I think that this poem reflects the book very nicely. Gatsby dreams of being in a relationship with Daisy, just like the one they used to be in. He longs to be with her. This is represented by his constant longing gaze out towards the green light at the end of her dock. This poem really describes the melancholy tone that Gatsby's character reflects as he longs for Daisy's love.

The choice of "Wealth" by Langston Hughes is a great poem to relate to The Great Gatsby. 'Wealth' builds in structure as it shows money being better than kings and surpassing crowns of gold etc. This is the same principle, an insatiable desire for wealth is one that guides much of Gatsby's character. Gatsby's desire to be as wealthy as possible contributes to his downfall and this poem does an excellent job touching on this idea. Clayton

Not gonna lie I got a bit lost navigating through this blog but I like the creativity. I also enjoyed your post about passages you focused on during your reread of the Great Gatsby. I agree that although Nick was harsh with his judgements about the wealthy, many of them were right. Nick saw Gatsby for who he truly was and noticed that many of the people from the East and West egg were superficial and condescending.---JPert

I really appreciate the blunt honesty in your analysis of "Passages: The Great Gatsby." Although even our narrator Nick is imperfect, he does have an uncanny ability to "truly see through 'The American Dream' bullshit," as you so elegantly stated. I loved your choice of poem "Wealth" because, as you said, it deals very simply with a main theme of the novel--money. Daisy's voice is money. Gatsby has such beautiful shirts. Tom's apartment looks like a slice of a long white cake. The list goes on. Interestingly enough all this cash flow isn't cheering anybody up! This is exemplified in Gatsby's character because he builds himself up to be everything he ever wanted and yet he's not happy! Alima

Hey Taylor! I really liked your comparison of the poem "Wealth" by Langston Hughes to "The Great Gatsby." Although Gatsby has immeasurable wealth, he is not fulfilled, because his life is virtually empty of love and happiness. The poem illustrates this in a very simple, yet very meaningful way, especially when it says, "Halos of kindness / Brighter shine / Than crowns of gold." Awesome job!

Regarding the poem Wealth by Langston Hughes: I think this poem relates to Gatsby very well. The idea that wealth has less value than money is a truth that Gatsby learned the hard way when he acquired wealth but failed to get Daisy's love. -Evelyn Luchs

Jack Howard- Taylor, like many other kids in the class, I really think that your re-read of The Great Gatsby was very successful for many reasons. However, I just want to address your findings in terms of the literary devices. I think you hit up on this greatly, but part of what makes this novel so phenomenal is how uniquely F. Scott Fitzgerald incorporates many literary elements (imagery, symbolism, etc.) All of these devices, point towards achieving the American Dream. Great job! Jack H.

Taylor, I love the way you used Tumblr to make your blog. You created a unique way to display your thoughts and it provided me with an experience which definitely enhanced your ideas. I love the poem "Wealth" you chose, by Langston Hughes. Your analysis of it is great and it applies perfectly to the novel. I thought the poem you connected to George and Myrtle was truly a perfect fit. The piece was simple yet beautifully crafted. I wondered who was speaking in the first stanza, asking George to think of where Myrtle has been. Perhaps some third person observer like Nick or maybe even a supernatural figure like god? ~Quinn Gruver

I really enjoyed your passage describing Tom and Daisy on page 179. It truly shows Nick's revelation and is a significant turning point in the novel in which readers see Nick's character development in its totality. Early in the novel, Nick wouldn't have voiced an opinion like that but as he develops he is able to admit he is truly disgusted with the society in which Tom and Daisy live in and what they stand for. - Be a

I think your poem longing really captures Gatsby's affection for Daisy, especially how it is seen as only a dream and not really achievable. You could have also connected the poem to the American Dream, and how that could be seen as an elusive mistress as well. I guess that for Gatsby, Daisy was his version of the American Dream... anyway, nice pick! - Will Burger
