Dick had dreamed of this. Time and time again, for as long as he could remember, he’d dreamed of this. It was to the point that, when it had happened, he’d thought he was imagining it. He’d called Leslie, told her he was pretty sure he had a brain injury or something, nearly dropped the phone when she explained to him quietly that it was happening all over the city, that it was real. He still pinched himself so many times he had bruises on his arms. It didn’t change what he was seeing.
Mary and John Grayson were standing in his living room.
There’d been a lot of crying, at first. He’d talked to them until his throat ached, tried catching them up on everything good he’d been through while leaving out the bad because he didn’t know how much time he’d have and he didn’t want it to be spent in grief. He told them about Bruce, told them he was taken care of. He told them about Jason, Tim, Damian, Cass, Duke, Steph, and the rest of the family, told them he’d gotten to be a big brother even if he wasn’t always sure he was good at it. He told them about the Titans. And when he finished, they were still there.
It was Mary who asked for the introduction. She was smiling, eyes shining, saying she wanted to meet everyone, everyone who made him who he was. And there were a few pretty obvious places to start. He was knocking on Kori’s door before he knew he’d decided where to head first, fingers tapping against his thigh as he waited for her to answer. When the door swung open, he flashed her a smile. “Okay,” he said, “don’t freak out. I, uh… I wanted to ask if you’d like to meet my parents?”
Kori wasn’t sure exactly what was happening across the city. She had helped a girl get off an out of control broomstick and seen pumpkins seemingly committing various crimes or throwing insults out at people as they passed by. It felt like something out of one of those Halloween movies she had watched before, huddled up with her friends as a bowl of popcorn sat on her lap, her attention completely taken by the world before her eyes. Now that it was happening in her own world, it was a bit odd, something she was trying to register. It seemed to be mostly harmless, save for the pumpkin who tried to steal her purse and she had promptly thrown a starbolt at.
The knock at her door drew Kori’s attention away from peering out her window to see if there was any chaos she had to stop. She headed towards it and opened it, smiling instantly when she saw Dick there. Though, it quickly changed into a confused look rather. “Your parents?” She asked, hesitating for a moment. She had heard stories of Dick’s parents from him, the warmth mixed in with how much he missed them. “Your parents.” She repeated again, “I am not doing any of the freaking out! I am just...confused.” She admitted.
This was Dick though. It had been years of putting her hand in his and leaping when he asked her. That kind of trust that she didn’t have with truly anyone else save for Donna. So she was going to do just that. “I’d love to meet them,” she finally settled on with a soft smile, “They are responsible for raising my favorite human ever. I have to thank them for creating such a wonderful person.” She teased fondly, holding her hand out to put into his and have him lead the way.
