People think the goal is to just do really big movies or something. But as an actor you understand the work you want to do, and if youāre allowed to do that, then thatās great. I feel very creatively satiated. Iām excited by projects Iāve done in the last year more than ever before. If I can keep working with filmmakers like that, Iād be happy as a clam.

Lily usually comes the same day as me, so sheāll be by before long. She only stays for a couple hours, though. So if you wanna clear out and come back, you should be good by sundown.ā
Grace shrugged āIām not stayingā she said flatly, glancing around to make sure there were no more prying eyes. She turned in to her wolf form and shook the dirt out her fur.
Samās eyes flashed gold and he braced himself for the wave of animal instinct to hit him. Graceās essence was different from Taylorāsā¦worn down, blunted at the edges, weary. She was hundreds of years old, he could tellā¦seventeen when sheād gotten the bite. Sam knelt on her level again, peering into her eyes.
āItās not your fault,ā he said quietly. āAll the crap that happened in Kaiās life. You leaving him. Not your fault.ā
Grace whined softly and wiped her eye with her paw. She ducked her head and shuffled backwards, trying to shut him out.
āIām serious,ā Sam insisted, his voice still soft. āNot your fault. Nothing that happened between you two was your fault. Kai never blamed you, either. Itās not your fault, heyā¦itās seriously not.ā
Grace barked at him before bounding away and out of sight

The sound of the leaves crunching udner his boots reminded Sam of potato chips crackling as he crossed the graveyard, the box of donuts in his hand. The way to Kaisās grave was so familiar to him by now, he didnāt even have to think about it to find the plot among all the monoliths. But he wasnāt prepared to see someone else thereā¦a blonde girl crouching by the grave. Same hesitated some distance away. āLils?ā he called.
Grace slowly turned to look at sam, her face blank and flat of emotion. āThose for us?ā She Said looking at the box of donuts
Sam hesitated, suddenly sheepish. Nobody but Lily knew that he brought donuts to Kaiās grave. Not even his parents. āUh,ā he said, intelligently.
Grace rolled her eyes and turned back to the gravestone āI can see why you got frustrated with this oneā she said softly, Picking at the grass
Sam finally remembered his tongue, strolling over to the grave and standing off tot he girlās side. āYou knew Kai?ā he said. āI kind of figured all his friends wereā¦yāknowā¦long dead.ā
Grace kept her eyes on the stone āthatās what he thoughtā she whispered, a sadness dropping over her face. Grace pushed her fingers into the Grace and spread them out āthis is bad ground, you should never have buried him hereā she snapped
Sam cocked his head. āYeah? Wellā¦I was kind of in the middle of a breakup, the love of my life was running off with my twin brother, my diner was defaulting on loansā¦I didnāt exactly have time for soil excavation. I just wanted to make sure someone buried him the decent way,ā he crouched and dug his fingers into the soil, frowning. āWhatās wrong with it? Is it cursed or something?ā
Grace frowned at him āhe wouldnāt want to be hereā¦ He would have wanted an unmarked grave somehow in the mountainsā¦ Heād have wanted true peaceā she replied, watching sam with a keen eye. Grace wasnāt lookin her best. Her hair had a few twigs and leaves scattered amongst the roots, her clothes were dirty and a little ripped. And her combat boots had definatly seen better days. But she pulled it off without looking homless
Sam tried to pretend he didnāt want to stare at this chick. She definitely had a Red Dawn Survivalist vibe going on. Interesting was one of the first words that came to mind. He dug his fingers deeper into the soil for a second, staring at the small headstone. āKai wanted a lotta stuff he didnāt get, thanks to Eve,ā he pulled out his hand, dusted it off and extended it to her. āNameās Sam Crowley. Youāre a werewolf, huh?ā
Grace narrowed her eyes at him and didnāt take his hand āhow do you know that?ā She said slowly, her guard rising
āIām half-phoenix and half-angel,ā Sam smiled, āmy platonic soulmateās a phoenix. Iāve got thisā¦sense, I dunno. I can tell what monster someone is when they walk into a room. And I can communicate with your kind when youāre in wolf form. That was one talent Kai never knew I had. I wish I couldāve shown him.ā
Grace drew in a slow breath, finding herself growing angry at this kid. He thinks he knew kai! He thinks he knew her kai better than she did. Nobody understands kai the way she did. "Near parkour trick but hardly something to rave about" she snapped. It probably comes from adam if his daughter is linked to you" she said flatly, making it seem like the obvious explination

Stillness Between
āHumans tend to be kinder than monsters,ā Kai shrugged. āIt might be in our breeding. Theyāre just a gentler species.ā He was looking absently over his shoulder at a forge near the outskirts of the town. There was an enormous wooden board full of hooks displayed out front, and on those hooks, rings. Kaiās tongue flecked his bottom lip; he led Grace some distance into the trees, where she would be out of eye and earshot. Then he grabbed her shoulders and pushed her down on a fallen tree. āStay here,ā he warned her. āIāll be back.ā
Grace huffed a laugh and rolled her eyes, watching as kai vanished through the trees. For the first time in perhaps her entire life, Grace felt at ease with the world and excited for her possible future with her wolfy. But nobody gets to be happy in the world that Eve was creating. Eve emerged from the trees, her dress flowing just above the dirt so as not to sweep up the mud. āThis is quaint isnāt it?ā She hummed, smirking when Grace almost fell to the floor, stumbling away from her. āI had a feeling you would vanish from my grounds rather soonā¦ The mountains were my first guessā she chuckled. āPlease I-lā Grace planned to beg for her life, for Kaiās lifeā¦ But she cut short with a hand tightening around her throat. āI donāt want to her it Gracieā she spat. āYou should have died long ago! But I suppose better late then never in this case. Eve heard footsteps approaching through the brush. Kai was coming back. When Grace saw kai emerge from the trees she laying on the floor alone, her throat slit and bleeding down her front and through her fingers. Her eyes were wide in fear and she couldnāt form words to warn him.
Kaiās whistling stopped. The ring heād been flipping like a coin over his knuckles, stopped. For a second he was frozen, his head swamped with the rich tang of blood and fear that seeped from Graceās body. Swearing at the top of his voice, he tumbled to his knees in the leaf dirt beside her, grabbing her head in his hands. āNo-no-no-no, Graceā¦Grace!ā his shout was so loud, it sent all the nearby birds skittering into flight. āNo! Donāt you leave me, Grace!ā
Kai transformed in a flurry of desperation, the ring dropping onto the soil beneath him. What the hell happened? He took her arm in his teeth. Youāre not leaving me. Kai bit down, breaking the skin, filling Graceās body with his essence. It just had to reach her heartā¦.just reach it before the blood stopped pumping out of her throat.
Grace was crying, the tears staining her cheeks as she reached s hand over to grip his fur . She didnāt take her eyes of him. Not once. Not even when she felt her heart slowing and the blood trickling less and less.
Kai laid his massive head on Graceās chest, trying to warm her as the blood left her body. His liquid gaze was fixed on her face, his huffing breaths punctuated with whimpers. Donāt go. Donāt leave me, his mind tumbled with the same mantra, over and over again. Grace, please.
Graces hand slowly relaxed and dropped to the floor. Her eyes lidded and clouding over. Kai heard the last beat of her heart and her final breath wafted across his fur like a soft breeze. He hadnāt got there in time.
Stillness Between
āHumans tend to be kinder than monsters,ā Kai shrugged. āIt might be in our breeding. Theyāre just a gentler species.ā He was looking absently over his shoulder at a forge near the outskirts of the town. There was an enormous wooden board full of hooks displayed out front, and on those hooks, rings. Kaiās tongue flecked his bottom lip; he led Grace some distance into the trees, where she would be out of eye and earshot. Then he grabbed her shoulders and pushed her down on a fallen tree. āStay here,ā he warned her. āIāll be back.ā
Grace huffed a laugh and rolled her eyes, watching as kai vanished through the trees. For the first time in perhaps her entire life, Grace felt at ease with the world and excited for her possible future with her wolfy. But nobody gets to be happy in the world that Eve was creating. Eve emerged from the trees, her dress flowing just above the dirt so as not to sweep up the mud. āThis is quaint isnāt it?ā She hummed, smirking when Grace almost fell to the floor, stumbling away from her. āI had a feeling you would vanish from my grounds rather soonā¦ The mountains were my first guessā she chuckled. āPlease I-lā Grace planned to beg for her life, for Kaiās lifeā¦ But she cut short with a hand tightening around her throat. āI donāt want to her it Gracieā she spat. āYou should have died long ago! But I suppose better late then never in this case. Eve heard footsteps approaching through the brush. Kai was coming back. When Grace saw kai emerge from the trees she laying on the floor alone, her throat slit and bleeding down her front and through her fingers. Her eyes were wide in fear and she couldnāt form words to warn him.
Kaiās whistling stopped. The ring heād been flipping like a coin over his knuckles, stopped. For a second he was frozen, his head swamped with the rich tang of blood and fear that seeped from Graceās body. Swearing at the top of his voice, he tumbled to his knees in the leaf dirt beside her, grabbing her head in his hands. āNo-no-no-no, Graceā¦Grace!ā his shout was so loud, it sent all the nearby birds skittering into flight. āNo! Donāt you leave me, Grace!ā
