If i were to come back to writing grimmsnarl regularly i'd definitely want to revamp some stuff cus i feel like i prefer the way i write characters more for myself now.... and part of that is by having themes i wanna hit.
and with grimmsnarl, one of the themes or general ideas is "magic is only magic until its explained"
like how humans once had real actual fairies in the world with them, but now that they've become obsessed with the idea of pokemon and their powers as tools, they've classified them all into little boxes.... and fairies arent so interesting anymore.
^ yet another nefarious villain i write who is always lurking around (people just don't consider him a threat anymore cus they slapped the words "fairy-type" on him and now he's a pokemon i guess)
to me grimmsnarl and hatterene are so awesome as like.... visual storytelling. and yall know that i am all for mentions and allusiona of colonisation in the pokemon world because... if youre gonna make a game based on the "current world", you're better off acknowledging shit rather than just pretending "oh nothing bad ever happened and native people dont exist"
anyway. i love that hatterene and grimmsnarl's power comes from their hair. and they have three stage evolutions, because to me that really is like a representation of like....
them being actual creatures that lived alongside humans, of a similar status to humans. and resemble humans in a way by going through those "life stages". even though pokemon evolutions are separate from their ages, the comparison is gonna be made.
and the power coming from their hair is like, much with MANY indigenous groups not just in europe but everywhere, people associate hair with growth, experience, power and status.
okay rest under cut cus TLDR i just yap so much about exploring symbolism in the face of implied colonisation, and the connection that native wildlife and humans have with each other
in the case of grimmsnarl (and hatterene) i really like to explore the symbolic idea of a demon (fairy) native to a land having to adapt alongside the native people to something changing.
like, the people in ancient ireland wouldnt have wanted the wolves on their farms, but the wolves in ireland going extinct after colonist occupation was a loss of identity.
the ancient people in galar mightve done up all sorts of tricks to keep fairies at bay but now ... (like in unova, or sinnoh...) those fairies are being captured in pokeballs and made to do the bidding of the "new people"
i think i wrote something once where, despite being "unseelie" fairies, a grimmsnarl and its tribe helped protect an ancient tribe's land because it was near their land. and the invading people captured both that tribes king and the grimmsnarl, and cut off both their hair.
and theres another part to that. colonisers do what they do because they dont see the people theyre trying to destroy as human. so in that case, the fairies and the humans and any other native wildlife are taking this burden on together because they all rely on each other in their ecosystem...
was thinking abt elderly pokemon so old grimmsnarl
looks more like an old hag
their hair grows lighter and finer as they age until eventually they cant use it as a weapon, so they rely more on their special attack later in life. same goes for elderly impidimp and morgrem, though elderly impidimp seem to enjoy being nuisances right to the bitter end
grimmsnarl cant develop muscle or fat (neither can the rest of the line) and this is why, contrary to what old historians believed of unseelie fairies, the grimmsnarl line is extremely sluggish in cold months.
when they are grimmsnarl, they rely heavily on their hair to act as muscles, making movement easier.
i MUST make new giant evil bitches. and also go through and make grimmsnarl less important in my blogs canon... i know it doesnt really matter since im not here much anymore, but i Like him being a normal grimmsnarl. and "normal" grimmsnarls being 500 year old fairy patriarchs that exist in the glimwood beefing over turf with the hatterene line
