Autumn: the season when leaves should start falling -- not your grades! It’s midterm season and whether or not you still have midterms to take, keep on top of your work before it starts to pile up. If the work has already started to pile up, there’s only one thing to do: jump in!
Getting Work Done
Splitting your time between assignments, studying, and applying to jobs/fellowships/PhD programs can be difficult. As overwhelming as it may seem, refrain yourself from getting stressed. You might lose sight of why you’re actually doing the work, i.e. you do the work just to get it done.
Put 110% effort into your grades and applications, but when you don’t get the grade you want, get the job, or the grant, remember that you are still alive and have the potential to get better grades and forward your career if you keep moving forward. Failure is part of the learning experience.
For those applying for grants, do your research. I suggest
i) reading about what application reviewers look for in an application,
ii) reading essays of those who received the NSF or SMART grant,
iii) finding relevant literature for your essays,
iv) and reading tips on how to write well-developed essays.
It’s better to have necessary information running in the back of your head as you work on your applications, as opposed to interrupting your thought process with instances of searching this-and-that up.
Taking Breaks
Reward yourself with break time only when you have accomplished a task (not based on the amount of time you have spent on an assignment). If you get stuck on a problem or have writer’s block, cook a meal, go for a walk, clean, or take a hot shower to relax and re-organize your thoughts before getting back to work.
