I didn't call them 'potato wedges' so they may have assumed that we had some other form of food also called wedges. We do have different names than Americans for some foods.

The issue when you just say "I eat wedges" in the US is we have Potato Wedges, Cheese Wedges (a slice from a wheel of cheese), there's a type of sandwich called a Wedge, Wedge Salads, Watermelon Wedges, etc. Just saying 'wedge' isn't specific enough for us!

Also, some parts of the US have different names for potato wedges, such as Jojos (according to Wikipedia).
