@woolknits / frost.
The door opened. Nakyung put on an easy smile. "Hajun, hi!," she got out, then Gureum started wriggling and she bent to put her down, watching as the dog went up to greet him with more enthusiasm than even she was able to muster. "Am I the first to get here?"
Hajun wondered a little too late if he had made a mistake coming here. It was too cold, too isolated, too quiet in this moment with no one else around except Hana, who was elsewhere in the house. He knew this would change soon, but in that moment his eyes turned to his empty luggage. He'd done what he wanted -- to help Hana inspect the house and get everything ready. Theoretically, he could pack up and leave. Get back stateside and swap his winter coat for something lighter.
Except he couldn't, not really. Guilt shackled him in place, right there in front of the fireplace where photos of the real host of this trip smiled at him. And there Hajun stood, ruminating on emotions he thought he'd already done away with, until a loud slam, then a doorbell, brought him back to Seolhwa.
Too late to leave now. He opened the door, relieved when Nakyung stood before him. "Hi--" he started, quickly distracted by the dog wagging her tail and pawing at him for attention. Which he was more than happy to give, smiling as he crouched down to pet her. "It's nice to meet you too, Gureum," Hajun greeted, his animal voice just a tiny notch higher." He'd only seen her in photos until now and though he'd never say it out loud, she was the one he was most excited to meet.
As Gureum decided that was enough attention and skittered away into the warmth, he stood up and nodded, "Yeah, first honor's all yours. Although, rooms have already been decided, so it's not the greatest honor." He glanced behind her towards the car before reaching for his coat and boots, "But I can make up for it, did you bring a lot of stuff? Let me help you bring everything in."
* introducing ; yes hi hello, i'm erika and i'm so very excited to be here!!! i'm playing im hajun, aka haneul's older brother. did he have any ties to the fateful trip? absolutely not, in fact he practically had no ties with his brother at all in recent years. but to seolhwa he went anyway, so here he is. for closure? for answers? for a chance to know who haneul was in his 20's through the eyes of those he was closest to? probably for all of the above, really anyway i'd love to plot with everyone, if you're interested please feel free to reach out directly, or give this a like and i'll get back to you as soon as i can!! i'll put some info below the cut, and here are some helpful links: — bio / profile
im hajun
32 y/o, older brother, general manager at father's trading company
was not particularly close with haneul in recent years, so aside from family or childhood friends, this will most likely be his first time meeting the majority of the guests here (well, aside from at the funeral parlor)
we can always cook up some other reason they may knew each other beforehand though, whether through haneul or not!!
anyway back to hajun- eldest child, so he was always primed to take over the family company, which meant his parents were stricter with him than they were his siblings, had more expectations of him, etc.
hajun never really complained and did as he was asked, the picture perfect 엄친아/mom's friend's son tbh
was lowkey jealous? of the life his brother got to live, aka more freely than hajun, more options available to him and the ability to do whatever he wanted. that was partially why they drifted apart, because hajun didn't want to let those feelings fester into something more negative
he sure regrets that now, though
narratively speaking, he's basically a foil to haneul - the quieter one, the responsible, the protector, etc.
post-incident
hajun traveled a lot for business before haneul's death, but he's done even more so after. this trip will be his longest stretch of time in korea since last year
some of that traveling was for business, but instead of coping by throwing himself into his work, he's done the opposite - he's been neglecting it and took a lot of vacation days
haneul's death has shaken his view of his own life, and how he's lived so little of it
he almost didn't want to go on this trip to begin with, but he wanted to help hana get everything set up, and deep down he also felt like he needed to. to repent, to make up for lost time even if it's too little too late
The ache of everything unsaid.
