Everyone's going back to school but me
So it’s been a couple months since I’ve posted which is just about right. So yesterday I turned 22. Cue the Taylor Swift tune. So obviously now I work for the University, lemme tell ya it’s actually really fun. Great transitioning job and it’s beginning to just be a real gem. So yesterday we went to a secret bar in the back of a hair salon, it was actually really freaking cool. I highly recommend going if you ever find yourself in the downtown area of Columbia, MO. Which let’s face it will be to tailgate during an SEC football game where you will find yourself at Shiloh or Harpo’s game day.
So reality is sitting is as the text keep coming in that everyone is moving back in this weekend from their family homes they went to for the summer... It is going to be extremely weird when all my friends have homework at night and I don’t have my minions to go on random adventures with. Which honestly is probably a good thing for my wallet considering I work right across from Starbucks. Also, I do not envy ANYONE who is going to have to study for a test. lemme take a hard pass on that one.
Work week also starts on Sunday... I’ll be attending mock recruitment which will definitely be the weirdest thing of my life. Oh so many memories in that house, it’s always great to relive the good times. At least this time I don’t have to worry about accidentally touching a PNM, because let’s face it if someone would’ve told on me I would’ve never been able to recruit again. Cue the hand talkers.
To all my fellow Greeks out there, may the odds forever be in your favor and may you not ugly cry on preference day to a legacy (:
oh boy. this week has been a a crazy one. Well, last Friday I got a puppy a sweet sweet puppy. She is 3/4 lab and 1/4 husky. Her name is Lyla (Friday Night Lights) Scarlett (Nashville). Let me tell you though, if you are getting a pup or plan on it, you should highly take into consideration your sleep. Crate training is kind of a nightmare. There are GREAT days where she sleeps for 3 hours at a time, yes those are the great days. Or apparently last night when I left her with my roommates while I was babysitting she woke up at 3:30 am and didn’t go back to sleep. So my poor roommates ): Anyways, I took her to get her shots on Monday and she is healthy and well. She is super playful and loves to sleep during the.
Banning Women from Fraternities at Mizzou
So, as most of you know a group of men called the “ MU Fraternity Alumni Consortium” is proposing some things here at my Alma mater. Once again this is no one in administration within MU this is just the Consortium.
Here’s an article from the Huffington Post if you want more details:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/09/mizzou-frat-proposal-banning-women_n_7544100.html
*Also to note this is completely my own opinion and has nothing to do with my alumni chapters opinion on these issues*
They are the following:
1. "Women students as guests in fraternity houses"- Women would not be allowed in fraternity houses between the hours of 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, as well as every day during syllabus week and stop day each semester.
- Because obviously sexual assaults don’t happen at all times of the day and only on the weekends. This brings me back to the argument of because boys minds go crazy that we then penalize girls to only be able to wear certain things. I think preparing a a class/workshop for each semester would be the best way to portray this knowledge. Not to mention that none of the sexual assaults on campus that have been documented have been said to be in fraternity houses. I do understand these men are trying to protect the fraternity names and keep these young men out of trouble, but come on. This is the second largest sorority recruitment in the United States. I know I’ve heard the question countless times about socials with fraternities during recruitment. Let me casually let my fellow sisters slip in that even though we work countless hours with them during Homecoming and Greek Week we aren’t allowed at their house to celebrate a job well done.
2. "Social and Recruitment Events"- Fraternities would not be allowed to host any out of town formals, and would not be able to use float trips as recruitment events (the float trip thing is already a rule).
- Some of my favorite memories are making those stupid coolers that you spend hours on just to watch them get destroyed the weekend you actually make it to the social. (I refused to make a cooler my whole undergrad life) It also makes me laugh, because once again tradition. Although I have turned down going to these parties because I did not feel comfortable sleeping in the same bed as my date you can surely follow in my footsteps. Did I get jealous of my friends that had so much fun with that fraternity in so said spot? Of course. But I felt more comfortable being at home and using my then fake ID to get into a bar with free drinks. In conclusion, it’s fun to travel, it’s fun to live up your college years in a safe way when you’re comfortable.
3. "Alcohol"- Essentially fraternities would only be allowed to have beer (no hard alcohol).
- This just straight up made me laugh. I don’t think I even liked beer until I was 21. I do at no point suggest that underage drinking is acceptable, but lets be honest when you live in a college town... I can’t tell you how many times I went to a party and got handed a fifth of congress and wanted to vomit the second it touched my lips. So for all you freshman out there I actually support this, you should able to shot gun a beer by your first “legal” tailgate. Thank goodness for big kid jobs and bars without college kids.
4. "Drugs"- Both fraternities and sororities would be required to drug test their members.
- Unless we’re gonna make this any club/organization this is just not okay.
ALL IN ALL
I still support going to the University of Missouri- It was the best four years of my life. So awesome in fact I decided to stick around. Also, I still support going Greek, my sorority was the best thing to ever happen to me and I don’t think our time together would have been any less if these rules were put into place considering those are not anywhere near the reasons I joined a sorority.
Going Alum
This has genuinely been the craziest past few months of my life. In January I started an Internship within Mizzou Athletics. It’s been a crazy amazing ride. I couldn't describe to all all the things I've learned and all the lessons I've been taught. This has been an amazing opportunity. Now that I am about to graduate the number one question I hear in life is “what are you doing after graduation?” That has been the worst question ever asked. With three more weeks until my lease ends I couldn't even tell you what city I will be living in. That is the scariest part. Moving home seems like a little bit of defeat and I can’t believe that we have so many opportunities in this world, but little are able to reach. Anyways, I am not giving up and will have some sort of job lined up in the next couple of weeks. Crazy to think I will be going alum. This past semester I have been involved in Mizzou Association of Venue Managers where we took a trip to Texas and toured many stadiums. I was also on Relay for Life Steering Committee where we raised over $88,000!!! WOOP WOOP. Then in my spare time, when I wasn't sleeping, breathing, and working.... I helped started an organization called Mizzou Cystic Fibrosis Association. Something very dear and near to my heart. I can’t believe my collegiate days are coming to an end. My advice is to always stay out an hour later than you play, always say yes to hanging out with your friends, and NEVER get discouraged when things might not go your way. Take it from a girl who changed her major 9 times.
It’s also Senior week here at SK. My pearl pal has been on point with the gifts. I don’t know who it is, but I have a pretty good guess.... On Monday I go there our ceremony to become alum. It’s been the craziest ride of my life and I have no idea what I would've done without joining SK my sophomore year as a colony class member. I hope to keep up better with this. (LIKE I ALWAYS SAY) But I feel that graduating college is hard emotionally and I would want to help anyone who needs it like people have helped me.

Im coming home to Missouri.... well soon enough(:
So as I spend my last couple weeks in the South, does anyone have any amazing suggestions? This has been an experience of a lifetime and I can't believe it's almost over! You honestly never realize how much you miss home until it's 7 hours away. I just got back from my vacation to Missouri. I got to see my littlest sister do gymnastics for the first time, hang out with my siblings on the fourth of July, and see Toby Keith in STL. I really missed my sister who is in NC though, I have never been home without her being there. She is doing an "intensive" with ABT at North Carolina Performing Arts, which is amazing considering she is 12 and has been there for a month without seeing any of us. The time I spent at Musicians Corner couldn't be described in any amount of words. I met some insanely amazing people. It was honestly like we were our own family. If any of you want any information on Interning there in the Fall or Spring I will give you all the information you need! My boss is amazing and she is super grateful for any help, even if it is just volunteering for one Saturday. Recruitment is also right around the corner, WHICH IS CRAZY! I can't believe that we're almost about to go to school and START MY SENIOR YEAR?!?! I mean whatttt????? Anyways, I hope everyone is enjoying the rest of their summer!
Congratulations to Nina Davuluri on being crowned Miss America 2014 and making Sigma Kappa proud! :D
Sweet Summer Time in the South
So I obviously haven't wrote in WAY too long. Sorry about that, it was such a busy semester. Well in the meantime I finished strong and had an amazing spring break in Gulf Shores with my sisters. Do you ever just meet someone for like the third time and you really get to know them and you are like woah you're my sister and I'm kinda in love with you? Well, I would have to say that it happened a lot over spring break. We had a house full of 26 SKs and it was a lot of fun! Plus there were two other houses full of us and it was an experience I will never forget!
We also had our Ultra Violet where it was a HUGE success and we are now preparing for our Alzheimer's Walk in the spring. Our Philanthropy chair really rocked it this year and is staying on top of her stuff which is always awesome. We also had a great first semester with all of our new officers and spring biddies! They are such a delight, our VPNME chair really took things off in the right way and we had so many successful new member meetings.
Also, in the meantime I have scored an internship in Nashville, TN. I am the Artist Hospitality Intern at Musicians Corner. So for any of you that are here in Nashville come out on Saturdays and see it! Also, if you are a SK in Nashville I would seriously love love love to meet you! I have been here a week and I was wearing my SK shorts and a lady was like hey I was a Sigma Kappa! I love how welcoming people are in the south. It's completely different than Missouri. Here people are always greeting you, smiling and non judgmental. I hope to keep you guys updated on my journey better than before. I always say that but I think I will have more time this summer.
It has been a really hard time the past week leaving my family and friends behind. I think it's one of those things where I will just have to fall into a routine and realize that I am a very social person and I will deff be okay! I know that I am so blessed and lucky to have such a supporting family and friends to push me to reach my goals. It's been so much fun living in a big city so far and getting lost and using the crap out of my GPS. (the only thing i know how to do is get home lol)
Well, I hope to keep you updated and I hope you all have a great summer! Seriously let me know what you are up to this summer even if it's just laying by the pool getting your tan on (:
LITD,
Tricia
I went to the beautiful mountains of Keystone over winter break! It was mostly Mizzou Greek life, which meant it was so much fun! I can't believe how many people I got close to and it was such a blast. This Sunday we are about to try a whole new way to choose Greek Week pairings. Apparently there are four buckets with ping pong balls in them PHA, IFC big house, IFC little house and then the other type of non-greek fraternities. It's going to be interesting, the fact that it's the first time it's going to happen just means that there are going to be way too many people complaining! I just hope we get a good pairing!(: LITD.
What Sigma Kappa means to me
Every time I write, I try to write about something meaningful about Sigma Kappa. I know my posts may come in short, but they mean a lot to me. Lately I've been thinking about how I fit into Sigma Kappa and how it's my family. Then I thought about how I completely don't fit into Sigma Kappa. Sigma Kappa fits into me. I don't have to try to be an SK, I am a SK because of what is in my heart. I have met the most amazing women I have ever met. I've met my best friends, my go to's and the girls who I can randomly sit at lunch with in the house and have a random conversation with. I always know that they have my back. What makes my experience different you ask? The fact that I'm in a colony class, watching my chapter grow from nothing to a completely amazing chapter has me literally crying right now. I've watch Nori become our president and I remember meeting her at a Football game before I even knew she was our president. I met Erin because she was in my committee the first semester we were in Sigma Kappa and I couldn't imagine life without her. Olivia became my friend first semester as well, she is the first person to ever stand up to me and not baby me and always tells me exactly what I don't want to hear but need to, sometimes we butt heads but she's taught me a lot about myself and I wouldn't be the same without her. I met Courtney randomly just to hang out and go to Scotty McCreery together and now I would walk through fire for her. Now I really can't think of how I fit into Sigma Kappa, I take our values with me every day. I schedule myself around SK, it follows me in every day life. I wear my letters constantly and I "throw what I know" whenever is possible. So going Greek didn't mean just throwing on a title to me, it meant being someone, being myself and I wouldn't have it any other way. I've learned my friendships aren't for four years, but my sisterhood is for eternity.
Recruitment is over!
Work week was probably one of the most amazing and stressful weeks of my life. Since it was our first one and Nationals was here to help it was amazing how many girls worked hard to make sure that our recruitment was amazing. I can't describe how grateful I am for our selection committee to wake up every morning and help us be paired with girls who we will have the best conversations with. I couldn't be more grateful for Courtney from Nationals or our leadership consultants Hannah, Suz and Molly! Molly is our new LC who will live in house with us and is from Missouri State. She has been super nice and has had tons of great advice for us. I will never forget the conversations I had during the first round of recruitment until the ladies cried on Preference Day saying that they wanted Sigma Kappa as their own. I don't think anything has made me more happier. When you feel super privileged to be in a sorority that so many girls want to be in, that is the best feeling in the world. Recruitment was a blast, the cute clothes, opening our doors trying to be the loudest in door chants and Bid day, where we had the best 85 girls come into our traditions, love and sisterhood. I couldn't be more excited to meet and get to know every single one. I met my bid day buddy that day, I couldn't describe the instant feeling of wanting to know her and knowing that she's my sister and helping her "throw what she knows." I couldn't possibly want a different girl in my life. I can't believe we did it, we worked our tail ends off and we had so many girls come through. I can't wait to let everyone know how we're doing, LITD.
Recruitment
Today was day one of recruitment, I couldn't be more excited to recruit my future little! Since it's our first recruitment, we have some lovely ladies from Nationals helping us. Today we worked a lot on preference day and I am super excited to be able to talk in front of the girls! It's a short post, but I'm exhausted!
