact you made with yourself that night rather than everything else. The determination that you’d keep her safe.
You still had to protect her, only this time it wasn’t from supernatural beings.
It was from herself.

a/n: hey guys, so sorry this took me so long to publish. hope you forgive me LMFAOOO because guess what? this chapter concludes the first film. now, we get to the good stuff…New Moon stuff. meaning, you guessed it, more Jacob. i want to again draw attention to the fact that this is following the events and timeline of the film series, so please note this is going to be a slower romance fic. this is more than just a jacob fic, this is intended to be a complete insert of reader into the twilight universe. if that’s something you’re interested in and you want to stick around, here are some romance tropes that will be incorporated here: enemies to acquaintances to lovers, lots of angst, and concepts of a forbidden romance. and as always, no use of y/n:)
You heard rapid footsteps approaching your room and for a moment, you were worried it was Charlie delivering bad news again.
“I confronted him.”
Your face scrunched up in confusion, shooting a small glance over your shoulder as you continued to sort the scattered papers on your table.
“Bella, I thought you said to forget about the whole ‘did I smell bad?’ thing.”
“Not about that.”
You turned to face her so fast that you nearly tripped on air. “I’m sorry?”
“Wait, listen-“
“Uh, no. Absolutely not, no thanks. Are you insane, Bella?”
She walked over to you, a look in her eyes that you only saw when she was deeply inspired. When she felt awake.
“It all makes sense. All of it. His skin even sparkled in the sun.”
You were worried. She had officially lost it. “Bella…body glitter isn’t unheard of. I quite literally-“ You went to grab your body puff, wanting to further prove your argument but Bella grabbed your forearm and spat your name back at you, urgency in her every move and word. “No, listen to me. Please.”
Reluctantly, you sat down on your bed. “I’ll humor you. But that’s all this is, humoring.”
“What Jacob told me, it connects to them.”
That, unfortunately, gripped your attention. So tightly, actually, that you felt like you were going to burst.
“Them… as in?”
“Edward. His family. The ‘cold ones’. It all makes sense.”
“His family?”
It didn’t make sense, not at first. But Bella spent nearly an hour presenting the information to you as if her life depended on it. And honestly, by the end, you realized it sort of did.
Standing up, you turned to her.
“Let’s just say this is true-“
“It is.”
“Humoring your little fantasy, why the hell would you want to be with someone—No, something like that?”
Bella looked offended, as if you’d just slapped her. “Edward’s not a thing, he’s a person.”
“Really? Could’ve sworn you just bet your entire life on him being a vampire.”
She huffed your name, her eyes blinking rapidly as she tried to form a rebuttal.
“Y’know, now that I think about it,” You stormed out of your room, heading straight for hers. She called your name from behind you, following like a moth to a flame. You were stubborn, logical. She knew whatever you were going to point out was going to be difficult to refute.
Stepping into her room with a brief pause, you spot them. The book, her computer. If you were lucky, her browser history would be right there for you to feast on like a rabid dog. You opened her computer with such force that you could’ve broken it had you been a touch tougher.
“I really don’t-“ She tried to speak, but you were fast. Or, she was just sloppy with her research, didn’t cover her tracks. Either way, you were ahead of her. Your eyes skimmed the webpage with speed and precision.
“This one most recent website details how these creatures are enchanting, charming. Meant to lure in their prey.” You grabbed her computer, shoving it at her. “Prey. That’s all you are to him. Bella, he’s a-“
“Everything alright in here?” Charlie pressed his forearm against Bella’s doorframe, caution and curiosity written all over his expression.
Bella froze, like a deer in headlights.
At least some parts of her were still intact.
“We’re fine.” You answered, taking Bella’s computer from her and shutting it, holding it against your chest like some nervous schoolgirl on her first day.
“Didn’t sound like it, now it doesn’t look like it.” Charlie may have never been one to hover, but he knew his girls. His eyes studied you both. “What’s going on?”
“Nothi-“
“Just Jacob being a douche.”
Why was that what you came up with? Who you came up with? Why was he even on your mind right now? You just learned about the potential, emphasis on potential, existence of vampires and you’re thinking about him. Subconsciously, but still.
“I really wish you wouldn’t talk like that.” Charlie began, “But…” He paused, like he didn’t want to know what can of worms he was going to open by entertaining this.
“What did he do, exactly?”
“A couple days ago, at La Push, he ignored me completely. As if I wasn’t there.”
You wanted to slap yourself. Out of all the times to let out this rant about one little thing—person—that was bothering you, you chose now. Or rather, your mind and body did. Bella seemed to have had the same thought, her brows furrowing subtly as she processed what you said. Though she couldn’t and wouldn’t complain. You easily could’ve spilled all the conversation you and her just had, but you didn’t…and that made Bella’s heartbeat relax a tad. If you didn’t rat her out, there must’ve been a chance that a sliver of you believed anything she said, no matter how small that sliver might be. She took it for what it was.
“I told her I’d talk to him about it. It’s fine.”
Charlie looked at her now. “You? Playing mediator…for your sister…with Jake…Am I hearing that correctly?”
“I know it sounds unusual but I’m more familiar with Jacob. We’re closer, that’s all.”
“Well, alright then. As long as you two aren’t at each other’s necks.” Charlie shifted on his feet, eyeing you both and exiting the room.
You let out a huff once you could no longer hear his footsteps. “You’re insane. That’s all there is to it.”
“Jacob really bother you that much?”
You sighed, deeply. “We aren’t talking about me or that ass right now. We’re talking about you and your fantasy boyfriend.”
“He’s not a fantasy…” She spoke, her lower lip tucking in. “He’s real. So, very real. I…I think I’m in love with him.”
“I cannot believe you thought that it was okay to bring that up to him. Let’s say he’s not mentally ill and deluded, that’s he’s actually…” You leaned in, whispering, “one of those things…Bella, you just confronted a vampire about his existence. He could’ve killed you. And you somehow love him now?”
“He wouldn’t. He wouldn’t hurt me, let alone kill me.”
Your jaw went slightly agape. “Are you genuinely out of your fucking mind? You’ve known him for-“
Your hands waved in the air, trying to find the right words, “-for a blink of an eye. You don’t know him. And let’s say you did, all you know is that he is a monster. He eats people, Isabella.”
She blinked, meeting your eyes. “He said they do, but I don’t believe it. There’s something…more to it. To him.”
“You’re unbelievable. Sure, you two can role-play, but if he hurts you, Bella, I swear-“
“He won’t. He won’t. He had the chance already, and he didn’t. That counts for something.”
Your expression crumpled at her words.
“One, you keep repeating yourself. Who are you trying to convince here? Two, he said he was a killer. How much more blunt do you need him to get? Do you need him to…to kill you, for you to get it through your thick skull?”
“I told you.” She said your name softly, not showing anger at your words, “I told you. I easily could’ve kept this to myself, and honestly, right now, I’m thinking I should have. But I wanted you to know. I needed to tell somebody, this is unimaginable.”
“Well at least you got one thing right. It is unimaginable.” You brushed past her, “Don’t be dumb, I can’t deal with having a dead sister. You just got back.”
That was the last thing Bella heard before you left her room. She sank onto the edge of her bed, her heart racing. This was a thrill, this knowledge to her like her blood to him—a drug. She needed to know more, to be closer, and she was determined to get there, whether you liked it or not. She simply couldn’t stop herself.
—
It was over the course of a few days that Bella came home, filling you in on the new information Edward told her. You didn’t have it in you to fight her on it again, you merely smile and nodded. She was clearly struggling, and she just needed someone to listen. You did that, and you anticipated doing it again when you heard her get home. You had to drive yourself to school now, with Bella’s truck, because she kept hitching a ride with Edward. All of the time. You assumed that’s how she got home even though you didn’t use the truck today.
It angered you, how quickly she fled to something else, to someone else. You thought you were over it, but something about it pressed on your memories of her leaving to live with Renée and it ached like an old bruise. When you heard her enter the house, you focused on the dishes, continuing to scrub.
“Hey.” She spoke quietly from the kitchen archway.
“Hi.” Your tone was curt, you kept it short.
“I learned something pretty important.”
You took a deep breath and Bella watched as your back rose and fell.
“Go on.” You reluctantly urged.
“Him, his family, they don’t eat humans—or drink their blood, I mean. And it was other vampires that killed Waylon, not them. They’re against that. Um,” She paused, thinking. “and some vampires have powers, essentially. They can’t read minds like he can, but Alice-“
“Enough.” You dropped the sponge into the sink, turning to face her. “I can’t entertain this anymore. At. All.”
“He also just told me he wants me to meet his family.”
You stared at her, expressionless. Nothing she said could’ve surprised you anymore at this point.
“Does he know I know all of this? That you’re saying it?”
She nodded. “Yeah, he didn’t really want me to tell you at first, but I assured him that we could trust you.”
You let out a bitter laugh, shaking your head. “It’s ‘we’ now, is it? What ever happened to us?” You walked away from her, heading for your room. You’d rather listen to Charlie moan and groan about the dishes not being done than listen to her nonsense any longer.
She called after you. “I also wanted to tell you that Jake’s here. With Billy, to watch the game with Dad. They’re about to head in.”
You groaned, loudly. Your temples thudded harder and harder with your heartbeat as it increased, making your chronic migraines pay you a little visit. Again.
“I don’t care. Everyone just leave me alone.”
You lied through your teeth, ditching her voice behind the door of your bedroom. You felt a heat rise through your chest. There was something about him being just below you that made you feel slightly dizzy, like you were spinning. Maybe it’s the anger mixing with your migraine.
You let your head rest against your door, listening to their murmurs, distant and muffled. Then, you focused in on his voice.
“I’m sorry about my dad. I wasn’t begging to see you, not like he made it seem. You’re just…cool to be around.”
You immediately yanked your head from the door, rolling your eyes. You highly doubted he was talking to Charlie.
—
You sat inside Carver Café across from Charlie, watching Bella talk to that meathead Mike. Your eyes followed her through the window as she made her way inside.
“Hey, sorry I’m late. Biology project.”
You rolled your eyes at her. You could picture it now, her learning more about Edward, all doll-eyed and unafraid. It was foolish.
Your attention was then drawn to the waitress as she set everyone’s food down on the table: Bella’s spinach salad, Charlie’s steak, and you your usual.
Bella spoke up, gesturing to her salad. “You should order one for yourself next time. Cut back on the steak.”
You immediately glared at her. “What’s your issue?”
She only pursed her lips awkwardly, looking down at her salad.
Charlie, noting the tension, tried to make a joke out of it. “Hey, I’m as healthy as a horse.”
You began to eat, half of your focus on your food and half on the conversation happening. Your heart dropped when you heard Charlie say they found a human footprint. You and Bella looked at each other at the same time. You were one hundred percent bothering her about this later.
Your gaze shifted behind her, to the meathead. He was dancing just outside the window, making noises that made your head ache. You were zoned out, your ears perking as Charlie asked if Bella had interest in anybody. You let out a scoff-laugh, and Charlie’s brow cocked.
“What?”
“Nothing.” You said. “Nothing at all.”
“Is it Billy’s boy?” He asked Bella.
“Jake? No.” She answered, a little too fast. That only increased Charlie’s suspicions.
“What about you, huh?” He tried to make small talk with you, and you hated it. You hated small talk. “Jake?”
“God, no. Why is everyone talking about him all of the time? He’s the least interesting person I have ever met.”
You watched as they exchanged a look, that set you over the edge.
“I’m gonna walk home or something.” You stood abruptly, “Bring my food home?”
Charlie nodded, watching you leave. You made it a few feet away before you heard Bella coming after you.
“What is your problem? You have this permanent scowl lately.”
You snapped your neck in her direction, turning to her. “Are you that naïve? Wait, actually, I know you are. You’re rolling around with some creature while said creature attacks our home, our people. You know, the human race.”
She snatched your arm, dragging you away from anyone close by. “Can you keep it down?” She whisper-shouted at you.
“Can they keep it down? Stop causing terror around here?”
“It’s not him.”
“And how do you know, Bella? What makes you so sure?”
“I trust him.”
“Yeah, and you’re dumber for it.”
She flinched. “Seriously, it’s not him.”
You tongued the inside of your cheek, letting out a hum. “You wanna know something? I actually am starting to believe the things you’ve told me. Charlie’s finding evidence of it, too convenient. And if what you’ve told me about Edward is true, he should absolutely and completely be dedicated to making sure you’re safe. He knows what’s out there. I don’t know how the vampire community works, but something tells me he should know who’s doing this.”
She listened as you spoke, taking it into consideration herself.
“Talk to your little boyfriend. Get him to stop whoever’s doing this, or it could you next. Or me, or Charlie.”
Bella winced. “Don’t say that.”
“Don’t say what? The truth?” You crossed your arms. “Listen, if he actually puts effort into protecting you and the people you love, I might actually care to meet him. Whatever’s happening, I want to be a part of it. I don’t trust anyone to get it all done. I want to be there to help tie any loose ends.”
She nodded, slowly. “I’ll bring it up to him.”
“Yeah, or I will. I won’t even have to speak, he’ll read my mind.”
Bella’s head turned to the sound of a bell, seeing Charlie exit the diner and waving for her to come. When your feet stayed planted whilst Bella went to him, his lips pursed, disappointed. Not in you, but in the circumstances. He had no idea what had gotten into either of his girls and it broke his heart day by day to see your relationship grow strained. He’d figured Bella moving back would’ve been a great thing for the both of you, but whatever was happening now? Not good at all.
—
You sat in the kitchen with Charlie while he glossed up on his gun. Today was the day you’d meet Edward, officially. Well, kind of. He’d hear your thoughts.
You watched as Bella broke the news to Charlie, how he reacted. A small smirk tugged at the corner of your lips as he set his gun up, urging Bella to bring him in.
“Could you be nice? He’s…important.”
You rolled your eyes as subtly as possible as Bella’s declaration. He’s a vampire. It was beyond you why she treated him like a God, let alone wanting others to do so as well.
You rose as Edward entered, his focused on Charlie. Your thoughts were severely loud to Edward. In all his years, you actually might take the cake for the loudest. By now you’d think he would have mastered the art of tuning one out, but not with you. You and your sister were something entirely new. One whose mind is radio silent and one whose mind is constant chatter. He knew how you felt, Bella told him. But your thoughts now? They spoke for themselves. It honestly made him crack a grin. It was endearing, how opposite you were to Bella.
Your brows scrunched together as Edward said they’d be playing baseball. Baseball? Seriously? Bella, love her to death, but she’s one of the most unathletic people you’ve ever met in your entire life. She had to of trusted him a lot to feel comfortable even trying to play, not only in his presence but his entire family. You fully anticipated getting the entire description of every event in great detail once she got home.
Though it was not at all what you expected. Doors slamming, heavy footsteps, Charlie’s pleas. You rushed out of your room, going right to Bella. She pushed past you after she gave you a look, one that you could only infer meant something wrong happened. But not regular wrong, rather vampire business wrong. Your heart sunk. And it kept sinking as she slammed her bedroom door. You stood behind Charlie as he tried to get her to come out, but you couldn’t take the anticipation anymore. You needed to know if it was his fault. Edward’s fault. You rushed downstairs, then to the front door, exiting your home. You stood on the steps, sensing that someone was out there. You couldn’t decode why, but you felt like it wasn’t Edward. You flinched as Bella slammed the door behind you. Looking back, your heart broke as you saw the look on Charlie’s face.
“Where the hell are you going?” You grabbed her wrist tightly.
“Let go.” She murmured firmly at you.
“You have to call me. You have to tell me what’s going on. Please, Bella.”
“Just…” She struggled to find words, “Can you fake cry? Right now?”
Your face fell, both irritated and concerned. She was serious.
“Yeah. As long as you call me.”
She gave you a look, a silent agreement, and then it began. The waterworks. In that moment, you swore you could hear Charlie’s heart break as he saw your face. But he needed someone else to focus on more at the moment.

You got a call, but it wasn’t from Bella. Your mind was absolutely spinning. Everything happened far too fast. Here you sat, in a hospital room in Arizona with your sister lying in the bed. Here you sat, staring daggers into the man you blamed. Edward Cullen.
Everything has gone haywire since he came around, and you loathed him for it. He knows it. Your obsessive thoughts about how this is his fault plagued your mind, and you knew he could hear it. It was then, for the first time ever, that you were grateful he was vampire. The only thing of use is how you were able to ensure he knows how you feel without verbalizing it.
Reneé left the room and both you and Edward immediately stood up, exchanging a glance.
“We took care of it.” Edward reassured Bella, his voice all diplomatic.
“Took care of it?” You snapped at him. He avoided your gaze, clearly ashamed.
“My sister nearly died because of you.”
Bella’s expression coiled up, “No, stop. This isn’t his fault. If anything, it’s mine. I chose this.”
Edward was about to tell her it wasn’t her fault, but you beat him to it.
“No, it’s not. You didn’t choose this. You might think you did, but you didn’t. He-“ You hiked a thumb at him, “is supposed to be all-alluring to you. Addictive. And he is. That’s like you thinking you chose something bad happening to you because you made a poor decision when drunk.”
Edward shifted awkwardly, clearing his throat. “She’s right, Bella.”
At the same exact time, “What?” rang from you and Bella.
He sat down beside her bed, a solemn expression. “Bella, you gotta go to Jacksonville so I can’t hurt you anymore.”
“Excuse me?” You interrupted.
He looked over at you now, his face barely showing frustration, but enough that you noticed.
“She shouldn’t have to move states so you can control yourself. You should leave.”
He paused, his gaze shifting from you back to Bella.
You’d heard enough. Seen enough. Felt enough. Storming out of the hospital room, you began thinking long and hard about what you could do to keep Bella in Forks, to keep her, Charlie, and yourself safe even if she didn’t participate in that process. In a way, it felt like you had to learn how to place baby-protection over every single thing that could harm her. Sharp objects, heavy objects, power outlets, vampires—they all had to be removed and/or secured. Because Bella was stubborn, increasingly so, but you were too. She’d fight for him, you knew that. So, you’d have to fight for her.
And you will.
