š°š» šØš³š³ šŗš»šØš¹š»šŗĀ summer 1958, when a doe-eyed girl in a summer dress meets a boy two years her senior at a rock show. freshly graduated at the top of her class and a month away from going to her dream school, surely she's too smart to fall for a guy in a band --ā no matter how many love songs he throws her way. they meet up after the show, she takes him to the best places in town and he tells her stories about his life on the road. they laugh harder than they have in years. he tells her sheās pretty and she thinks heās being ridiculous. when they kiss, it feels like magic, the kind people spend their entire lives trying to put into songs. when he asks her to run away, she says yes.
šŗš°šæ š“š¶šµš»šÆšŗĀ into the honeymoon phase, sheās staring at a pregnancy test in the bathroom of a dennyās. she cries in front of the broken mirror because, although sheād always dreamed of being a mother, this was the wrong time with the wrong guy. come february 1959 sheās holding an šØšµš®š¬š³ in her arms. the baby is welcomed into a world of rock nā roll, his father is too busy chasing a dream to properly care for his family, he tells her to be patient because ā everything will be worth it once he gets his big break. ā they bounce between cheap motel rooms and an old volkswagen van, every night he comes home drunk or high or mixture of both. it shouldnāt have been a surprise when she packed up her bag and left him with a baby and a note.Ā
š»šÆš¬ šŗšÆš¶š¾ š“š¼šŗš» š®š¶ š¶šµ ! the musician continues to chase his dream, often pawning his son off to a roadie or the teenage girl working the merch table. the kid grows up in bars and small venues, he learns how to strum a guitar before he can read, ā thereās nothing any school can teach you that you canāt learn on the road, kid. ā when he turns seven he asks if he has a mom, his father ignores it, waves him off and finishes whatās left of his beer. when angel asks again the lie comes naturally, ā sheās dead. complications during childbirth, you know ? ā it stings but he doesnāt understand why, is it possible to miss something you never had ? at eleven he starts earning his keep, he helps the band set up for shows and tunes their strings for a few extra bucks. the money he earns is spent on books, ones he reads on the side stage as his father plays until his fingers start to bleed. the band does well enough to gather a following but not well enough to pay the bills. the promises never stop coming, ā move to los angeles and youāll get signed ! ā said one producer, ā go to seattle and weāll submit your demo, ā said the manager. his life turns into a string of āalmostā,Ā the life heād been taught to want always at his fingertips but never within reach.Ā
š¾šÆš¬š¹š¬ š»šÆš¬ šÆš¬š³š³ š°šŗ š¹šØš«šŖš³š°šš ? that small town in indiana turns out to be his motherās hometown. with less than 40 dollars and a whole lot of luck, he knocks on the door and is greeted by a pair of brown eyes that mirror his own. he learns that she worked as a teacher but has been on leave since her diagnosis ten months ago. metastatic melanoma. at first, the words sound like gibberish, but as her smile falters and she begins to explain, angelās world falls apart again. their time together is limited but if thereās one thing the boy knows how to do, it's adapt. he takes a job at the local record shop. after lifetime of running with the wind, he finally has a reason to stay put.Ā
* one of the kindest souls you'll ever meet. you probably wouldn't guess that by looking at him with a cigarette always tucked behind his ear while he looks up at the world from behind a book. he's reserved by nature but it doesn't take much to make a friend out of him.
* he has a weird relationship with music, in many ways rock n' roll was his first love, there's a notebook under his pillow filled with songs and melodies inspired by his life on the road. on the other hand, music was the thing that ruined his life. it's the reason he never got a proper education, why he had to grow up at a young age, and the thing that was eating his father alive. working at a record store is not his brightest move but he doesn't know how to do anything else.
* the kind of friend you want in a crisis, he thinks facts and acts faster. loyal but never to a fault, it's something that has to be earned but once you do it you have a ride or die for life.
* falls in love quickly but never for long, relationships in his world were always a temporary thing which was good because it meant he never got hurt.
* after being lied to pretty much his entire life, angel has developed what most phycologist would call trust issues. it creates a lot of internal conflict because he's trusting by nature and always wants to see the best in people
