I finally figured out how to place text behind an object in Photoshop without pulling my hair out, which completely saved my graphic design layouts from looking like cluttered, overlapping messes. Before I learned this trick, I used to waste so much time manually erasing text edges or using the clumsy pen tool to roughly cut out my subjects, only to end up with jagged lines and un-editable text layers that ruined the whole vibe of my images.
If you want to quickly add depth to your edits, here is the quick 3-step non-destructive workflow I use:
The Quick 3-Step Trick:
Step 1: Type Your Text
Drag your image into Photoshop.
Grab the Horizontal Type Tool (T) and type out your text right over your subject.
Hit Ctrl + T (or Cmd + T) to scale and position it exactly where you want it.
Step 2: Let AI Select Your Subject
Click back onto your background image layer in the Layers Panel.
Go to Window > Contextual Task Bar and click the glorious Select Subject button. Photoshop will instantly wrap a selection around your subject.
Step 3: Mask and Invert
With the selection active, click back onto your Text Layer.
Click the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
Click the white mask thumbnail next to your text, and press Ctrl + I (Windows) or Cmd + I (Mac) to invert it.
Boom. Your text instantly drops behind the subject, and it remains 100% editable so you can change the font or spelling whenever you want!
