What is left: A zine about grief

What is left is a zine reflecting about grief and complicated feelings. Building on their personal histories of grief, Billy use this platform to construct a much needed memorial for their aunt who passed away recently. What is left explores the merging of grief with gender, trauma, poverty and misogyny/femmephobia.

Cw: Death, suicide, domestic violence, addiction, triggering family stuff. Text heavy & illustrated by billy/Starchild Stela Black and white, 5.5 inch x 11 inch, 32 pages.

This seems heartless, but oh man.

There are so many things my Mom cooked that I never learned how to make and I will spend the rest of my life thinking about how much I miss them.

The greatest treasures I inherited from my mom were her recipes and cookbooks, most of which had notes about the various holidays and birthdays she made them for (with the year, dating from the early 1980s up until the year of her death in 2012), and how each recipe was received/how well people liked it. Sometimes, if a kid helped make it, she made a note of it - this persisted from my own childhood well into my stepsister’s daughter’s childhood. I’m very thankful that she kept such detailed accounts of the food she made!

Sorry this is a heavy post/comic but I had to get it out of me

My friend Emily died very suddenly this week. I met her in 6th grade. We stayed at the same neighbor’s house after school and rode the same bus. We fell into the same circle of friends in high school and were in touch off and on through college and afterward. She was one of the most upbeat, kind, and thoughtful people I’ve ever known. She was 26 years old.

Some things came back clearer than others while drawing this. Memory often fails you when you need it the most.

This is my tribute to Tokyo J. Prince; my first cat, who set me on the path to becoming the crazy cat lady I am today.  Rest In Purring, little buddy.
