A womans voice sounds from behind Pen.
Pendragon was deeply immersed in reorganizing the latest additions to his collection when he hears a voice behind him.
He turns, pupils narrowed into slits as he looks behind himself, looking down to see a witch. At least, she dressed like a witch and radiated otherworldly energy.
“…How did you find the Archives? Why are you here?”
His voice is wary but not unwelcoming. He is mildly amused and fascinated by this stranger, curious as to how she made her way into his domain.
The woman kept her head down, angling her hat's brim to obscure her face entirely, and yet somehow it felt as if she was looking right up at pen. She calmly walked in a circle around the dragon man, high heels echoing across the archives as she continued examining him without a care.
"Oh just a humble potion crafter out on a stroll. And you're the custodian of this library I presume"
He blinks a bit in surprise, his pupils rounding out slightly as she walks around him.
Here’s someone who has seen many things, and knows many things. While he doesn’t exactly conceal the archives, that was because he was under the impression that he was the only living soul that knew of its existence, let alone how to reach it.
“…A stroll, hm? I see.”
He crosses his arms as he appraises the woman before him. She looks pale, and smells like herbs and copper, and traces of magic seem to lift off of her in his eyes.
“I find that difficult to believe. Even the most wanderlust wanderers would find it difficult to enter the Celestial Archives of their own accord.”
The witch accepts the fact pen won't leave it be and decides to unveil just one of her secrets. Without losing any momentum she twirls, heel dragging a perfect circle across the floor. She falls into the freshly opened portal, then lands behind pen and taps his shoulder.
"As I said, just taking a stroll. This isn't my first time here, just the first coming across you"
There was a slight lilt of amusement in her voice, like she was entertained by this mighty entity trying to casually interrogate her.
Portals. He suspected as much. He lets out a small huff at her vague answers, crossing his arms over his broad chest. There are still several questions he has, like how she found out about the Archives in the first place, and-
“…You’ve been here before? Just how long have you been coming here?”
More puzzles, more secrets. He could just read her mind, but he has a feeling that anyone who’s made it this far would have precautions against that. What’s strange to him as well is none of the Archivists reported seeing her when they usually do.
“At least reveal your name to me, traveler.”
"I'd insist you go first if I didn't already know, Pen. I can be referred to with the term Azure, yes like the color. It's my favorite"
A spectral hand gently removes a book from a nearby shelf and opens it, a second apparition appearing to flip through the pages. The pair lower to the witch's vision so she can read
"I've been coming and going for over a year now, your archivists are rather helpful"
His eyes narrow again. It’s rare that someone knows more about him than he does about them, even their presence in his own home. It troubles him quite a bit, but for now he just lets out a soft huff.
“Well then. I don’t know how you convinced them to keep your presence hidden from me for an entire year, but all these truths will come to light eventually.”
Pendragon clears his throat before bowing slightly, his tail swishing behind him.
“For now, I extend a belated welcome to the Celestial Archives. My name is Pendragon, and indeed I am the custodian and curator of this realm.”
He stands back to his full height as he looks back to Azure as her spectral hands read the book. He looks around himself a bit before summoning a book seemingly from thin air himself.
“…At least the Archivists have been doing their jobs, you seem to have had quite the fascinating stay here, as well as… an interesting life surrounding it.”
Azure does not respond, continuing to read for a tense few seconds after Pen's formal introduction.
"My mind houses things that can travel by the shared thought of mind reading. I strongly suggest you quit trying before you end up with a psychic parasite feeding off your memories or some such other horror"
She closes the book with an authoritative clap before having her mage hands return it to the shelf.
“Oh, you are a shrewd one indeed,” he says with a fanged smile. He chuckles slightly as he watches Azure’s spectral hands return the book to its proper place. He shakes his head lightly as he tuts, opening his eyes again to behold the witch before him.
Many mysteries seem to surround her, but he’ll unravel in time. He always does.
“Well, as long as you return whatever records you borrow, feel free to stay as long as you like (not that it’s stopped you before), and if you have any questions, find me or one of my Archivists, they know as much as I regarding what’s inside the Archives.”
He gives Azure a light bow again before stepping away, floating towards a higher shelf. He has a feeling this won’t be the last time he sees this enigmatic visitor, but since she hasn’t done anything to draw his ire, he’s content to let her be for now.
