Outcomes.
Hair Dye (Box and Tube) - To consider - Paperwork found inside the box such as instructions and heath and safety.
Shampoo and Conditioner - To consider - Two in one bottle.
Deodorant Can - To consider - Smaller cans with the Green Compressed band around meaning less waist and tackling the over use of packaging that many people look at when they shop now.
Outcome 1
Bill Bryson book cover 1 - Notes from a small Island, Front cover, Back cover and spine.
Images taken from www.mourgefile.com, free to use stock images. Between these images I settled for the bull dog, overlaid with the union jack, layer set to screen so both images could be seen with scatter effect.
Basic and block type font used to help keep text legible.
Used - Illustrator to make images large enough without pixelating, Photoshop to combine layers, scatter effect, Type and layer effects.
Primary Research 3
Another set of images looking at the packaging of products, the females being bold and elaborate colours, often elegant with soft curves with the women in the image looking directly at the customer compared to male advertising that features men looking away from the customer.
Primary research 2
A collection of packaging that was slightly different to that which was around it and therefor stood out to me. The last two images are part of the males collections but I fond that these seem to be the ones that experiment with their packaging more, with contrasting colours and a mixture of fabrics such as fake leather and bags instead of boxes. The female section seemed to look more at the shapes of the boxes rather than the boxes themselves, most of the packaging being boxes with the item itself being all soft curves and gentle colours.
Primary Research 1
While walking around town which christmas shopping I started to take a look at the most prominent pieces of packaging and advertising that caught my eye. I tried not to overly think about what it was that I was photographing and focused more on trying to capture bits that stood out to me as a potential customer.
The first two images are of large scale posters, about half the size of myself. Both are advertising perfume and aftershave. One is most obviously designed to be a ‘mans’ brand while getting the ladies looking to buy for a husband/boyfriend while the other is aimed at being a females perfume with the sex appeal to catch a mans eye as a potential gift while also creating a myth to women that this fragrance will make them ‘sexy’ and ‘desirable., It does this by showing what could be considered the current image of beauty, Pale skin, dark hair, make-up, relatively thin and NAKED!
On top of this her face is covered, making you focus on her body and the angle at which she is standing, detracting from her personal rates and making her a figure, an objectified body.
This is in contrast to the males perfume equivalent, the aftershave. The male is fully dressed, suit and the to appear sophisticated, empowered, pulled together and in control.
Other images contain a combination of packaging that has appealed to me as I passed them in the shops including ones that were advertised in both the male and female sections of shops.
The Website
Building a website is relatively easy when using one of the many sites now avalable and for this project I want to look at how these products that I am to make would be advertised, not only in stores but also as an online presence as many shops now do.
Online makes it easier to talk and interact to customers and have them shopping without having to go out into stores. Over the past few years, shopping habits have shown a dramatic shift from shop space that seems to be slowly fading off, to online stores making a huge hit within this digital era.
My outcomes
What do I plan for my outcomes?
For my outcomes I plan to do three product packaging; the first for a shampoo and conditioner, the second for a cream/moisturiser, and the third for a make up pallet consisting of matching eyeshadow, lip stick, lip liner, eyeliner and mascara.
These are going to be mocked up and digital rendered onto the products themselves as well as a physical box made from a net or origami, both of which I will consider when looking at the mock ups of the outcomes.
I also plan to make a deodorant box set, with deodorant, shower jell and scrunchy however this will be down to time restriction.
I would also like to look at doing a poster set alongside the advertisement of the brand and the products themselves to look at how the brand as a whole would market itself and not just individual products. This will be in the form of mocked up and printed posters alongside a website designed to be used for the product.
I am fully aware that some of this may not be done because of the time constraint of this brief however I plan to have the research and first three packaging concepts complete by January 4th. This is so that I have what I need to apply the concepts of the products to other mediums of communication as this is a Branding based project.
