Y'all he and Joanne were best friends with GORE FUCKING VIDAL who wrote what is considered (by some) the first mainstream novel with explicitly queer themes THE CITY AND THE PILLAR.
Gore did some acting in the 1950s and met Joanne then and after Joanne and Paul became a couple they became a trio and were friends for decades going to vacations, living together et al.
Also Gore was never really in the closet so Paul & Joanne were being seen publicly and socially out with a queer man in the 1950s and didn't give a fuck.
