great. this was just perfect. exactly what was desired actually.

a begrudged sigh escaped the small boy's frame, eyes adjusting to the dark space. cautious hands extended outward, searching for the limits of this confined area. it wasn't very big. were he of taller stature, this would feel like a tomb.

this was his fault really. a stretching of abilities that were clearly out of reach. perhaps this served as a facsimile to training a muscle. perhaps next time would be more...successful. one could only hope. that would be a thought held for later. the current issue of confinement needed to be addressed.

finding what seemed to be the thinnest part of this unknown structure, he began to knock. were this a foreseeable outcome, this trip would have been taken during the day. his only hope was that this was a well travelled part of the city. if not, then he might be here a while.

Wine drunk was a state of mind at this point, or an suspension of disbelief. The alcohol never settled like it used to, there was not the soft comfortable haze and lightness anymore. No buzzing under her skin, just the memory of it, really. She couldn't get the processes of her body right to recreate it yet. Maybe she would fiddle with the kidneys, the liver and all later but for now she would survive.

Lola's still had the best paella in town, not that there were many spots that tried to rival it, and she ate and drank with equal indulgence and equal disappointment in the end that it didn't quite satisfy. At first, she walked without purpose, but her mind narrowed to something new. Like a finding a mole that wasn't there before she could feel the spot and it tugged at her curiosity, feet moving until the distance compressed and closed in on itself like there was no space between the the shady corner and the open expanse of St. Louis No. 3. It was less well known than the first of its name, but better kept in her opinion. Not nearly as much foot traffic, and the graves still gleamed white in many spots or the shiny grey of new stone. She stood behind the wrought iron gate and listened until the knock grew louder and the spot got bigger and bigger and then she was there. An older grave, a little worn at the top where water had gathered. "Are you stuck in there?" She asked, her voice didn't come out her mouth but sounded out inside the small vault like someone had stuck a speaker in it. "How'd you manage that?"

a few more desperate pounds were followed by a defeated sigh. it seemed that where he was was not in a populated area. with all hope seemingly lost, the boy leans against one of the dusty walls, loathing how much time would now be spent in this confined space. at least, that's what was being begrudgingly accepted. something would quickly rouse his thoughts from this train of pessimistic thought. however, what had brought hope also brought an air of confusion.

though vision was all but existent, purple laced blue eyes darted about searching for a source. there was a certainty to the notion that he was completely alone in this box. however, the voice clearly resonated from within it. being so far from home, it was hard to detect if something not of humanity were near. even if he could smell it, the smell of death would have more than likely concealed it. nevertheless, sam wanted out. if the source of the voice wished to help, he felt compelled to accept.

" uh, yes, i'm stuck. some mean bigger kids locked me in here. they said they'd let me out, but they just left me. " an attempt was made to sprinkle his words with a tone of dismay. just a touch of fear and helplessness that may move one to more earnest movement. the faster he could get out of this irksome confinement, the better.

okay, so since i've written it twice, i'll just make it a headcanon at this point. the way that sam detects other supernatural beings is through his sense of smell. the smells differ depending on which pantheon or mythology the entity is from. like a lot of his other abilities, this sense is at its strongest in his home town. when far away from mawthorne, he can still smell it, but it almost blends in with the normal scents around him.

diligent eyes scan immediate surroundings, blueish hues mimicking the precise motion of a security camera. every detail was known, and yet, treated as if they were freshly seen. this was a near daily ritual for the young boy. patrolling the streets of the town he called home. adults going about their day greeted sam with warm smiles and welcoming waves. he would often respond in kind, though eyes never wandered from their duty. this facet was understood by most and not seen as rude. most knew how seriously this self-assigned duty was taken. most knew hot to get in his way.

as confident steps take the small boy around a corner, something halts them just as quickly. a smell lingering on the air. wafted towards him by a gentle breeze that rustled the hairs hanging above his eyes. it was familiar, though different. like a relative to a smell he had known all too well. the pause in the boy's step quickly warped into a hurried walk. the patrol could wait. something was here. something he was quite keen on meeting.

upon spotting the source, he did not approach. did not put on the typical charade of overt friendliness. instead, unblinking eyes watched them from afar, trying to get a feel for who and what they were. and what brought them to his little town.

i've been contemplating making a carrd specifically to detail Mawthorne, the fictional town this blog is primarily set in. i don't want to flood the blog with headcanons about it cuz that would be...a lot. idk yet. think i'll ponder on the idea for a bit.

i've been listening through welcome to nightvale again to get inspiration. there's something so specific about the way they write the horrors of the show that i really want to emulate and bring to my blog. i want mawthorne, the town sam is from, to feel like akin to nightvale.

The Mawthorne Public Library is the pinnacle of small town charm. This local landmark boasts an impressive array of books and genres to satiate the wants and desires of any and all readers. Just watch out for those nasty late fees. Giving up years of your life seems a bit steep for an overdue book, but the check out limit is pretty lenient. Oh, and be careful in the autobiography section. People seem to just…disappear there.
