Why Bubbie Does Good Fashion.
Growing Up I was incredibly close to both of my grandmothers. My paternal grandmother, Miriam, had an affinity for ‘70s romantic comedies (think Barbara Streisand, Jane Fonda) and collected pieces like furry kangol berets, corduroy pageboy hats, fringed colorful knits and chunky Native American Turquoise and Opal jewelry that mimicked the boho playfulness of the sassy leading ladies. My Bubby Ruthy (of Russian descent) likes Floridian thrift-shop chic (read: chunky jewelry, straw bags, beaded angora sweaters much like the ones that were swaddling models on the Prada Fall runway, a penchant for chinoiserie and Memphis-ey colors like pink, mint green and pale yellow). I was always enchanted by my grandmothers’ unique brands of eclecticism and how they overlapped in their ongepotchket (yiddish for over-the-top and fancy) exuberance. Yes grandma Miriam was more New York and bubbie Ruthy is more Miami but both aesthetics are farpitz, fabulous and bursting with vintage eccentricity. In today’s era of post Gucci renaissanc, a time when vintage is more desirable than pieces that were just plucked from the runway the authenticity and sheer joy imbued in the clothing choices of older women makes for probably the coolest, most woke fashion scapes (Dunes Magazine, Grey magazine, Petra Collins campaign for Gucci Hollywood eyewear, Iris Apfel for Allure magazine) of the year.
