Density
In The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs posits that a certain density of housing units is necessary to sustain many urban amenities such as public transit and businesses as well as to provide a vibrant street life and allow a neighborhood to be walkable. There is no perfect density level and certainly individual preferences will vary. However, in a lecture at New York University Projjal Dutra suggested the borough of Queens in New York City as an ideal density that would be dense enough to support urban life but still comfortable and appealing to the average American. The average housing unit in Queens is in a neighborhood with about 20 housing units per acre.
