Hello, dear comrade/occasional visitor!

Some time ago I watched the HBO Chernobyl series and since then, this topic has become a subject of my greatest interest and passion.

Here, on tumblr, I met amazing people, with whom I have a great pleasure to discuss not only the series, but also the real events and consequences of the Chernobyl accident, as well as the personality of Valery Alekseevich Legasov.

Since most of the books on the subject of Chernobyl were written in Russian, I took the liberty of translating some of the most important and interesting (in my opinion) excerpts from these books.

Below I provide links to all my translations, I hope you find them just as interesting and worthy of attention as I do.

Professor Legasov’s favorite pet

In December 1978, a high-bred chow-chow puppy was purchased, as it’s originally intended as a New Year's gift for me.

This charming creature turned out to have a very long name, ending like this: Liu-Thomas von Langengrund.

It was only Valery Alekseevich who was recognized by the dog as an absolute master and became an object of universal adoration in our family for many years. The dog was very fond of collective walks, jogging on skis, although in this case he could hardly keep up with running along the track. He was very fond of travelling by car in any weather, even in the heat, he stoically endured stuffiness and travel inconveniences, he was happy with the realization of his involvement in the "common cause."

For the birthday of the chow-chow Liu Thomas (he is 1 year old!) Valery Alekseevich has prepared a "message".

There lives our Joy in terem

Happy birthday, Valery Alekseevich Legasov

On this day, I’d like to share some of his quotes, that I like most and that are still relevant today.

With sufficient perseverance, today we can fully appreciate the contribution of this amazing man to science.

And we must try not to forget about it every day.

I really want to thank him for everything he did.

And yes, the quotes will be in Russian :)

Возраст зрелости наступает тогда, когда к человеку приходит ясное осознание личной ответственности за судьбу не только его собственную и не только за судьбу его близких, но и за судьбу всей страны, всего народа.

Бюрократия смертельна для науки. Науке всегда была противопоказана и избыточная иерархичность. Она душит ее. Наука, как и искусство, не терпит промежуточных звеньев.

Каждый ученый-естественник должен очень хорошо воспитываться гуманитарно. Всегда на плечах наших великих гуманитариев стояли великие «Технари». Так должно быть. Но в современной науке этот баланс нарушен.

Раз родился человек, которого свет еще не знал, он должен обязательно оставить после себя то, чего до него не было, - пусть это запятая, точечка, но свое!

Необходимо избавиться от ощущения духовной пустоты, которая, как мне видится, характерна для нынешнего общества. Быть может, как никогда, нам сегодня так важно обрести надежду, общие цели, общие идеалы, вернуть самоуважение и гордость.

Надо раз и навсегда осознать: бороться необходимо за создание защитных технологий, адекватных той мощности, которая дана в руки человека. Это проблема общая для всего мира.

Наука - дело коллективное. Профессиональная среда подпитывает наиболее способных людей. Они не рождаются в изоляции. Наука не терпит одиночества.

Решения нетривиальные, небанальные рождаются - и то нечасто - в умах крупных, высокоинтеллектуальных личностей... Если таких людей крайне мало или их голос не слышен, это может закончиться для страны катастрофой.

Коллективизм - одна из наших национальных особенностей... В наших условиях «жить миром» - единственный способ выжить вообще. Так что, давая шанс каждой личности, поощряя талант, смелость, инициативу, необходимо разумно сохранять и возможности коллективизма. Не стремиться безоглядно копировать тот же евро-американский индивидуализм.
