Grand Doodle: Fall into the Season Winners

Hey Chasers, it's MOD Suteki here with the winners of the recent Fall into the Season Grand Doodle! I'm sure you all are ready to see the results, so let's get straight to it.

I was stunned with what you all brought to the table. There were a variety of entries that worked their hardest to capture what Fall was like for the Chase. So, let's take a look at the Runners-Up!

Momo1112GC1 brought us a lovely image of seven members of the chase in a park, enjoying the fall. SakumaJirou brought a simple image of Elesis, Arme, adn Lire walking and observing the falling leaves. Yumeryu showed a poignant image of Lire and Edel, both laying in the leaves. LoopyDoopa gave a manga-style picture, showcasing some of the Chase in a park with fall leaves and rustling wind blowing. And, Zyrnt showed us most of the Chase dressed in their best casual fall attire in front of a pretty sunset.

As for our Grand Winner? Faigari brought the feeling of fall with their submission. Pumpkin harvesting and leaf raking and even some lovely selfies were seen! With seven members of the Chase, plus a few of their pets, this picture really showed how the Chase would want to spend their fall.

So, thank you to everyone who tried, even if you didn't end up placing. All entries were appreciated, and there were so many pretty pictures! But please, keep an eye out for the next Grand Doodle!

Grand Chase Dress to Impress: Free for All! Winners

Hello, Chasers! MOD Suteki here. Fall came and it was a time for giving Thanks. What was I thankful for? The lovely entries in the Free for All Dress to Impress! Curious to see who won? Let's take a look!

The holidays and the school rush found in November meant fewer of you guys participated, but there were still some stellar outfits! Let's see who made the cut by looking at the Runners-Up first!

Congratulations to Arthey, Huli, and Jeva! You all showed a good combination of cohesiveness, variety, and creativity, earning between 12 and 12.5 points for your outfits. For your efforts, you each win 500 K-Ching!

Now, to the Grand Winner.

Congratulations (again) to Mirantu! with 13.25 points, your outfit blew me away. Lire's traditional color pallet was well-used, in combining greens with accents of gold to match her blonde hair. The outfit gave royal vibes, as well as a hint of magical girl inspiration. For your efforts, you are the Grand Winner of this contest, earning 2,000 K-Ching!

To all who competed, even if you didn’t get a prize, thank you very much for entering! You all submitted great entries, making it no easy task to judge. Please keep an eye out for the next Dress to Impress, since you never know when it may get here!

Grand Chase Dress to Impress: Trick or Treat! Winners

Hello, Chasers! MOD Suteki here. It may not quite be Halloween, but I'm already passing out treats to some lucky Chasers! They came Trick or Treating in the Trick or Treat Dress to Impress from the forums, and I saw some stellar costumes. Nothing scary in here, so let's give it a look!

Forty of you guys came knocking and there were a ton of different costumes to be seen. I didn't see every member of the Chase, but there were quite a few. Uno seemed to have been a crowd favorite to dress up, as was Arme.

Let me just say that you all stepped up your game. Average scores were higher, and you guys really looked at what it took to win! I'm glad to see that. But, only four could get a prize, so I looked at each costume for Cohesiveness, Variety, and Creativity, where costumes could get up to five points in each, meaning a maximum of fifteen points could be earned. Curious to see who got to move forward? Let's take a look, starting with the Runners-Up!

Congratulations to MrSnail, SakuyaXeragi, and Jeva! An Angel of Death, a Deranged Ringmaster, and a Little Witch came to my doorstep, and they showed excellent creativity, variety, and cohesiveness in their costumes. Each of you earned 13.5 points during scoring, beating out the competition and earning spots as Runners-Up. Congratulations! For your efforts, you each win 500 K-Ching.

Now, to the Grand Winner.

Congratulations to Mirantu! Mirantu's outfit brought a great example of cohesiveness and creativity to the mix, earning a total of 14 points. The colors matched well, and managed to completely avoid Lire's natural green, instead combining warm reds to yellows and dark greys and blacks. Mirantu went as Samsara's Free Agent, combining a unique theme with a Grand Chase cosplay as well. This entry served as a textbook example of how with proper execution, creativity can trump all. For your efforts, you are the Grand Winner of this contest, earning 2,000 K-Ching!

To all who competed, even if you didn't get a prize, thank you very much for entering! You all raised the bar, making it no easy task to judge. Please keep an eye out for the next Dress to Impress, since you never know when it may get here!

Grand Doodle: Uno, the One and Only Results

Hi Chasers, it’s MOD Suteki here with the winners of the recent Uno Grand Doodle from the Grand Chase forums. I'm sure you all are antsy to see the results, so let's get to it!

With over forty entries, you all stunned me. I want to say thank you to all participants for trying your hardest. It was incredibly hard to judge; so many of you brought your A-game. If there were more winner slots, it'd have been easier, but only six could get a prize. So, let's start by looking at the Runners-Up!

Momo1112GC1 brought a lovely, wistful-looking Uno among a field of roses to the table. Toyanimalx showed Uno sad, yet with Reina still looking over him with love and forgiveness. Faigari showed us Uno with his back turned, sad yet surrounded by red. Blood, or petals? Maybe both. Sachiyoco also looked at the tragic relationship between Uno and Reina. And Rinbell showed us Uno in Full Bloom. For their efforts, these five artists won 1,000 K-Ching.

But, there was only one Grand Prize. Who got it?

Minimusha did. Minimusha brought us an image with all of the quintessential parts of Uno: his relationship with Reina, his affinity to blood-red roses and his katana, and his overall tragic feel. For capturing him so well, Minimusha won the Grand Prize of 3,000 K-Ching.

As I said before, there were so many other stellar pictures drawn that captured Uno beautifully. Please be sure to check them out on the forums too! And as always, please keep an eye out for the next Grand Doodle. There's one going on now, so if that sounds good, check it out! See you next time!

Grand Chase Dress to Impress: Trick or Treat!

Hey Chasers! MOD Suteki here. It's about a week into October and Halloween is creeping closer and closer. I'm sure all the members of the Chase are aware of this too. So, for their first Halloween here at KOG Games, let's give them a trick... or a treat!

In this Dress to Impress, your job is to dress up any member of the Grand Chase like they're going Trick or Treating. It's not that hard: to do so, they must be in a "costume." This "costume" doesn't have to be spooky. It can be anything from a fanciful princess outfit to a knight in shining armor, a cute bunny to a fierce beast, an angel, a little devil, or even a cosplay! The sky's the limit here. The main point of this contest is creativity, so keep that in mind when designing your outfit.

Grand Chase Dress to Impress: Minimalist Chic Winners

Hello, Chasers! MOD Suteki here, bringing good news. I know it's only been a few days since the Minimalist Chic Dress to Impress ended, but I've already got some winners for you all to see!

But first... let me just say how impressed I am at you all. There were a whopping 111 entries in this contest, and each character from Grand Chase was entered at least once. Girls were the crowd favorite with 62 of the entries, and Ley was the popularity queen earning 12 of those on her own.

Of course, which character you picked meant nothing in the way of scores. It was just an impressive thing. And with 111 entries to go through, judging wasn't easy. There were five points able to be earned in each Cohesiveness, Variety, and Creativity, meaning a maximum of fifteen points could be earned. This round's Grand Winner got a total of 13.5 points, but there eight people right behind them with 13 points. And picking the Runners Up from those eight people wasn't easy.

So, without further ado, let's look at our Runners Up.

From left to right, congratulations to Hilem, lGrul, and Xian3V! You each did spectacularly, earning a solid 13 points each. You each did something stellar in your own right and managed to beat the rest of the competition, earning 500 K-Ching for your efforts.

Grand Chase Dress to Impress: Minimalist Chic

Hi Chasers! MOD Suteki here, and I’m back with a new Dress to Impress this month. The good news is that you can use whichever character you want! But of course, there is a theme.

This contest is all about Minimalist Chic. How well are you at designing outfits without using any accessories at all?

This contest will be running from: 9/12/2014 - 9/30/2014 11:59:59 PM PDT

Information and Rules

Users are given two weeks to create a stunning outfit. You may use any character you wish, but absolutely no accessories may be equipped.

Users may use any items from any sets they wish for any of the armor slots (helm, upper armor, lower armor, gloves, shoes, mantle, and weapon). However, no items at all may be visible on the five accessory slots (circlet, mask, wings, shields, stompers). Please do not wear signboards or floating characters to cover up these slots, as they still have effects in screenshots. Please also avoid wearing crests, rings, necklaces, or anklets that give a visual effect to your character.

Contestants are limited to one entry. So design the best outfit you can for any character and make it count. You may edit your entry at any point before the contest ends, but once time runs out, you are stuck with your final submission.

Your submission must include:

A screenshot of all equipped armor/weapon items. If you have both standard and Coordi armor equipped, you may include them in one single image.

A screenshot of the outfit taken within the inventory screen (NOT the Coordishop, otherwise you risk being disqualified).

At least one screenshot of your character wearing the outfit in any map. It may be a dungeon, PvP map, or the Park. Be sure that no other users are shown, and please do not obscure your character’s outfit with any skill effects. This isn’t like the Facebook Screenshot Contests; the focus here is your character’s outfit first and foremost.

Your IGN, of course. If your IGN isn’t in your submission post, you’ll be disqualified by default.

Grand Doodle: Uno, the One and Only

Hello Chasers! MOD Suteki here with another contest for you!

The Chase has finally reached an even twenty characters with the release of Uno. Our new character has been with us for a little while, and we hope you've enjoyed playing him and coming to know his skills and his backstory. So now that you all have had time to get a feel for him, I think he should be honored with an art contest!

Rules:

Your artwork MUST focus on Uno. He must be included as the focus of your submission no matter what. His outfit, location, and any other Chasers included (if any) are at your discretion. But remember, Uno must be the focus of any pictures.

Keep it clean. Your image should follow the forum rules and the ToU.

Do not use any licensed characters from other games or anime in your artwork.

All artwork must be your own: this means you should not steal anyone else's art.

Dress to Impress — A Look at Judging

Hello Chasers! MOD Suteki here.

So, it's been a bit since the Dress to Impress results were released, which included reasons as to why I picked certain people. I figure that with that passed, I should explain to you all how the judging goes down and the three main parts of an outfit I look at. It's all behind the cut, and be warned, it's a monster of a text post.

For the Dress to Impress contests, I'm the only judge. While it's liberating, it also makes things difficult: if I don't clearly label my criteria, there's always that risk of bias.

So, let's look at it. In Grand Chase, there are a total of twelve visible spots for gear: six for armor, one for weapon, and five for accessories. And it's with these twelve slots that users worked their magic and submitted lovely entries in the Magnificent Mari contest.

I look for three main things in judging: cohesiveness, variety, and creativity. When combined, they are my basis for judgment. Let's look at these in more detail.

Cohesiveness

So, in the rules and info, I tried to emphasize that you should be unique and creative with your sets. Here, I'll go into that some more. If it's in italics, it was mentioned verbatim in the Info and Rules section of the contest post. So, let's get to it.

Users are given two weeks to create a stunning outfit

The purpose of the contest was to create a "stunning" outfit. This is always subjective, but it pretty much means I'm looking for a good-looking outfit. So one of the first things to look for is how the outfit goes together. Cohesiveness is the first building block to figure out of an outfit looks "good." Things like colors and themes or feelings to an outfit are considered here.

Not every outfit has a definite "theme" to them, at least in the traditional sense. If this contest were about Halloween, that would be the running theme I'd look for. I'll sometimes be giving out themes like those, but not always. For contests that give users more free reign, it's more "what holds the outfit together?" Is the outfit cute, powerful, regal? Is it set for a location, like a beach or a gala? What sort of feel does the outfit give off? Is it dark, is it light, is it relaxed, is it battle-ready? If it's hard for me to put some word to it, chances are the theme isn't very well defined.

Within a theme, it's important to look at the colors and how they went together. An obvious answer for Mari's outfits would be "blue" since most of her items are that color. But you also have to look at the accent colors. These can change in submissions and I always like seeing what users pick.

So in the last contest, two of the Runners-Up focused on blue for her primary color yet had different accent colors.

Kurotowa's outfit shown below focused on blacks and bits of gold for the accent colors. There were some whites, but that wasn't the main focus. The top, the shoes, the mantle, and the helm all focused on black. Meanwhile, bits of gold on the shoes, bottom, helm, and weapon were lesser accent colors. Together, they helped unify the outfit for cohesiveness.

Quoxer's outfit took a different approach where the sole colors were blue and white. In a unique change, white felt to be the primary color of the outfit while blue itself was the accent color. Fanciful angel wings and cat tail aside, the outfit felt taken from a movie.

So these were some ways that unified color schemes pulled together outfits.

So in looking at cohesiveness, be sure to ask yourself two questions: "does the outfit go together well? and "does the outfit flow together without clashing elements?" There were some submitted outfits that, while creative, had aspects that didn't match at all. Even if it's just one piece of gear, throwing off the cohesiveness and color scheme of an outfit can serve as a detriment.

Variety

While the entire Dark Rexion set may look good on Mari, it doesn't show me that you really tried and wouldn't impress me as much as a well-designed outfit incorporating items from a few different sets.

In outfits, I'm looking for it to be well-designed and to incorporate items from a few different sets. This can get tricky since in designing outfits, some items have more weight in the appearance than others. This led me to splitting things up some more. First, armor and accessories were split to be judged independently.

But that's not quite enough. Armor was split into three categories: primary, secondary, and tertiary. These were determined by how big of an effect they normally have on outfits. "Primaries" here are upper and lower armors, "secondaries" are helms and mantle, and "tertiaries" are gloves, shoes, and weapon.

So in judging variety, if the primaries were of the same set, points were docked pretty heavily. If three of the same set were used overall and they weren't all tertiary, a similar penalty applied. Four or more from the same set in total meant no points were earned for armor variety. Meanwhile, if all items were of different sets, or if there were only two from a set in different categories in the outfit (the average found among submissions), points wouldn't have been deducted for variety.

Accessories were judged in their own right. If there were two armor pieces from a single set and an accessory from the same set, points wouldn't be docked in the same way. But if two or three of the accessories all came from the same set, that of course meant points would be docked.

Invisible coordi or unequipped slots are allowed in an unlimited capacity. But as with the above, completely leaving out pieces in an outfit may not be as impressive as an outfit that included them.

As far as "missing items" go, I judged based on what the common result was. Most users only had two accessories visible, so three being visible was considered a "higher standard" so-to-speak. Most users only had one piece of armor invisible, so that standard was set on its own, so anyone with all pieces visible was a higher standard as well. Anyone who went too far under the standard may have had points docked for lack of variety.

Of course, armor was weighted more than accessories, as it has a much larger effect on the outfit as a whole. This is part of why you'll see Kurotowa as a Runner-Up, even though she only included one accessory in her design.

Now, why is this stuff important? Why does it matter if you use things from the same set or just don't equip items? Well, when designing outfits, KOG clearly thought of how to make them flow well together. They're intended to go together and look good. But when a user has most of a single set equipped, it doesn't always show that they put the most of their thought into it: instead, it's a bit riding on the developers' coattails. This isn't to say that simply throwing together random items from miscellaneous sets will result in a winner -- after all, cohesiveness is still a factor. But why else does it matter if there's variety?

Creativity

Of course, it matters because of creativity. If you're not thinking of things on your own, it's not very creative, is it?

You should try to be unique and creative with your outfits.

Creativity is one of the hardest-to-define aspects of this, though. Because part of what I'm looking for in creativity is "what makes this entry stand out from the competition?"

Of course, this can change every time. The most recent competition focused on a single character, Mari. So I was looking for what differences users did compared to others. If it was a look or piece I saw a lot, it might not have been thought of as more creative than others, for example.

There was also looking at what the rest of the competition attempted to do. So in this past contest, several people used pieces from the Enchanted Runecaster set, namely the glasses. So in weighing out "what's more creative" it was important to take that into account. If an outfit felt cohesive and used them it may not have been a problem, but an outfit that felt equally as cohesive while using a different mask could have been deemed more creative.

Color-wise, blue was used quite a lot by default. Outfits that changed things up by using a different focus color surprised me. This could be seen in Quoxer's outfit where white, not blue, felt to be the main color. With gold/yellow being a common secondary color among items, some users also made gold a larger focus than the blue. But a few outfits used some of Mari's Alternate Color items, which focused on reds and blacks instead of using the commonly-found, cooler-toned blues.

So looking at Runners-Up, AiEnny's good use of variety of items and a creative color scheme served as a benefit. one of the things that added creativity points though was the use of the Grim Reaper's Eye accessory, which hadn't been used by others. That choice felt more innovative.

Bringing It Together

When all of these aspects are brought together, I'm looking for something cohesive, something with variety, and something creative. Let's look at Grand Prize winner hilha's outfit to see how it stacked up.

For its variety, minimal points were docked. All armor slots were used, and only a primary and tertiary overlapped set-wise. For accessories, hilha used three pieces. Unfortunately, the Attendant's Kerchief clashed color-wise, which would have been more severe of a deduction if it hadn't been so small and if she hadn't gone over the standard 2 accessories most other users managed.

For cohesiveness, the outfit focused on blues and blacks with white and gold being the accent color.  The areas the blacks were found were mostly on the extremities -- so the stockings and shoes, the arms, and the hat. Blues were found mostly at the center, so the hair, torso, and skirt areas. Bits of golds and whites were found bordering these areas, with golds serving as borders along the arms and torso while bits of white broke up the mantle and leg areas. The outfit felt cute as well, with the Sweet Heart mantle and the Serdin School bunny as stompers.

For its creativity, the set felt unique. The Enlightened Runecaster glasses were used, which meant the outfit didn't get full points. But the outfit stood out from others submitted and came together well.

So. Now you know what I was thinking with the Grand Chase Dress to Impress: Magnificent Mari contest. These lessons may not hold true for every Dress to Impress contest, depending on themes and expectations. Some may emphasize one of the three aspects more than another. But next time one comes around, I hope you all can take these lessons and put them to work!

Grand Chase Dress to Impress - Magnificent Mari Results

So, this contest was all about Kounat's mysterious survivor, Mari. She got her Skill Tree, so it was only natural to honor her with a fashion contest. And you all surprised me. There were several amazing submissions and it was incredibly hard to narrow it down. So how did I? Sticking to guidelines put in the rules. As I mentioned there, I was looking for creativity and uniqueness in tandem with an outfit looking good. These are all subjective terms, but I tried to give some guidelines. I would have preferred to see outfits using items from several different sets compared to an outfit whose components mostly came from the same one. So if you used three or four armor pieces from the same set, chances were you were dropped in favor of outfits that didn't face that. Additionally, outfits that used several visible accessories well had a leg up on outfits that only used one or two. I saw some users equip items that weren't visible, such as signboards or the Choco Bracelet. While technically items, they're not visible so they wouldn't have added as much to an outfit as a visible circlet or shield, even if those items weren't very visible on their own. This wasn't to say that outfits that used no accessories, our outfits that used multiple items from the same set couldn't win. But looking at things and scoring them, some choices had to be made. So. I was looking for creativity, good use of items from multiple sets, and decent use of accessories. This still made it hard to judge, but only because so many of you submitted amazing outfits. So who came out on top? Let's look at the Runners-Up first, each of whom won 500 K-Ching for their efforts. Quoxer

Quoxer's Mari rocked the white-and-blue color scheme rather well. The items used were from several different sets, and there was minimal use of invisible items. There were three visible accessories used, which was good as well. The outfit felt cohesive and it felt like there was a unified theme to the outfit. The angry face from the Furious Mask clashed with the serene feel from the white clothes and that was a bit of a detriment, but the outfit stuck to the rules laid out very well. AiEnny

This outfit's main feature was its creativity. AiEnny's Mari used items from several sets to bring out an alternate color set, instead focusing on reds, blacks, and a bit of white. Items from entirely different sets were used, which showed AiEnny thought out how to best coordinate them. The weapon clashed some, and they were lacking shoes or a mantle. But the creativity pulled up its score, earning it a spot among the finalists. Kurotowa

Figuring out the third of the finalists was no easy task. Kurotowa's Mari combined outfits from different sets uniquely, all while maintaining a cohesive theme. Additionally, she used all of the armor slots in creating an outfit focusing on blues and blacks. However, only one accessory was visible, so that was a detriment holding it back from being the Grand Winner. So having seen the Runners-Up, who could have gotten the Grand Winner prize of 2,000 K-Ching? hilha

Upon seeing the outfit hilha's Mari wore, I knew it would be hard to not place it. It did things very well. Items from eight different sets were used in bringing together this outfit. Only two items, both accessories, were invisible out of the entire outfit. The outfit focused on blues and blacks, with white and yellow accents throughout that pulled it together. In looking at how well this Mari's outfit listened to the criteria, it was obvious that she pulled it together well and created a unique, creative outfit in the process. So, there you have it. Grand Doodle: Magnificent Mari Results

Hi Chasers, it's MOD Suteki here with the winners of the recent Magnificent Mari Grand Doodle from the Grand Chase forums. Let's get straight to it!

Grand Prize winner was KunKnee with a lovely picture of Mari as Geas. It was well-drawn and truly captured Mari's personality in a stunning image. It blew me away, and in doing so won 3,000 K-Ching.

That's not to say the Runners-Up were any less amazing. Yumeryuu brought a simple-yet-poignant image of Mari as Polaris to the table. OtoMegane69 showcased Mari as Runecaster envisioning her future jobs, showcasing her potential for growth. Back with Polaris, Darkblizer showed Mari wandering through the snow. Loopydoopa brought a greyscale picture of the havoc Gunslinger has been known to wreak on the battlefield, showing that while Mari may be quieter, she's certainly not afraid to fight. Finally, Rikaberry brought quite the story to us in a multi-panel comic, showing Runecaster as she changes to her more powerful Skill Tree form. Each Runner-Up won 1,000 K-Ching for their efforts.
