she only found out about her father being HADES when she was seven and he pulled her from the flames her mortal mother set. first seven years of life spent upon the surface - then seven years and counting in the underworld. she hadn't reacted with fear or anger upon learning the truth of her father's identity. her only questions were about being allowed to pet cerberus because she had a solid plan on how to pet all three heads at one - hands on the left and right heads , butterfly kisses for the middle. questions about since he's a king - does that make her a princess? she did not miss the surface with its sun and warmth - the only person she missed had been her maternal grandfather, thomas but he'd arrived in hades' realm two years prior - his soul now residing in elysium.
being in the underworld gave her siblings - like her older half-brother, zagreus and older half-sisters, melinoe and makaria. upon first finding out about them - she had squealed so loudly that hades actively had to take a step back. even if she couldn't actively spend as much time with them as she likes - she still LOVES them openly and deeply, idolizes them in typical baby sister fashion. her curiosity only grew the more she did - concern spilling into the curiosity in regard to the constant disagreements between zagreus and hades.
elizabeth finds him while on her third trip to the palace's library that afternoon. the textbook of skeletal anatomy with the two notebooks on top still resting in the crook of her arm - her free hand reaching out to hold his. when he visibly jumps - she only gives his hand a reassuring squeeze. she's unable to stop the smile that forms when he turns to her with full attention - yet the smile couldn't mask the concern in her eyes as they met his.
"no need for apologies. if anything - i should be apologizing for startling you." a brief pause. "i'm sorry - i just heard you and daddy arguing again this morning. he said to leave you be - but i wanted to come check on you." her gaze drops to his hand on hers - her curiosity pleading for the reasons behind the arguments. she knows that he wants to leave the underworld but, on her soul, - she couldn't figure out why. her eyes glancing up to meet his once more - voice barely above a whisper, "WHY do you want to LEAVE?"
AN UNDERSTANDING ONE, ISN'T SHE? MOST WOULD ALREADY HAVE A TEASING WORD AT THE READY. but not her it seems, perhaps that is a silent blessing in of itself. when she speaks of apologizing for something hardly even being considered an offense has zagreus waving his hand. “ no, no - it's alright, truly. i just ( . . . ) " ah, so she heard all that has she? no doubt their voices laid the marble to shake under their father's booming tone. it was always something different that hades has come to bicker about, but never was it something that's left zagreus thinking about it for long.
“ come now, there's nothing too worrying about a healthy verbal spat with one's father, hm? ” life jests, his smile brightening more - a mask he has worn all too often. something to hide behind, something perfect to wear ; his very own lie perhaps. but what he doesn't expect is that question that follows after, or the look she gives him. it's an obvious truth that he wants to leave, wants to escape these suffocating walls that trap him. there weren't many good memories down here, all he could remember were all the bickering, the arguments, the repeated reminders : he is nothing and will always be nothing.
but she doesn't have to know about all of that. not when he sees just how elated it must seem, to find out one has family where believed there was none. for him it's ( . . . ) of a similar caliber. where he believed himself to be without a mother, yet, finding out she was alive : persephone no less. it explained so much, yet she's gone and doesn't even know he exists. his father should not have kept that from him. “ because i don't belong. ” zagreus says, simple, softly, calmly. as if this has been something he has told himself many times. “ i wouldn't be missed much if i did leave. father saw to expressing that very thoroughly. ”

yuo guys i cant stand this zagreus disrespect. please stop calling him a himbo and lazy and stupid 😭 this guy was raised in isolation by the GOD OF THE DEAD a god so scary that when he bangs his fist on his desk, shades (who are already dead and shouldn’t be afraid anymore) literally just disappear from view. NOBODY talks back to hades, not even DEATH ITSELF, but zagreus fights him countless times on the surface while his blood curse weakens him. and he does it because he wants to reunite his family. He dies a thousand deaths (real deaths!!! Actual blood spilled!! it hurts!! he cries out each and every single time!!!) just to bring his family back together. He is motivated, he NEVER sits down, he solves ancient problems for his friends, he’s loyal and sweet, he’s polite and dutiful to the gods and to his allies, he calls achilles the shade of an old human SIR!!!!! He is as driven and capable as his sister!!! RESPECT HIM or die by my sword for real!!!!!!!!!

SHE IS THE ONE WHO MOVES IN SHADOW, and yet, occasionally, he manages to get the upper hand — perhaps comeuppance for how often she had startled him in her youth with her stillness.
Embarrassment prickles her cheeks, both at his amusement and her own lack of awareness that would surely have her chastised by her headmistress. One must always be aware of their surroundings, to embrace the shadows but keep their own eyes sharp as their blades. But where else could she let these hands unclench but the verdant embrace of her brother's domain ? She sees his influence everywhere — in the curve of a fern bearing the tender weight of cocoons, in fresh leaves punctured with the nibbles of soft-eared prey, in the blood dripping from a mother's maw in with another meal captured.
Their blood spills red and rich with spring, twined in decay and darkness, yet how stark that braided blood diverts between them — he, for who life flows and spills, she, for who it congeals and stills.
Nothing would blossom under her touch, but she walks towards him unencumbered by the worry that she will disrupt the flora, her steps poised with the grace of the witch yet retaining the same cheerful bounce she had often when she reached his hip.
❛❛ It isn't easy. ❜❜ She laments, propping herself up on the stone wall beside him, her basket stuffed with nightshade, orchids, and poppies. ❛❛ And I've hardly the touch for it like you and mother. None of my magic works on the seeds I plant. ❜❜ A huff, fingers delicately playing with the petals, as if with the reservation that they would wither under her touch, even after being picked. ❛❛ I planted my own poppies a week ago and they've hardly budged. ❜❜
AT THE WOES OF HIS SISTER'S ADMITTANCE, ZAGREUS LAUGHS - laughs and covers grinning lips behind the shield of his hand. to think his sister would share this woe with hm so easily. perhaps their relationship will come full bloom yet, a thought that warms his heart like the spring upon their visage. but perhaps this is a topic that brings her just that : a sorrow she cannot quite place. he would know it easily if it were true, a sorrow to be something, to obtain something so far out of reach by natural circumstance. “ now, now, sister. surely, it can't be that bad. ” zagreus speaks, leaning forward as his sister comes to his side. “ perhaps you haven't the right ( . . . ) oh, what is it - incantation? perhaps you can come up with something that aids its vitality. ”
with how brilliant her mind is, melinoe would come to a conclusion on her own. that much he is certain. “ sometimes it hardly even involves magic, sometimes you just need the natural approach. ” he thanks the time he has had with their mother to learn of such a thing. otherwise zagreus would find himself in the same predicament ; he already had, once, at least. “ did you smother the seeds? typically they require less soil on top for them to germinate well, and a week is hardly enough time for them to begin their little journeys. some take up to quite some time, up to a month at least. ”
he glances towards the basket of goods in which his sister delicately grazes, thoughts and wonder turn and toil in his mind and soon enough. a thought comes to him, now that all they've done is the least of their worries ( . . . ) perhaps ( . . . ) “ hey, how about i teach you a thing or two? no magic included, of course. i fear i lack the talent for it, unlike you, sister darling. ” his smiles remains warm, “ think of it as making up for lost time, hm? ”
It feels a bit like walking into a dream, doesn't it? The room appears to have been plucked from another world, another time. Incense burns, and dissipates slowly as it wafts into the air. And as if growing into the walls; bamboo, and lush undergrowth pushes itself between the walls. And, wherever they can find a place to perch; crows watch- semi translucent, and ghostly. It's a bit like a foreign shrine, molded within nature itself- and at it's center, he lounges among silken pillows and blankets. Basking as though he were the centerpiece, meant to be worshipped and admired.
" A visitor..? " muttered beneath his breath, accompanied by a thick exhale of lavender smoke. Of course his gaze is drawn immediately to the heels which burn their shape into the wooden panels of his shop. Tsk. An easy fix, it wont take but a few moments for it to mend itself anew. " Intriguing observation. " he says, louder now to address him properly. " Well... do you think you're here for a reason? " bouncing zag's query back, as he decidedly sets his pipe on it's stand. Then sits up, just enough to prop his chin atop his hand. " Why don't you have a look, since you're here. See if anything catches your eye. Decide for yourself whether this is fate, or mere chance. "
WELL RETURNING ONE'S QUESTION HARDLY HELPS THE CONVERSATION, NOW DOES IT? such were always the manner of speaking zagreus has had to partake in. it reminds him, then, of his mentor ; achilles always pushing the godling to think beyond such basic perspective. it wasn't always either of their strong suits but for a child, at the time, with no proper fatherly figure. perhaps it was natural for achilles to find his role to take that place within zagreus' life. “ well, ” zagreus begins, a pause to his words. within the underworld, there are no mistakes. that it what he has learned and what he has been repeatedly reminded. those that find themselves within gaia's depths are there for a reason, his father has drilled such a thing into his mind, a surprise anything he's said stuck.
“ well, nothing in the underworld is here by mere coincidence. that much is certain, ” another look around and he notices further : he doesn't recognize this manner of architecture. or material, to see it singe so quickly under foot and from cold stone to earthly wood. whether or not he'd find something here is a thought left to be desired, unknowing of just what can be offered here - let alone know if he is able to make any use of them. when the god looks around, everything is simple. nothing too extravagant or gilded like most of the underworld's adornments. if anything, it seemed a little homely - all things here seem ( . . . ) oddly put, all jarred in glass, herbs, and animal parts, some of these ( . . . ) such things were oft used in ( . . . ) “ zagreus turns his gaze, emerald and ruby, back to the individual. ” do you ( . . . ) perhaps partake in magic? "
his question doesn't come from a sense of insult, but rather curiosity. “ all of these things ( . . . ) they're typically involved with witchcraft. ”
THANATOS WAS NEVER ANY GOOD WITH FEELINGS. he is another pillar of stoicism within the house of hades, as steadfast and firm as the domain he embodies is. he is loyal and bound by duty. this does not leave room for his feelings.
he himself isn’t sure what he wants from zagreus. the prince apologized. he’s said everything he can say. thanatos has said everything he can say. every hateful word and chastise that he could muster. yet there has been no comfort in any of their exchangess. is it grief then, thanatos feels in his chest and his stomach? he knows her well - oizys is his sister and two often walk hand in hand. he thinks this must be her doing, then. the loss hangs heavy over him like a dark storm cloud. how can zagreus know it felt like one half of his heart was ripped from his chest and stomped all over, if thanatos does not speak it aloud?
so it is with great effort that he inhales slowly and allows his eyes to close, to break that stony countenance. ivory feathers shift. thanatos clutches their cowl, their exposed knuckles turning white as they dig into the fabric. it's unclear if he is clutching it for comfort or if they are fighting the need to conceal their face again. “i am angry,” he says. his eyes open again. uncharacteristically, though, his brow does not set into its usual scowl. his eyebrows raise and in his eyes, there is sorrow. “i am angry and i am sad, and your leaving feels like a personal betrayal. and i don’t think these feelings are fair, because if it were my own mother, i would stop at nothing to reach her.” he finally exhales, far quicker than he would have liked to. thanatos’ gaze narrows down at the prince again. “can you trust that i will forgive you in my own time?”
OF COURSE HE'D BE ANGRY, WHO WOULDN'T BE WHEN THEY HOLD A BOND LIKE THEIRS? zagreus was a fool, there was no mistaking it, such a terrible fool when faced with those that truly held a sliver of care for the prince. to know that warmth and affection of another so sweet willing to care for him. zagreus, who thought he was nothing, to all and himself, was taught to believe otherwise. to be accepted by another in the shape of death. such was life's journey. but deep down, zagreus knew that thanatos' look of sorrow is nothing to turn away from, for any veil of emotion exposed by him was more than he could ever give. “ i know ( . . . ) i know, than. ” in hopes his words provided some comfort, to express that if their places were reversed. zagreus would have felt similar, a comfort, to know that what thanatos feels isn't wrong.
“ if i were you, i would have been upset, too. i would have been angry. to think the only person who truly knew me, would have willingly left me behind without reason. ” but in the end, like death, life would have forgiven him on his own terms. on his own time, just like thanatos asks of him here, in this moment - zagreus knew that in some form, there would be common ground. whether or not their dynamic, their relationship, would remain the same would be wholly left up to the one before him. it wasn't a decision that zagreus would deny thanatos. “ i understand, ” he finally says, “ it would be unfair of me to deny you of that. i just ( . . . ) wanted you to know, in your time to yourself, that i didn't hold any manner of intent to hurt you. ” his hand rises for a moment, all so that a knuckle grazes the point of ivory feather, familiar, soft, a lovely sight they've always been. “ be well, than, please. ”
