When you brought a child into the world, you were supposed to do so with the promise that things, while not perfect, were at least getting better. You were supposed to look around and think, ‘yes, I’m bringing this kid into something worth fighting for.’ Most days, Tony did feel that way. All the suffering, all the battles, all the emotional damage he’d taken over the years, all of it faded away when he had just one shining moment in the middle of all the bullshit.

Today, that shining moment came in the form of an archer decked out in purple, wearing sunglasses, taking one of Zatanna’s special brand of space aliens down with one well aimed arrow in the neck. Tony pushed the body of the alien to the side so he could get out from under him, wiping at the goo on the front of his visor before he opened it. “I had that under control,” he said, getting to his feet, “but I gotta admit, your best wasn’t that bad. Where’d you learn to do that?”

“Says the man crawling out from underneath the alien.” Kate grinned, already knocking her next arrow. Most of the time, it felt like she had so much to prove. Her best had to be perfect. She thought of Clint falling out of buildings, and how it felt to take a hit and still make the shot, and how some people could encase themselves in iron, but she had purple shades and a thick covering of confidence. She did her best, and having it acknowledged by Tony Stark felt pretty validating. Ultimately it wasn’t what mattered, but...

Still. Tony Stark was giving her a compliment while crawling out from underneath the alien she’d taken care of. If she was preening, she hoped he didn’t notice. “Pretty sure I saved your life just there.” An exaggeration, but she was going to roll with it.

Clint had been with the Avengers long before Kate ever considered herself a hero. He was the man who never missed, who’d taught her the correct way to bandage a broken nose, who’d challenged her to take the impossible shot. But he wasn’t the one who’d taught her. “Practice. I started when I was little.” She couldn’t very well say young. “Some of it I picked up from Clint, too. The other Hawkeye.”

It was an easy mistake to make. It was. Never mind that Kate knew Clint like the back of her hand, with his empty pizza boxes and broken coffee carafes; his hair every which way and a quiver full of arrows he never bothered to label. She’d spent a good amount of time in Los Angeles avoiding Clint and how well she knew him. So maybe it was the hair, or the fact that he was facing the other way. Either way, Kate should’ve known. As it was–

“Hey, Hawkeye, think fast!” An arrow whizzed by the man’s left ear, imbedding itself into the brick building beside him. “I’m back in New oh futz.”

It wasn’t Clint. The angle of her bow dropped and the second arrow she’d nocked fell out of place and hanged loosely in her right hand. “I’m so sorry, I swear I’m not trying to murder you.”
