MY POLYJUICE POTION HAS GONE TERRIBLY WRONG
When a famous musician dies, people get all nostalgic. "Oh, I was such a huge fan!" "I knew about them 'when'!" "They died too young! What a waste of talent." etc, etc, etc.
Now, I can't claim to have known about Dave Brubeck before anyone; he was making records when my parents were my current age. But I do have very distinct memories of listening to his music growing up.
I would never describe my dad as a "music lover". Sure, he likes music, but he has a very varied, random and ecclectic taste that oftentimes, would lend to a disdain for most popular music. Growing up, if my dad put music on, it was one of a few things: Gregorian chants, marching music, Broadway musical soundtracks and Elton John were in the mix. My dad doesn't really care for much jazz, my mom hates it, but somehow, Dave made the cut in our house.
I remember lying on the living room's cream carpet, playing cards with my dad and brother, Brubeck on in the background. I remember thinking, "I don't really know what this is. It's not on the radio so it can't be cool, but I like this. Is this jazz? Don't cool people like jazz?" A sort of glimpse into my father and also into the world of music that was bigger than 7 year old me and Amy Grant.
I'm not claiming to be a huge fan. I'm not claiming to own unique experiences involving this jazz great. But I do pause and remember the first time I can remember being affected by a new musical sound. Being struck by something different. Knowing that something is great and still appreciating it 20 years later.
**Also, now that I've finished this I can't deny the influence of reflection on music and childhood and discovery I've gained from my boyfriend's look back at The Beach Boys. He's a sharp one. And, if you're lucky, he'll post a playlist or two. Check him out.
