April 6 - April 16: Momma and Daddy cross the pond
March 31 – April 5: Positano
What a place. Positano is on the Amalfi coast and it’s the place were you see the pictures of the cute little houses built into the side of a mountain overlooking the ocean. We spent the days in Positano relaxing on the beach. We laughed about how Positano was our vacation.. from our trip.. from our study abroad experience... because things are so stressful? hahah anyway, the first day we arrived in Salerno and had to take a boat along the coast to Positano, which was absolutely breathtaking. The weather, the views, it is truly just heaven on Earth. Well, right now I am sitting outside on a little patio ish area at 10 in the morning on our second day, alone just relaxing and writing and the view is just incredible. I’m going to be a loser and take pictures on my laptop right now of my view…
The first day we went to the beach with a bottle of rum and juice to mix drinks. That was extremely entertaining. So we tanned and swam (In MARCH/APRIL) in the ocean (!)
Really we didn’t do much in Positano. During the day we would relax on the beach, in the evening we would go to the same restaurant usually and then relax inside. One night we decided to try and go out... even though it turned out that the place was closed even though many people requested it to us. One night we drank inside and relaxed and hung out. The one night we drank on the beach and that night me and Marissa slept outside on the (stone) patio, because, well why not? We ended up getting in trouble for our noise levels, which baffles me. The first night we woke up to a note typed out on our door, were hollered at in the stairwell the next, then someone came and banged on our door which freaked us out. Then eventually, our landlord lady was contacted... sorry we’re from America, and predominantly the East Coast. Anyway, an amazing adventure and that is a place that I will definitely be returning to!
When living ones dream, one can only wish for things to stay the same.
Roma, Italia
April 29-31: Rome
Rome was a lot of fun. It was our shortest stay, but there is only so much to see. We got in by the bus and right now in Italy it is hot out. Like t-shirt and no jacket weather… maybe it just feels hotter cause we are coming from England, but I’m not complaining. Anyway, lugging our bags through the street and trying to find our place was quite the adventure. I remember the most about Rome from my last visit. After we were situated, we went to walk around and eat something. We were staying right near Vatican City and it really felt like I was there yesterday. We walked through the Vatican, which is just so big and amazing and beautiful and we saw the Pieta inside too. Took some pictures and headed out to find some food.
It’s a shame that everyone I was with isn’t as excited about it as I was, but they can still appreciate it. We ate and just relaxed a afterwards cause the next morning we woke up early and had to go on the complete other side for all the other sights to see. The next morning when we left we walked though Vatican City and guess what?! There was the big guy, Pope Francis giving a mass in St. Peter’s square!! That’s the second time I have been in Italy now, for Easter, and seen a Pope. I thought that was super cool. (He’s in the below picture... just very tiny. )
Then we walked down the river and we got to see a castle (That I’ve been inside before), some squares, the coliseum (also been in), some arcs, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps. We really saw everything. It is completely different traveling with a group of friends, rather than a family trip. We appreciate a lot of things and will sit outside and stare, like we did at the coliseum to just take it in, rather than paying and going inside, plus I’ve already done that. We sat inside this gated area of grass to just relax a little and look at the enormous and ancient structure that is the coliseum.
Unfortunately, I was wearing a skirt and while trying to get over the fence, I tried to remain a lady, which meant that my feet were together and rather than one getting caught on the fence, both did. And ker-plunk, there I was on the street of Rome, with a decent scratch on my leg and covered in dust with four laughing and worried friends… and not a single person stopped to help this girl up off the ground… Rude. Can’t let that ruin my time though! At the Trevi Fountain we took a bunch of pictures and took videos and made some wishes, which were lots of fun. Being in Rome and seeing the remains of ancient Rome is just so cool and being surrounded such ancient things and imagining life at that time is just so interesting, so I don’t mind just sitting and taking a moment to take it all in. That night we relaxed and watch the Da Vinci Code… kinda fitting and the next morning we were on our way! Short stay, but that’s all we really needed.
The world is a book, and those who never travel only read one page.
Florence, Italy
March 26-29: Florence,Italy
Ahh Florence… my favourite city in the world. We arrived via bus around 2 and then finding our airbnb was a little difficult, but we figured it out. Carrying our bags through the streets was a little frustrating, especially after carrying our suitcases over tons of bridges in Venice earlier, but we managed. An airbnb is basically a house or room that is rented out to travellers. It was this art studio and when you entered it was all this art stuff and desks and stuff and then a kitchen and then in the back was our room and bathroom. It was a super cool and fun layout. There was a bigger bed and a small bed on the ground floor, then there was a little ladder like stairway that led to a loft with another big bed, but the best part was the hammock that dangled over the stairs. Just so relaxing. Anyway, I just love Florence. The old schoolish and authentic feeling you have when you’re there is just so nice. We would go out to eat and get wine and pizza or gnocchi or pasta… honestly the life. I think I have gotten a glass of good wine with every sit down meal I have had in Italy, again – the life. Just like Venice, we did a lot of walking around and just enjoying. The first night, we went out and enjoyed the night life of Florence – see? A different experience than last time. ---- Get this. The club we were trying to get into was pretty crowded and the bouncer wasn’t going to let us in… BUT I was able to convince him to let us in using my Spanish skills to let us in, close enough to Italian. We even got on stage and sang karaoke… we’re wild, but it was super fun.---- On the walk back, me and Marissa found this little tower with illuminated astrological signs on the ground… sound familiar Momma and Dad? Well it should because we took pictures there last time we were in Italy, so of course I had to this time as well.
We celebrated Easter in Florence, but we couldn’t make it to church, which I was really sad about. But we walked around a bunch and checked out Il Duomo, which is a massive and beautiful church, which is a huge symbol for Florence. It’s just so big and it’s all green and white and super detailed and beautiful, we would just stare at it and would try to focus on one little part, like a statue and focus on the detail and it’s really crazy to think about it that way. Then we walked up to this overlook, which I appreciated cause it was a little workout. The city from the overlook is just so beautiful. The colors, the architecture, and way the streets are set up, and the random tall cathedrals and buildings sticking up above the other buildings makes it even more beautiful.
We lay on the grass and got ice cream at the overlook and just enjoyed being in Italy and the scenery and the warm weather. I don’t think we went up to this overlook when I was there with the family, which was pretty surprising to me. Though while walking along the main river, I am pretty sure that I walked past where we stayed last time. I feel like I explored a completely different part of Florence than last time. We walked around more of the city rather than the back streets, but we got to the little squares in Florence again. I just love Florence and Italy so much. This trip really made that obvious to me. Travelling to Italy made me realize I could never live in England, weather wise. I would grow so depressed there, which is a shame because it really is such a nice place. We were two bridges down from the Ponte Vecchio, the big bridge with the tons of jewelry stores on it. I picked out some rings and necklaces if anyone needs gift ideas for me hehe.
Anyway, the last day in Florence, we travelled out to Pisa. I have been before, but we entered a completely different way. I didn’t know that there was an actual city really outside where the leaning tower is because last time we got dropped off right outside and then we walked through some small markets and that’s what I thought it was. Maybe it changed, but it’s a really cute city. Filled with designer store and painted a pale yellow with green open shutters. We went and watched a mini concert and danced a bit there which was funny. In the abbey area we got some really fun pictures of us with the leaning tower. I think it might be tilted maybe 3 more inches than last time I was there. We weren’t allowed in the chapel because you needed tickets, but it was still pretty from the outside. It was a fun little day trip.
Our Italy trip has consisted mostly of random sight seeing, eating, and wine – but no complaints from me. There was this orange colored drink that we noticed in both Venice and Florence that seriously everyone drank, it’s called Aperol Spritz and it is made up of prosecco, aperol (whatever that is, but boy is it bitter), and some spritz filled with some fruit. We were all so excited to try it and we got it in Pisa… well it was pretty rough. Very bitter and the after taste left my tongue feeling strange and bad tasting. We ended up putting sugar in it to try and help with the taste because they cost us 6 euros each so we weren’t going to waste them! I’m happy I tried it because it is apparently a popular Italian drink, but I think I’ll just stick with wine.
One of my favourite parts is surprisingly when we are on the buses and I just stare out the window at the countryside. Mountains aren’t usually the first thing you think of when you think of Italy, but it’s filled with them and there are a bunch of little villas on the mountain sides and it’s so pretty. Off to Roma!
~ Where wine reigns... silence does not ~
I nearly drank wine every day in Italy, such a good life.
Venice, Italy.
March 23-26: Venice
After we landed at the airport, we had to take a water taxi to get to our hostel. The room was really cute. It was actually across the street from the rest of the rooms and it was its own building, which was weird, but a little cute. It made it really feel like we were in Italy. We had two full days in Venice and for the most part we just walked around a lot, like 10 miles a day.
We went to the main cathedral on the island and took tons of nice pictures. I forgot how much I love Italy, I mean I don’t regret picking England as my study abroad destination, but the feeling of Italy is just amazing. It was so nice to feel the warmth of the sun here. The one day we got pizzas at a dock restaurant on the water and got wine and it was just so peaceful and relaxing and just such a great feeling.
I loved being here with my family some years ago and right now it is such a different experience being with a group of girl friends and being older. Both were equally as nice, just different. We don’t really have money so we basically just enjoy what we can, but it’s a great experience nonetheless. It was weird not having a phone to take pictures and such, but it was actually pretty nice. Morgan took some pictures for me and it was nice just taking in what I was seeing rather than worrying about getting 57 pictures of canals in Venice.
The one day we went on a gondola ride – obviously you have to if you’re in Venice. Our Gondolier, Nicholas was so nice and he even let each of us steer the gondola in the Grand Canal. Like I actually crawled up to where he stood and rowed away and we sang, “When the moon hits you eye, like a big pizza pie!”
Honestly, one of the coolest experiences of my life. I’m basically a licensed gondolier now. He gave us all the details about life in Venice and how the gondoliers shout “Oi!” when coming around corners to warn oncoming boats, so naturally we all shouted “Oi!” together. Again, laying in the front of the gondola was so nice with the sun. We got very very lucky with the weather.
