To celebrate Deaf History Month, Disney is releasing ASL versions of their songs on April 27th. The songs they're releasing are We Don't Talk About Bruno from Encanto, Beyond from Moana 2, and The Next Right Thing from Frozen 2. I decided to make a side-by-side video of both versions of We Don't Talk About Bruno for fun.

the one scene in Encanto that makes me cry without fail is the part in “All of You” where the Madrigals are worrying about how they’re going to rebuild the house and they turn around to find the whole village coming up the hill to help them. because ever since the magic came into existence, Alma has internalized that she and her family Have to be useful, they Have to protect the village and put up a strong front for the people or else they’ll lose everything. and she passed that fear on to her children and her grandchildren, who suppress themselves because what if people see? what if we get rejected? they’re so afraid of the villagers turning on them if they’re less than perfect all of the time.

but when the magic is gone, when Casita is rubble and nobody has their powers anymore, the village immediately steps up to help them! nobody is angry, nobody turns their back or calls them out. even Mariano and his mother, who saw the family at their worst and were repeatedly hurt by them, are offering their services with a smile. the Madrigals have helped the village for literal generations, and of course they want to return the favor, but they aren’t helping because of the Madrigals’ magic, they’re doing it because the Madrigals themselves are as much a part of the village as the rest of them. it was never about the magic. it was always the family who inspired this loyalty.

idk it just gets to me. Alma was so worried about the fear and judgment of the village, but even when her worst fear of losing the magic comes true, her fear of losing the villagers’ support was completely blown out of the water. they march up that hill with arms full of construction equipment and offer everything they have to help the Madrigals rebuild. it’s about the power of community. it’s about unconditional love. it’s about knowing that PEOPLE, not their talents, will always come first.
