She’s UTTERLY INCREDULOUS. “You’re comparing me to a FERELDEN DOG?” She’s ORLESIAN, for one thing, and very well hated by every Ferelden she’s ever met ( though, to be quite fair, she bears them no ill will for the hatred of those who were so long their oppressors ). On the other, SHE DOESN’T SMELL LIKE MUD, which they do. “Oh, you are DEAD, Duncan!” She leaps off the bed to follow him, reaching to grab at him and exact her revenge.

“It’s a COMPLIMENT, Fiona! A COMPLIMENT!!” He just barely dodges out of her reach, a grin plastered on his face despite the fact that if she catches him, IT’S ALL OVER. Duncan dances out of the way, taking the chance to explain himself. “Fereldens love their dogs! And the mabari is the smartest dog of all! Ferocious too! Don’t tell me it’s not the slightest bit accurate.”

She stepped over her first corpse, shooting Duncan a smile in the dark. “Better than ev-” Thunk. An arrow screamed out of the darkness and embedded itself in Ves’ plated chest. Thank the Paragons for boiled leather, the pointed tip barely scratched her skin. Still, she stumbled back with a curse, managing to keep her feet just well enough to raise her shield and catch the next two. “Scratch that,” she growled, barrelling over to Duncan to shield him as well, “I’m going to have a guess and say there’s more than three.”

Damn archers! He rolled closer to Ves, the pair of them using her shield for cover. Only they were sitting ducks in the dark--with the fire so close to them, and the trees casting a darker, deeper shadow on anything beneath them, they had no hope of seeing the archer before he drew his next arrow. Muttering a curse under his breath, Duncan’s gaze darted around the campsite for an idea. “On the count of three, you duck, Ves.”

Duncan blew a piece of his hair out of his face before squinting at Loghain. “Fine--but if you keep glaring like that at Maric, I won’t be the only one asking what’s going on between you two. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you’re acting the jilted lover.”

Duncan frowned, looking from Helena to Alistair and back again. He wasn’t so sure what she was talking about, but knowing Alistair, he had a feeling this wasn’t going to be a good idea. “If that’s waht you believe you should do... just... mind Alistair’s feelings. He’s got a gentle heart.”

Duncan sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as he squeezed his eyes shut. The day was still young and somehow he felt his patience reaching his limit. “And yet, I am here, persisting anyway. Your bottled up feelings are affecting the rest of our companions. I had hoped you would talk to me about them–but so long as you talk to someone, I will relent. Do that, at least?”

He’d been orphaned before, but never because he was the royal bastard. Taking Fiona’s hands in his own, he squeezed them tightly in his, waiting until she looked up at him to speak. “I’ll look after him, Fiona. I promise. I’ll make sure he’s okay.”
