Sky finds herself relaxing as she listens to Isaakâs words. Theyâre wise, and comforting, and as her tears subside, she looks more directly at Isaak. Her eyes run still, but only from the pain, and even that has subsided to more tolerable levels thanks to the Khanâs help.
She takes the offered water, sipping it a few times in silence before handing it back, and she starts to rub at the dried flecks of blood on her face. Sheâll definitely have to bathe as soon as she can. The sticky sensation is rather unpleasant, and only serves to remind her of what a disaster this task turned out to be. Her good arm goes to support her as she eases to her feet, hissing only slightly as the strain spreads up to her arm.
âI can help you hold anything else, if you wanted to⊠take himâŠâ Her eyes flick over to the corpse, and her mouth sets in a hard, unhappy line.
âYesâ Isaak nods, looking over the body himself. It wouldnât be right to leave the young man here alone. âCarry my shot gun, darling, and Iâll carry him.â
Itâs deep into the early morning when they return to the canyon. Exhaustion tugs at Isaakâs body with each and every step, but her grip on the body over her shoulder remains firm. Itâs bearable, and itâs going to feel a lot worse breaking the news to the Runnerâs family. Sheâs not about to complain.Â
Fortunately, at the very least, Sky wonât have to wait much longer to be treated. Sitting on a rock at the outskirts of the camps rests one of their medicine women, a bottle of hooch in one hand and a bashing stick in the other.Â
Their medicine woman, who also just so happens to be Isaakâs tipsy mother, Oksana.Â
âMake an old hag worry the night away why dontcha?âÂ
Itâs self-deprication of the light-hearted sort, as few would truly consider Oksana a hag despite her age. Years of athletic activity and medicine work have helped her age well, her body still remaining firm and well-postured, though less muscular. Their relationship can be seen in many ways, from her brown skin to her flowery tattoos to the long gray-streaked dark hair that covers her sagging breasts and reaches down past her waist. The only clothes she has to speak of consist of a pair of slippers and a flowy skirt. Because fuck the heat, and fuck those leather vests. Her ladies hang free.Â
âWere you out shaking fists at the middlemen?â She chuckles wryly as she pulls herself up. But then they come into view, and she can see the signs of their travels more clearly. And then she can see the wrapped body lying across Isaakâs shoulder. Her expression quickly turns worrisome, and she rushes to the two of them with surprising speed. âYouâre hurt Sky. Babe, what happened--â
âI will explain mama, once I... deal with this.â Isaak secures her grip on the Runnerâs body, âPlease help Sky, I could only do so much while we were out.â
The medicine woman nods affirmingly at her childâs request, and grabs hold of Skyâs good arm to lead her into camp. Oksanaâs tent is more spacious than the others. It needs to be, to properly contain all of her supplies.Â
âWas that the one thatâs gone missing?â Oksana releases Sky from her grip as she enters the tent, plopping down on the ground and patting the cot. âGod thatâs some shit. Like we need any more of this... But you come here babe, lay your head down and tell oleâ Oksana whatâs she gonna be patchinâ up. Stabbing? Gun shot? Scorpion sting?âÂ
