It is so easy to hate on YA but I think that genre is IMPORTANT and can make a great impact if done right (which is rare and hard). Making something interesting enough to hook the short attention span of a teenager + putting in takes that makes readers question their own world and the system that they live in + using teenager-friendly language IS a challenge???

That’s why I love Suzanne Collins y’all! She could’ve written a commentary on our political system, but nope! She makes it ACCESSIBLE and ENTERTAINING not just for us to get hooked, but to give commentary on how we act and consume media

(+ why I hate almost every other YA dystopia novel! I want to question while I cry over my favorite characters!)

Whenever someone brings up the Project Hail Mary movie I always get a teeny bit excited to tell them I read the book years ago during the pandemic so I can feel good about myself (wow I “discovered” a gem ehm ehm literally such a popular book from a NYT bestselling author ehm ehm).

The commercialization and consumption of the hunger games in mainstream media is so ironic cause I guess we really missed the plot guys!

Though fiction often imbeds themes that calls out/criticize real-life structures in society, i fear that most people can’t or don’t want to make the connection to real issues. Maybe it’s the label “fiction” itself? I fear that fiction can dissociate people instead of sparking a fire for action/awareness. But at the same time, fiction novels generates a lot of buzz and touches people in ways other medias can only graze.

A good rule of thumb whenever a non-fiction author has "Dr." or "Phd" next to their name on the cover is to check if:

Their doctorate is real and from an accredited institution

Their doctorate is relevant to the subject matter of the book

Example 1:

Kent Hovind is not a doctor. He's a creationist conman. His "doctorate" comes from the unaccredited Christian diploma mill "Patriot University". The "propaganda in science textbooks" he's talking about is the theory of evolution.

Example 2:

Vivian King's Phd is in engineering science. She has no formal education in psychology, psychiatry, sociology, or any other field relevant to the subject matter of the book.

An author doesn't have to be an academic to have valuable insight and information to share. But if they are presenting themselves as an academic to seem more legit, but their credentials are fake or misleading, it's a big red flag.

We know Suzanne loves to create metaphors in her characters to simplify concepts for YA readers. One of them is her deliberate choice to not give much “screen time” for Prim’s character. We see Prim’s kind and innocent actions but they are all of the mundane. We mostly live of Katniss’ biased narrative of Prim which solidifies Prim’s character as a metaphor for goodness, kindness, and innocence. This dissonance helps the metaphor!
